We would like you to know that Mark has written and contributed a wonderful song to the art/music-project Where the Candybeetle Dwells by Willem Kolvoort.
Where the Candybeetle Dwells…
An art/music-project by Willem Kolvoort in collaboration with eleven pop bands.
For almost twenty-five years, expressive artist Willem Kolvoort (1965) has been making his characteristic posters for music concerts for bands from home and abroad at the internationally trend-setting Vera Club for the International Pop Underground.
His distinctive style is widely appreciated and the reputation of his cartoonlike posters reaches far beyond the Dutch borders. Over the last few decades Kolvoort has designed more than 400 different posters and there are avid collectors of his screen prints.
Naturally, when Willem makes his posters, the band and their music are always the starting point.
The designer makes himself subservient to this and tries to express the announcement in an appealing poster.
But what happens if this principle is completely reversed? Making not the band the starting point, but the designer of the posters?
That is the basis of the project Where the candybeetle Dwells..., which Willem Kolvoort thought of by invitation of Publisher Philip Elchers as interpretation for a special book publication.
He asked a few of the numerous bands for whom he has made posters over the past years, whether they would write a song and perform it, based on one of his graphic works.
To his surprise, all of the music bands approached responded enthusiastically and they were immediately prepared to contribute to his plan. And now the artists Mark Lanegan, Fred Cole, My Friend Television, Roald van Oosten, Spilt Milk, Meindert Talma, The Hive Dwellers, Whipster, Joost Dijkema and Traumahelikopter are ready to write their song based on a Willem Kolvoort work of art and to record it with their own band in their own studio.
The plan is for eleven bands to participate in the project, each making their own song based on the same number of different Willem Kolvoort originals. These illustrations are interrelated and form a series.
All the different songs will be pressed on vinyl, which comes in a specially made sleeve, also including the illustrations that inspired the music and the lyrics to the songs.
The publication will be in English and produced by different participants directed by Publisher Philip Elchers in a limited, numbered and by Willem Kolvoort signed edition of 900 standard and 100 luxury copies.
