frauleinkiil - I like! What's frightening about a square? Thank you I guess I find a square canvas a bit frightening because - unlike say a 30x90 cm canvas - the proportions doesn't seem (to me at least) to have an editing quality. You have to consider the image according to both the height and the width of the canvas, and the canvas itself doesn't give anything as to how the painting should be structured. Maybe it's because the square seems to be a perfectly balanced shape - which makes me want to bring it out of balance, and create a new balance within the paiting itself... Does that make sense?

It has a sense for me... I use some square canvas myself just because it's "marketing" and I can mail them !!! But I'm fond of tryptics myself ... What is your technical ? I personally dont have any in despite I'm begged to teach it ... Ooooh my Mine convinced me but Im shy ... I mix many technicals ... I use basics - acrylics , watercolours, sketching crayon ...- and i mix everything ... I use 3D dough now and feeling like a student ' What is your basis ? Acrylic, oil ? Your Size chosen is nice whatever, nice to use and terribly opened ... It's just an open door... With EVERYTHING inside...

And even though I love the smell of oil and terpentine I think it's sort of bad for your health I prefer oil pinting, but acrylic is starting to make sense now. I don't mix different techniques (at least not yet...) - so your anarchistic approach to techniques and materials sounds really interesting. Have you posted any of your works here? I'd love to see some of them

Square canvases ARE scary....So the only square ones I've used I did a set of three and lined them up along the wall. Square is also a weird size to hang.

I do agree Thank you both muchly I use some square canvas myself just same room I sleep in. I know how horrible it is.... ! Walk and Breathe Walk and Breathe - the painter's "just smile and wave boys" Square canvases ARE scary....So the only square ones I've used I did a set of three and lined them up along the wall. Square is also a weird size to hang. They are. And I have two more standing - or rather creepily lurking - behind my door just waiting. I don't know what happened to me the day I bought three, thinking "I should paint a sort af triptych thing!" Madness, I tell you. Madness.

Pictures of my paintings are up on this site: shonebiswana.webs.comedit: I didn't make this because I'm so terribly fond of myself, but I kinda thought it was a good idea after someone who was interested in a painting asked if she could just google me to get more info. hahahah ahem.. no..

Very tr00! Sometimes just looking at an interestingly shaped canvas can instantly give you an idea what to paint. A square painting seems to eat inspiration for lunch..

There's odourless terpentine, or so my mom tells me, if that might help. I've always been a acrylic fan, but now that I'm completely in love with doing Hundertwasser paintings, I feel oil paint can give me even brighter colours.

I made my own pigments in the lab earlier this year... Prussian blue, aquamarine, lead white, blue/green verditer, and some orange thing. Then a new chemical pigment discovered last year with no practical purpose as it's made with rare metals.
I've ground them into linseed oil to make paints, but I have no real experience with oils, so it's hard to figure out the consistency for making them. Fun though.

That's mega awesome! Do you guys have an art department?? Maybe someone there can help. I'd seriously look into making and then using your own oil paint, übercool.

I've switched schools now, but I think there's more of an art department here. All the halls here are lined with original painting and murals.
My other half knows how to oil paint, but she's 2500miles away. I also found that you can cure linseed with lead oxide at about 180C, rather than boiling it at ~300, which is a big fire hazard.

Wow, Maidli, that's really excellent - you're capturing the time-worn-ness in his face (ok I know there's a better way to put that).
