did WFTHG seriously just post here too? I didn't recognize him. He wasn't polarized. Indeed! I have shed my old gimmick. Monday seems so far away!

i feel Marks voice sounds best in 1995, 2000, 2001 and 2010. For much of the 2003 and 2004 shows Mark sounds like he has a cold and his voice lacks range and sounds rather nasal at times. I personally think working with Queens ... and the heavier Mark Lanegan Band stuff took its toll on his vocals. it's interesting because the solo/MLB shows i most enjoyed were actually in 1998 and 2003... i know he sounded kinda scratchy/nasal at times in 2003, but that was the best band he ever used for solo shows. Dynamics, skill and sound. The acoustic encore with She Don't Too Much, Mockingbirds etc was beyond belief for my friends and i (all longterm fans) who has been dying to hear him play with an acoustic band that better represented his first 5 albums. that was mind-blowing. as was hearing Wedding Dress for the first time (it was the HCTWC tour, before Bubblegum was released). it had such a groove. likewise, 1998 was special because the band were special again. Johnson, Shepherd, Olsen and Boquist. Awesome. in hindsight, we all knew the vocals were too loud, but the religious devotion to Mark's voice wasn't as full-on back then, and soundmen didn't seem able to push his voice out front. That English tour consisted of one show at a half-filled Astoria, with Mike Johnson climbing onto the stage from the crowd, Ben Shepherd going for a piss next to my friend, and Lanegan coming out to speak to (and nick a cigarette) off four of us who were hanging around... and one other guy who was trying to get a shitload of stuff signed. by comparison, 2001s UK tour seemed a pretty morbid, miserable affair. it was like the death of that era - and Mark has said something similar about how Field Songs was just putting a line under that stuff before moving on. I'm sure the shows would be pretty good if i listened back to it, but it just seemed sludgy. i think all that stuff was a factor in moving on from the Mike Johnson era and starting a new chapter with more dynamic rock songs like Skeletal History and the Bubblegum material.. so, my judgement is clouded by memories and stuff. in terms of vocal sound in a live environment- Soulsavers in 2007 and 2009, along with the Greg & Mark acoustic shows, are the best ive ever heard him. im not really into the Isobel Campbell thing, so i dont know. i dunno. im probably just talking shit before i finish work and go home.
