i've been around this hell-hole long enough to know that it has always sucked.
perhaps everone should quit dicking around with their lives and go out and save the environment or promote world peace or some shit. what are you going to learn or accomplish here?
the best you'll do around here is to find a picture of mark's tattoos and what your favorite fuckin word is or something.
bubble is on the water bubble is on the air. get higher.

Maybe if Mark would put out that damn gunfighting music or something of his own creation all would be right with the world. Moks (and others) would come out of seclusion (and "self induced" celibacy), dress down a few poor innocent bystanders and all would be back to “normal”.

For all its 700+ members, there's only about 15-20 people who post with any sort of regularity. And when most of those people have been around for years, they either know other longstanding members well enough to converse in more a more private manner away from a public forum or have said pretty much they're ever going to say to others. And new faces very rarely hang around long enough to post in double figures, let alone get to know everyone/anyone else here, it all gets a bit quiet. And with the Screaming Trees but a distant memory and Mark Lanegan not seemingly that arsed about making Mark Lanegan records anymore, that doesn't leave much else to say.

but I thought this was a place where peoples musical vocabulary could grow and find new things, new things that they would not find on their own but due to the diverse tastes of this board we could all share things........... First time I've visited for ages and this is what I read when just today, I was driving along, listening to Ulver's 'Christmas'. I don't listen to anything I don't want to, so have been skipping this track since I got the '05 cd except that every time I've listened to it, I got a little bit further into it each time until just today I realised I listened to the whole thing. I remember thinking some of it reminded me of joy division

I used to admin a site with over 10,000 members and these things tend to run in cycles.
You get a whole bunch of people that have been there for ages running out of stuff to say, new people come and go with alarming regularity as they feel (sometimes wrongly, sometimes rightly) that they have to impress the "elite" members before they're allowed to start having any fun of their own, and then everyone buggers off and it all starts anew with an almost completely new set of people - occasionally you get people coming back to moan about how much better it was when they used to contribute (although this is usually a way of them trying to imply that a board was better because they used to contribute) before they go back off to other boards, slagging the previous one off. And then there's the people who used to pop in every now and then, get involved in stuff for no other reason than there were threads to get involved in, and then bugger off again - and these are the people that are probably the most missed, as it's usually that sort of person that keeps messageboards alive and vibrant...
There's certainly a case to be answered about this board being a bit stale at the moment. But it's been worse (for example, it's far less cliquey and exclusive than it used to be), and it will probably get better when Mark does something that bring people to a messageboard dedicated to his (as opposed to his contributions to other peoples') music. Till then, it's up to no-one but the current membership to make sure that the place stays alive and interesting until that eventuality. How that's done is anyone's guess - although I remember a whole bunch of "getting to know you" sot of threads from the beginning of the old official MLB board that got everyone chatting regardless of postcount that got everyone talking about themselves and other people, and it's that sort of social interaction (as opposed to semi-closed conversation that many threads can turn into) that this place is currently lacking...

I agree with just about everything Foz had to say and the onething that's most relevent is we need to start fresh new threads to get people talking. One of my big complaints about this forum is the never ending threads that have been going on for 2 plus years, that usually have very little contributions other than a song title or banter. I'm not saying that those threads aren't fun (but I tend to ignore them) I'm just saying that kind of thing isn't a full conversation.

Ah yes, a purge Great things, in that they free up shitloads of space and get rid of all the clutter, making the place a lot more accessible to the passing browser who just maybe fancies being part of the community. The only downside of them is that people's postcounts will suffer because of it and in my experience, this creates a load of moaning and even more spam than was there in the first place while people will post any old bollocks just to get their stars back. Last board I adminned this happened - so what we did was remove postcounts and rankings completely. There was initial bitching, but when the only thing that set posters apart is what they actually say rather than the number of times that they say it, it raised the level of actual conversation and interaction to a rather large degree. Just my suggestion anyway - rather than moaning about how this place isn't as good as it used to be, then maybe other suggestions could be put forward about how else we can improve our little corner of the interwebs, because it is our little corner and it's just as much our responsibility to make it fun and interesting as it is Raeni's for having it here in the first place and Mark's for giving us some common ground for us to get together and chat. You never know, something might just work

Thanks, Foz...... the Nirvana board I post at too is having some similar issues at the moment. (there's even a question now of getting rif of the 'free discussion' forum there, because the mods and the high post count spammers naturally don't get a long and just egg eachother on...) maybe a board upgrade would be a good excuse for a fresh start? I've never seen people here to be really willing to have "real" conversations.... at least not on the actual board... I have a feeling everyone is pouring their hearts and souls to eachother over IM, but when they come here they just post BS?

