The Sparklehorse tribute album is finally on the way entitled Last Box Of Sparklers, with Mark contributing Spirit Ditch alongside a whole bunch of artists giving their time (all proceeds to mental health charities, and - from what I can remember from announcements last year - to Mark Linkous' widow to help with his remaining medical costs). Hover over names on this site to hear snippets.

I can't believe nobody has commented on this yet! I mean Sparklehorses songs are so magical! I think Spirit Ditch is an interesting choice and I can't wait to hear more...
Other than being excited I don't have anything substantial to add, but thought this thread needed AT LEAST one comment ...so here it is

On the offchance that anyone's actually interested in this, the double album is about 75% done, and is now taking pledges for the remainder. Details for what you get for your money (downloads, CDs, Vinyl, TShirts etc) are here - the album is planned for December, pledges are being taken until next month. EDIT: should be said that a 50k target seems a bit on the steep side to complete a record - no idea how much these things cost (especially when I assume that the artists would be giving their time for free) but they could do with lowering their ceiling a bit...

I'm not familiar with Sparklehorse whatsoever. Where should I start?

Hard to say! You'll probably get a different answer from anyone who's ever heard him, as he has that knack of getting right under your skin depending on mood... He can be quite heavy going because of his problems, but he did recognise this and added a knowing, sometimes silly element. Dark Night Of The Soul (his collab with Danger Mouse and David Lynch plus a whole bunch of vocalists) is nicely accessible even if he - and Vic Chesnutt - didn't live to see it released, I guess of interest to this place would be Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot as it contains Spirit Ditch that Mark sings, but in all honesty he's one of those artists that if you like one song of his, you'll love the lot as the man was extraordinary.

Silence - do you have any idea what they'll do if they don't reach their goal? I've seen some places that say if the goal isn't reached, everyone gets their money back (or doesn't get charged). But this one says specifically that they will keep whatever they get and then continue on to try to finish the funding elsewhere. Just wondering if there's any way to know if that means you still get your album (as in, will they go ahead and record and be able to produce the results if the goal isn't reached?)
I was curious because it does seem like $50,000 is a high goal - if they set it that way in order to give to charity that's cool too - as long as they are still able to provide folks with the record (I assume they would, it just doesn't say what happens if they don't make it).

As most of it is already recorded, I'd guess that - and hope that - they lower their expectations. If there are artists on their whose "kind permission" to appear requires a few coins, then cut them loose. If the cash doesn't stretch to a 12-panel luxury CD set, put in in a jewel case instead. There's a bit in the blurb about wanting to make this like Live 8, which is ridiculous given the newness of the organisation, the lack of much in the way of mainstream interest and the fringes that the contributing artists find their audience. Much as I support the artists involved and the cause they're gathered to help, 50 grand is silly - if that's what it takes just to release it, they'll never profit and the charity will suffer.
It's something I want to happen and not just because Mark's on it or that I like the songs. I just hope it's not scuppered by either greed or idealism.

Some more pertinent pledge info, as Mark has kindly donated a thing or two...
$50 will also net you a signed Black Pudding CD (2 available) Gone! $350 will get you an acoustic guitar signed by Mark (only 1 available)

Not to sound negative or rain on anyone's parade, but I always saw Sparklehorse as a not-as-good Elliott Smith.

I'm excited for this. Just read that the organizers hung out with Mark prior to the Philly show. Interesting that they are Philly based. I hope this comes to fruition.

Sounds like Dinosaur Jr have pulled out of the project, citing time constraints

Yes, it's a worry. Now that Pitchfork and Rolling Stone have finally noticed and have run articles, interest has grown and they've added $10,000 in 1 day (and Mark's guitar has been sold). 50 grand still seems a lot for something where pretty much everything that will be recorded for it has been, friends of mine have put out records for much less and it's a daunting figure to hit - they might have been better off going for 25k or even 10 so that people will be less reluctant to contribute, and then just keep on going once each milestone has been hit rather than go for the whole lot in one go.
They've just extended their deadline by a week as I type this, so it's now 18 days instead of 11 which seems sensible given the huge shortfall and piqued interest. But I suspect that this will only be met if someone with a lot of cash decides to make up the difference with a huge donation, or they just go with what they have and let the record actually sell to make up the rest.

Knowing that the people behind it - Ted and Jessica Richardson - run a recording studio and have been involved in producing albums, it surprises me that they're asking for so much. I find myself dearly hoping it isn't because some of the artists/bands or the pair who "handed over" what they'd amassed for their own tribute album are requiring monetary recompense.

The original project was a charity thing anyway (money was to be raised directly to offset Linkous' medical expenses to alleviate the burden on his surviving family, behaviour I always found curious from the world's largest economy), so I'm not sure if money changed hands or the project was just passed on to more experienced hands - I know that this particular thing has been an ongoing thing for almost 2 years, and projects that go on that long without proper support go under with sad regularity. That's not to say that it's a lot of cash!
On the plus side, and importantly for anyone wondering whether to pledge or not, a message from the co-ordinator:
So there you have it. Pledge away!

Extended again to December 14thzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...
They're never going to hit $50,000 (how many indie records released nowadays do that anyway?). It's probably time that they realised this, and just finish the bloody thing so that people can buy it (which is probably a much easier way of raising money anyway) and let the charities have access to the money raised so far - it's doing nobody any good to have it sitting there doing nothing.

I've been watching this and a couple days ago the countdown was in the hours. I checked today and it's back to 7 days! I want this but I'm reluctant to pull the trigger. Has anyone else contributed?

Blimey, looks like they might do it! 13 hours to go, $4300 short (unless IGG extend it again) - even if they don't, that's some money they've sourced...
