I'll be still out on the road, playing tiny fucking clubs to 50 people, when I'm f***ing 65 years old. And that's fine. Said like a real musician!

The [Nirvana] Box Set leaked online because it was released in like South America a week before the US and Europe.... It wasn't leaked that much. I had my eyes open the whole time just to see if it was leaking and I couldn't find anything new. Not that I would have downloaded it since I already had a copy of the thing reserved and planned to listen from start to finish the first time... Thing is, most of the stuff on there was already in circulation since lots of it was on all the bootlegs way back when. And being the Nirvana franchise, they always want to take every cent they can get from you, so they kept it pretty hush-hush until it came out. That would all contribute to why it wasn't pirated too much, oh, and the fact that they have FBI warnings on them! That's something I have never seen in any other instance! And when it comes to box sets, With the Lights Out is pretty awesome. 3CDs and a DVD of performances along with a booklet, which is cool and nice packaging, it's better than any other box I've seen. And it's filled with pretty new stuff to most people other than the crazy nirvana fans that would buy anything mentioning/related to nirvana. Although, there are lots of tracks on it that say they were previously unreleased, but in there are songs that were on the singles and compilations and stuff, which really have been released.

also alot of bands will give their shit straight away to GET famous, when they get there it becomes bad again i didn't read the whole thing so i don't know what's your position on this. but they give it away hoping they won't have to flip burgers 'til they get old. there's a difference between making the decision to give stuff out and getting your shit stolen without having any control over it.

everyone in life is entitled to equal pay for the job they do, but whos fault is it ? When a musician completes his work he or she hands it over to the label who in turn gives it out for FREE to every music website and radio station (but mind you only the ones who will play it why send your shit out for free to people who wont play it that would be silly right?)they think will play it........that my dear is free advertisement AND when some shithead uploads it onto the internet and it opens the floodgates and the musician gets ripped off, because mind you none of the 5,000 people who download it will buy it of course cos they are all lowlife scum and they pass it on to there 5000 lowlife scum buddies and those people in turn post it on websites like this and post Mark Lanegan Band on the what the fuck is in your cd player thread and 2 people read that and think hmmmm that m0ng0 fool has great taste in music maybe I will steal that too, next thing you know its everywhere and best buy has a pallet of metallica cd's no one will buy cos they all got it for free.....thats bullshit look at record sales, the numbers dont support it....no michael jacksons latest cd did not sell because of internet piracy it did not sell because it SUCKS.....until musicians decide to stop signing a contract with the devil it will continue.
If you are so concerned about getting paid then run it your fucking self, why hand your shit over to people who really dont give a shit about you anyways other than how much money they can make from you.......and dont give me this bullshit about you cant make it without a label, be as creative with your business as you are with your music or let someone else handle it for you and shut the fuck up, its funny musicians complain about getting ripped off by their fans yet take it in the ass from the record label........go fucking figure.
In my opinion its a wash, as many as you lose to piracy you gain with the free advertisement, because there is a whole world of music out there that 2 years ago you and I would have never ever ever ever heard.

this is a quote from someone I have INFINTE respect for, whom is in a position like Marks but on higher level because he is a label owner as well......... CMG: As a label head and musician, what is your position on file sharing? MacKaye: I don’t mind it, doesn’t bother me. I like people to support the label, but as a musician, when I write a song I want it to be heard. So if you ask me would I rather have 200 people listening to that song or $200, I would take the 200 people. I don’t think it’s nearly as dire as the major labels do. Anytime any corporation or the government starts talking about inflation or they start laying people off, it’s not actually for what is happening, but based on what they speculate will happen. They’re always looking ahead. The uproar over file-sharing, it really wasn’t damaging the major labels as much as they’re saying. They’re just predicting that if they don’t say something now it’s gonna get them later on. I say good riddance. If Dischord has to go as part of it, if it means destroying major labels, then I’m fine with that. The creation of the record created a consumable. At that point, for the first time, really in the history of music, there was something to sell. I understand you could sell sheet music, you could sell piano rolls, but the idea of owning music as a consumable item had not really happened before. The record labels have had over a hundred years of a monopoly on selling music and they’ve twisted and perverted music to their ends because they want to make money. They’ve had a good run, and if they lose out, tough shit. I love this guy. Who is he?