We did an experiment once at the board I worked on with getting shot of General Chat once, but it was a limited success to be honest so it was eventually reinstated - we also tried having separate free discussion/stupid stuff forums in order to keep the threads where people wanted to talk about news and other stuff without the threads being hijacked, but that died on its arse as well. Getting shot of the postcount was probably the only thing that worked well, as when people wanted to get a point across, they had to rely on something other than 'seniority' implied by a number under their name in order to do so.
A board upgrade would be a decent idea in general, although it's used by so few people at the mo that it probably isn't worth the time and possible expense to work on.

i honestly don't think there's that much wrong with the board overall. people who want to chat about Mark, chat about Mark. people who don't and want to post a little shite, do that in the All the Rest section. i don't see the problem in letting people post about what they want to post about....even if you don't like it or disagree with it. you don't like it? don't read it. as long as everyone can be civil to each other...that's all that matters, no? i don't want to control what people chat about or how often they do chat. just have a laugh, talk about music a bit, don't be a prick, have a wank and go to bed.
maybe everyone's getting lives all of a sudden, so they're not on the board as much....who knows and who cares? sure...it was a little more fun in the old days, but hey....times change. also, if people hate this board so much....then why do they still post? why check the board everyday? even those who don't post anymore came out of the woodwork to throw in their 2 cents about why the board sucks....so they must still check the board all the time. so it must not be THAT awful...c'mon! (it can be lame at times though, i do agree. but so does everything after awhile...except wanking) it's just a fucking message board. life is way too short to give any fuck about inane things like this. i even wrote too much about this...what a waste of time...i should've been having a wank. anyfuck, post...have a little fun...waste a little time....or don't.....it doesn't matter.

I just have to mention that I only post at two forums and this place being one of them. I've lurked at a few other places and this place is one of the best forums on the net. Some places actually don't even get daily posts and have barely any activity. Even with all the never-ending threads here, it's not boring.

Options are there for a reason... Yet people complain when others choose to use them for whatever silly reason...Options are simply options and choice is choice... I agree with Foz and Dc and TT and fuk what the hell I agree with a lot... People do what they want and others can pick apart or find fault in anything if they choose but where's the fun in that... I do think the issue of others trying to control the doings of others is a problem... If they aren't posting anything harmful it really shouldn't be an issue what they do in the area for it... I haven't been on the board as long as many of you... I think it's about the same as I showed ups and downs... Complaints and all... I appreciate Foz having a positive view of things and some real thoughts for solutions to complaints however I don't think it should be used as a way to control others K... Raeni is our moderator... She does her best... She throws down when it's needed but allows free will and fun which is what life is about... and yes TT... I think this place is a lot of fun at times and certainly distracts from the mundane world when I want for it too...

J. Pizzle (and flutter girl in the other thread) are just being jerks. Not really - it's just showing concern for a place that they like/liked. They've both been around here for ages and will probably both still be about when everyone else has got bored and buggered off. Nothing jerky about asking what happened, if they weren't arsed about it they'd just go off somewhere else. And I agree with Twinkletoes that this is a great board with some great people on it. It'd just be better if there was more people around sometimes

because at time i can feel totally out of the loop You out of the loop? I have no idea what anyone's talking about. What's so different about this board? I'd have no idea. The deal with me is sometimes (more lately than ever before) life likes to fucking whallop me in the head and I don't have any time to spend monitoring this board. I don't have time to read my email. In fact, I can't get online more than a couple times a week. All anyone does anymore is upload/download music, which leaves me without a way to share so I'm out of the loop there. I have no time to do online research and keep up on every single thing that goes on, so I'm out of the loop when all these side projects come up. I'm out of the loop on myspace because I can't get the fucker to load up in the time I have to check it, much less be able to go to all the myspaces in the world to find news. And since no one cares about anything but themselves anymore, no one ever emails me to say Hey - Mark is working on my album. Can you put it in the news? Wouldn't it makes sense to advertise as much as possible? but no, just put it on OUR MySpace and let the world find it. So because I can't get on the net much, I'm out of the loop on everything, and look like an idiot because I never know when anything's happening, because no one tells me. But who cares, really. Hope this wasn't too boring. I have to let the spalings.net site go now. Anyone who wants anything off there, copy it now before it expires.

hey perspective, I'm not being a jerk. I lurk the MLB very often, i love the place. I've gotten to meet great people through it.
my suggestion is, we erase all the old threads and start anew. fresh. erase the past. capoot! im sure we could do that.
