First of all, this is a awesome fucking song. I know the topic is really cliche, I usually ignore any anti Iraqi war stuff because its so tired, but its a cool fucking song. Anyway, does anyone have accurate lyrics? Particularly to Isobel's Latin parts ? I'm pretty sure that Deus Ibi Est means "God There Is".

As you said, the song is awesome. It makes my spine shiver. I've tried to take down the lyrics but it's a bit hard for a couple of reasons, one of them being my first language, which is not English. The version I've got is quite blurred and I have a bit of a trouble wondering what parts of the song might really mean. Anyhow, here's what I've come up with:
>> Against my will to these side shores an unknown forces draw me Bounden to a future shaped by ancestors before me Day and day I march there There’s someone else’s drum I have searched far foreign matters there’s nowhere left to run
The pending storm rise up Rise up or demons I shall shame you Down the barrel of my gun and one by one I’ll name you Day and day my brothers we go marching after war Yet we never understand what we’re fighting for
Worldly desires and worldly gains designed for worldly manner I’m a master of the heart with years and hands to lender Soldiers come and soldiers go so change by/thy love for thee A circle in the chain of life are fighting to be free
So come my Lord [something missing] cut some private drama Sweet Jesus and the holy divine (with) an afterlife to come on Day and day I’ve marched there There’s someone else’s drum I have searched far foreign lands there’s nowhere left to run
What comes to the title Deus ibi est, it's part of a 9th century Gregorian chant Ubi Caritas. It begins with a line "Ubi caritas et amor Deus ibi est", which could roughly be translated "Where there is love and charity, there is God".
I think the chorus of Lanegan and Campbell's song is Deus caritas et amor, Deus caritas, Deus ibi (est) but I'm not 100 % sure. In my mind that would translate roughly to something like "Dear loving God, dear God, there is God", which I really can't bend to proper English.
The parts that I'm most unsure of I've marked red. I would love to hear your opinion on especially those parts and as a matter of fact on the whole song. Please give me a hand and help me putting the real lyrics of this song together.

I tried to transcribe it when I first heard it a while back. I just fixed my version up with a fresh listen and some legit Latin.
Deus Ibi Est
against my will to these side shores an unknown force has drawn me bound unto future shaped by ancestors before me day on day they march the beat to someone else's drum I have searched far foreign lands there's no where left to run
impending storm rise up rise up oh demons I shall shame you [look] down the barrel of my gun and one by one I'll name you day on day my brothers leave go marching off to war yet we never understand for what we're fighting for
We'll leave desires and worldly gains (games?) designed for worldly manner I'm a master of the heart with years and hands to lend up soldiers come and soldiers go some changed by love for thee a circle in the chain for life while fighting to be free
So come my love and we should dance to God's own private drama Sweet Jesus and the holy divine afterlife to come up day on day on they march the beat to someone elese's drum I have searched far foreign lands there's no where left to run

wow. thats great. thanks guys. i think you hit the nail on the head with the latin parts, i knew it was a part of a chant but i was unable to decode it as im far removed from my latin classes. at any rate, i think you guys were completely correct and my only difference of opinion comes on marks parts and thats the ending of the lines
manner lender come up
I think that they simply pronounce the words like
man-eh (man) lend-eh (lend) com-eh (come)
possibly for the sake of rhyming/sounding cool
anyway, thanks a lot. youve been great help and i would not have figured out the latin otherwise. thanks, i wish the rest of the cd was a little more like htis song. still some cool stuff.
also, is this version cut off at the beginning and end because at the end it sounds like mark is gonna say somehting else then it ends? maybe becuase its a sampler?

here's my take on the lyrics, and they frankly are much different from the above transcriptions........
here goes....
Some will die in hot pursuit and fiery auto crashes Some will die in hot pursuit while sifting through my ashes Some will fall in love with life and drink it from a fountain That is pouring like an avalanche coming down the mountain I don't mind the sun sometimes the images it shows I can taste you on my lips and smell you in my clothes Cinnamon and sugary and softly spoken lies You never know just how you look through other people's eyes

Is this track on the sampler??? The version I have is from the radio broadcast, which explains the cuts. Also, I agree with you on the pronounciation thing, I took "man-a" "lend-a" etc out of my version. I like to second guess myself.

i find it funny there's a whole debate about lyrics for this here. but cool nonetheless - glad everyone is excited.
album will have all the lyrics in it.
here are the 'official' Deus ones here. Just to silence the debate. Prize to whoever got closest!
1. DEUS IBI EST
Against my will to these sad shores An unknown force has drawn me Bound unto a future shaped by ancestors before me Day on day I march the beat to someone else's drum I have searched far foreign lands there's nowhere left to run
Impending storm rise up rise up Oh demons I shall shame you! Look down the barrel of my gun and one by one I'll name you Day on day my brothers leave go marching off to war Yet we never understand for what we're fighting for
Worldly desires and worldly gains Designed for worldly men I'm a master of the heart with ears and hands to lend Soldiers come and soldiers go some changed by love for thee A circle in the chain of life all fighting to be free
So come my lord and we shall dance To God's own private drum Sweet Jesus and the holy vine The afterlife to come Day on day I march the the beat to someone else's drum I have searched far foreign lands there's nowhere left to run
*Latin translation reads 'where there is tender care and love, god is present'.

They're a worry. No wonder they killed off all the Indians and took over their aloe vera cactus plantations.
