what the fu_k is this concert??? never ear anything about! It was a part of Aarhus Festival. For the past 2 or 3 years they've had these "Medium Rare Sessions". The backing band, The Desoto Caucus along with Howe Gelb, performs with several different singers over 2 concerts (+ the unofficial openening at the City Hall). The Desoto Caucus are really a brilliant bunch of musicians. I've never seen Lanegan live before, but they played up to his voice beautifully. And some of them play on "Hawk" as well. (Isobel Campbell performed with them in 2009) And according to gaffa.dk they are the rythm section of Giant Sand as well. Hmmm... Need to check that out By the way, the concert was filmed, but I don't think they'll release it on DVD or anything. More likely, they'll show it just once in a cinema in Aarhus at next years Aarhus Festival.

Need to check that out By the way, the concert was filmed, but I don't think they'll release it on DVD or anything. More likely, they'll show it just once in a cinema in Aarhus at next years Aarhus Festival. The Beauty, The Man of Darkness, and the Aarhus rockers made it all come together.Among the highlights of last year’s Aarhus Festival was the Aarhus group The Desoto Caucus’ concerts – headlined as “The Medium Rare Sessions” – with different soloists like Josh Rouse, Isobel Campbell, and last but not least C.V. Jørgensen. This year The Desoto Caucus repeats the success with two concerts. The first took place Tuesday night with Danish Agnes Obel and American Mark Lanegan in an almost sold out Voxhall. Before the two soloists, we were treated to a couple of live songs by American Howe Gelb, who usually plays with the The Desoto Caucus musicians in Giant Sand. So the parties knew each other very well, thus giving the audience some well played desert rock with Gelb’s dry vocal and equally dry comments between the songs. Agnes Obel **** Then Agnes Obel placed herself behind the grand piano, and started out with an evocative instrumental composition, in which guest trumpet player Jacob Buchanan excelled, playing the trumpet beautifully. Next song was “Philharmonics”, the title song from Agnes Obel’s debut album, out on October 4th. Agnes Obel lives in Berlin and is still somewhat unknown here at home, but she did play at this year’s Spot Festival. She has a beautiful, light, and atmospheric vocal sound, writes excellent, subdued songs, and she is a very talented pianist with a penchant towards more quirky, dramatic chords – not unlike a Tori Amos. Back up singer Marianne Lewandowski sang elegantly, close to the lead vocal, Anders Pedersen was magnificent, especially on longing lap-steel-guitar, and it was especially impressive considering they only had rehearsed a couple of days. The audience applauded, but after a couple of songs the concentration in the room seemed to disappear, and the talking in the corners elevated to an irritating volume. It was a shame for Agnes Obel who really deserves to be heard. Not only is her song “Riverside” beautiful, but also her interpretation of John Cale’s “Close Watch” was perfect. Maybe, during her set, there was a tendency to monotony with her subdued and often drumless song, but only a little. Agnes Obel is a great talent that hopefully soon will return to these latitudes. Mark Lanegan ***** The concerts had now lasted just under an hour, and after a 15 minutes break Howe Gelb returned to the stage and entertained with another couple of songs and a few anecdotes about his friendship with Mark Lanegan. Finally Mark Lanegan entered the stage, and the mood changed immediately. Any onset to chatter disappeared, most of the lights were turned off so Lanegan stood in near dark at the center of the stage. With one hand firmly placed on the microphone, and the other equally so on the stand, he started out with “When You Number Isn’t Up” – one of his many song about feeling less than good, alone and lonely. Lanegan’s characteristic, deep and hoarse voice really stood out, so much your own throat almost dried out, and The Desoto Caucus was brilliant as backing band with sophisticated playing from not least the two guitar players Anders Pedersen and Nikolaj Heyman, and from the trumpet player Jacob Buchanan – but everybody did an outstanding job. We should also mention bass player Thøger Tetens Lund, drummer and percussionist Peter Dombernowsky, and keyboard and organ player Palle Hjort. It is beyond belief that they had only rehearsed for two days. Though Lund and Dombernowsky plays regularly with Lanegan in his duo project with Isobel Campbell. In recent years Lanegan has mostly done collaborations with the likes of Isobel Campbell, Queens Of The Stone Age, and Greg Dulli, with the last under the name The Gutter Twins, but this night the set list consisted – not surprisingly – of his solo albums even though the most recent was released 6 years ago. And since Lanegan is ever as good a song writer as he is a singer, his performance was an absolute delight, whether it was the more subdued songs, like “When Your Number Isn’t Up”, “One Way Street”, and “One Hundred Days”, or a garage rocking, noisy, outlet of energy like “Hit The City”. A few cover songs appeared as well, like Brook Benton’s “I’ll Take Care Of You” and Captain Beefheart’s “Clear Spot”, which Lanegan has previously recorded. All delivered by a unrelenting, intense, and completely non-moving Lanegan. The audience applauded enthusiastically, and Mark Lanegan mumbled a few “Thank you”s between the songs, and also gave a thank you to Agnes Obel. The concert goers that were closer to the stage than me, said that there were – at times – a hint of a smile on Lanegan’s lips. The same can most definitely be said about the audience, and when Lanegan & Co. said goodbye and left the stage after a good hour, massive applauding followed, and they came back for an encore consisting of two strong songs, Lanegan’s own spinechilling “Fix”, and the country classic “Wayfaring Stranger” in duet with Howe Gelb. Lanegan is still good company to feel bad in, and one must hope that he continues his collaboration with The Desoto Caucus, whose brilliant musicality impressed yet again. Luckily they return to Voxhall Thursday the 2nd of September, performing with Scout Niblett and John Doen. See you there! ------- Sorry about any weird phrases... Some Danish words are reluctant to be translated..
