Launch Radio Networks reports: TOOL has entered the mixing stage on its new album, according to sources close to the band, and is looking at an April or May release for the disc, its first since 2001's "Lateralus". As is typical for TOOL, few details have emerged about the project since the band reconvened earlier this year to begin recording. TOOL drummer Danny Carey told Launch that while the new music was hard to describe, he thought fans would have no problem recognizing it. "All I can say is you should probably just look at the past TOOL records," he said. "It's just kind of the next stage of development. Some of the tunes are pretty heavy on this one. It's still gonna be weird time signatures and all that stuff. It's just what comes out of us, you know. We just try to be true to our chemistry when we're in the little room in here together jamming, and what comes out comes out."
As reported last week, TOOL will release two mini-DVDs on December 20, both for tracks from "Lateralus". The discs, for the songs "Schism" and "Parabola", feature the videos for both tunes, commentary tracks from the members of TOOL and previously unreleased remixes. The group also reportedly has a live DVD in the works, although when that will be released remains undetermined.
TOOL singer Maynard James Keenan is preparing to release the first wines from his own personal vineyard. Three 2004 red wine blends will debut in the spring of 2006, with more information available at caduceus.org.

hey this gets me as hot and bothered as a new VR album but someone might give a shit....... Playbill.com is reporting that "Gabba Gabba Hey!", the new musical featuring the music of the rock group the RAMONES that debuted in Perth, Australia in August 2004, is headed to the U.S. Michael Herrmann, who penned the musical's book, told Playbill.com that a showcase performance of "Gabba" will be presented March 19, 2006, at the South By Southwest Festival in Austin, TX. An Off-Broadway run at New York's Zipper Theater is expected in May. Casting for the U.S. productions will be announced at a later date. The U.S. creative team will include Herrmann (writer/producer), Tommy Ramone (music director) and Nick Sheppard (music arranger). Theatregoers will hear such tunes as "I Wanna Be Sedated", "Beat on the Brat", "Biltzkrieg Bop", "53rd & 3rd" and "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker". Librettist Herrmann said in a previous statement, "'Gabba Gabba Hey!' is a fun show that aims to reinvent the traditional stage musical for performance in rock clubs. As the first musical to celebrate the perennially popular music of New York's rock scene — specifically, the RAMONES and NEW YORK DOLLS — this show has a definite edge and attitude, in keeping with the aesthetic demands of its target audience. But 'Gabba' is also very sweet and lyrical." About "Gabba", Herrmann added, "Think 'Grease'-on-speed and you're on the money — albeit with a generous dollop of colorful Lower East Side characters. With 18 high-energy RAMONES songs and a rather touching love story all performed in 70 minutes, 'Gabba Gabba Hey!' is streetwise yet heartfelt; retro but also new and innovative. Plus there's not a dull moment in it, I promise!"

I just came across this Bob Dylan news, don't know if it interests anyone, but here you go:
NEW YORK (Reuters) -- Legendary folk rocker Bob Dylan will start a new career as a radio DJ when he launches a new weekly music show on XM Satellite Radio next March.
The station said on Tuesday the show would feature music hand-picked by Dylan, writer of some of the enduring classics of popular music since the 1960s such as "Mr Tambourine Man," "Like a Rolling Stone" and "The Times They Are A-Changin'."
"Dylan will offer regular commentary on music and other topics, host and interview special guests including other artists and will take emails from XM subscribers," XM said.
Now 64, Dylan's anti-establishment folk songs were the anthems of a generation and he has released over 44 albums in a career spanning more than four decades.
"Songs and music have always inspired me. A lot of my own songs have been played on the radio, but this is the first time I've ever been on the other side of the mic," Dylan said in a statement.

Joey Burns Talks New Calexico Album
Jonah Flicker and Amy Phillips report: Ennio Morricone's fantasy house band, Calexico, have some surprises in store for their fans when the follow-up to 2003's Feast of Wire comes out this spring. Due April 11 on Quarterstick, their longtime label, Garden Ruin seeks to cement Calexico's reputation as more than just "that indie rock band with Mariachi horns".
"I guess it kind of sounds different from previous records," frontman Joey Burns told Pitchfork earlier this week. "The Southwestern element is downplayed more on this release. It's focusing more on the songs themselves. There's no instrumentals on this record."
Calexico have been riding high recently. They've been out on the road in support of their successful collaboration with Iron & Wine, In the Reins, and finally secured their place in the adult contemporary world when NPR recently aired a performance from this tour. That's got to be worth, like, three OC soundtrack appearances.
Burns said that Calexico's desire to branch out was inspired by working with Iron & Wine and Neko Case (the band appears on her forthcoming album, Fox Confessor Brings the Flood), as well as touring with Wilco. "It's helped us reconnect to the music scene in the States more, and I can see where in the past our music and our style has maybe been hard for people to identity with here, especially outside of the Western states. So having gotten to tour with Wilco and Iron & Wine, and playing festivals like Bonnaroo, has helped us play to bigger audiences and [ask], ‘What is about us that makes us different?' and 'What else do we have to offer that hasn't been highlighted before?'" "Listening to bands like Iron & Wine and Sufjan Stevens, digging into this tradition of singer/songwriters from the States, has had a big influence," Burns said. "I wanted to put down the nylon string guitar and pick up the steel string guitar, which may sound like a small factor, but for me, what you gravitate towards as far as what you're going to write songs on really does have an influence as far as where the songs are going to go."
Calexico's live improvisations also helped shape the sound of the album. "It's interesting to see what we can do to kind of continue on in the spirit of experimentation, trying new things and coming up with new sounds and new textures and arrangements," Burns said. "I really enjoyed performing and covering the song "Alone Again Or" [by Love] and just having the whole band singing and playing the trumpet, not so much in a Southwestern style, but more in a pop sense. So the first track off the record, "Cruel", is kind of a result of that. I think because of the climate here politically and socially, and the fact that the band is always into reinventing ourselves, we wound up kind of focusing on more of a classic American singer/songwriter or folk or rock influences."
The lyrics on Garden Ruin have more of a liberal political bent than the usual Calexico fare. "Touring a lot in Europe has presented a lot of questions to the band," Burns explained. "How do you feel about your government? Your country's choice for president? What's going on outside the international boundary lines? Living close to the border of Mexico, being born in Montreal, Canada-- these things kind of make you think outside of the TV box and what's being said and what's being focused on. So I think all things have an influence at some point on your life and eventually it kind of settles into your writing and your experiences as you get older, travel about, do music."
Garden Ruin tracklist:
01 Cruel 02 Yours and Mine 03 Bisbee Blue 04 Panic Open String 05 Letter to Bowie Knife Version 2 06 Roka 07 Lucky Dime Version 1 08 Smash 09 Deep Down Version 1 10 Nom de Plume 11 All Systems Red
In addition to the new album and their work on the new Neko Case record, Calexico have other collaborations planned, including work with Gotan Project and singer/songwriter Marianne Dissard (who appeared on Calexico's 2000 album Hot Rail. But there's one group that Calexico want to play with most of all:
"I really want to tour with Broken Social Scene," Burns said. "I love the fact that there's this kind of element of chaos where neither the band nor the audience knows exactly what's going to happen. That element of surprise is so rare these days, with music and stuff that's downloaded and programmed. The spontaneity factor has become squashed in the music business, and so the more you can kind of tap into that or at least open that factor up, I think it's exciting. You might fail and fall on your face, but you usually have fun doing it because you know that you've tried. And just as much as there might be moments where things fall apart, you're going to have those moments that are just sublime, that are just beautiful."

Song sites face legal crackdown By Ian Youngs BBC News entertainment reporter Unauthorised guitar tabs and other musical scores are widely available The music industry is to extend its copyright war by taking legal action against websites offering unlicensed song scores and lyrics. The Music Publishers' Association (MPA), which represents US sheet music companies, will launch its first campaign against such sites in 2006. MPA president Lauren Keiser said he wanted site owners to be jailed. He said unlicensed guitar tabs and song scores were widely available on the internet but were "completely illegal". Mr Keiser said he did not just want to shut websites and impose fines, saying if authorities can "throw in some jail time I think we'll be a little more effective". Bitter battles The move comes after several years of bitter legal battles against unauthorised services allowing users to download recordings for free. Publishing companies have taken action against websites in the past, but this will be the first co-ordinated legal campaign by the MPA. The MPA would target "very big sites that people would think are legitimate and very, very popular", Mr Keiser said. "The Xerox machine was the big usurper of our potential income," he said. "But now the internet is taking more of a bite out of sheet music and printed music sales so we're taking a more proactive stance." Music publishers and songwriters will consider all tools under the law to stop this illegal behaviour David Israelite National Music Publishers' Association David Israelite, president of the National Music Publishers' Association, added his concerns. "Unauthorised use of lyrics and tablature deprives the songwriter of the ability to make a living, and is no different than stealing," he said. "Music publishers and songwriters will consider all tools under the law to stop this illegal behaviour." Sandro del Greco, who runs Tabhall.co.uk, said the issue was not serious enough to warrant jail time and sites like his were not necessarily depriving publishers of income. Learn "I play the drums mainly but I play the guitar as well. I run the website and I still buy the [tab] books," he said. "The tabs online aren't deadly accurate so if someone really wants to know it they'll buy the book. "But most of the bands I listen to don't have tab books to buy so if you get them online, that's the only way you can really learn it unless you work it out yourself." The campaign comes after lyric-finding software PearLyrics was forced off the internet by a leading music publishing company, Warner Chappell. 'No alternative' PearLyrics worked with Apple's iTunes, searching the internet to find lyrics for songs in a user's collection. "I just don't see why PearLyrics should infringe the copyright of Warner Chappell because all I'm doing is searching publicly-available websites," PearLyrics developer Walter Ritter said. "It would be different if they had an alternative service that also provided lyrics online and also integrated [with iTunes] like PearLyrics did. But they don't offer anything like that at all." A Warner Chappell statement said the company wanted to ensure songwriters were "fairly compensated for their works and that legitimate sites with accurate lyrics are not undermined by unlicensed sites". "We have requested that PearWorks provide us with information regarding the sources of their lyrics, and have further asked that they discontinue the service if these sources are operating without a licence." news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/4508158.stm

MTV.com is reporting that John Garcia, singer of QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE frontman Josh Homme's previous troupe KYUSS, joined QOTSA on stage for three songs from their influential hard-rock band's catalog as part of an encore that capped an already surprise-filled night on Tuesday (Dec. 21) at the Wiltern LG in Los Angeles.
"Now I want to play you something really old," Homme announced after returning to the stage following the main-set closer, "A Song for the Dead".
With guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen, bassist Alain Johannes, keyboardist Natasha Shneider and drummer Joey Castillo doing their best to keep up, Homme and Garcia ripped into "Thumb", off their 1992 desert-rock masterpiece "Blues for the Red Sun"; "Hurricane", from their '95 swan song "And the Circus Leaves Town"; and the slow-jam fan favorite "Supa Scoopa and Mighty Scoop". Homme was all smiles as he dug into the forgotten low-end riffs — most of which he wrote in his teens — and the acerbic Garcia was on his best behavior, turning his back to the crowd at junctures where he'd usually give them the finger.
