The "candid commentary" bit is what intrigues me. I think Mark isn't exactly in his comfort zone when answering questions or other forms of publicity-speak, so maybe it will be a good chance to see what he really thinks of life, music, etc....

I Am the Wolf will be published in June 13, 2017 for Da Capo Press (288 pages)
"With a voice that Pitchfork has called “as scratchy as a three-day beard yet as supple and pliable as moccasin leather,” former Screaming Trees and Queens of the Stone Age vocalist Mark Lanegan draws frequent comparisons to wounded masters of doom like Tom Waits, Nick Cave, and Leonard Cohen. But Lanegan's talents aren't limited to his vocal skills. His lyrics are on par with the best of them, exploring with Blakeian insight the stark and scorched emotional terrain that exists somewhere beyond sadness, addiction, trauma, and spiritual longing. Now, for the first time ever, the reclusive singer presents a comprehensive look at his lyrics, the stories behind them, and the making of his albums as well as photos, insights, and ephemera from a long career in rock 'n' roll, I Am the Wolf gives fans a rare and candid glimpse into the inner workings of a living—and singular—rock legend."

Well, I'm interested. I'm a fan, but I do wonder about the comparison with Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen and especially Tom Waits. I love Mark's voice more than the others, but have to admit that I don't think that consistency of songwriting genius has been shown - I'd put up Whiskey through Bubblegum as brilliant, but I'd struggle from there on. I realise this is one of these ultimately futile/irrelevant debates. Actually, as a novelist, I'd expect Tom Waits to be completely dishonest and Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen to be pretty honest - not sure where I'd put Mark. Of course, that doesn't necessarily make for a good/bad book.
Thing we all have to recognise is that having a voice is no bad thing - worked for Elvis Presley and generally you'd say that everything else that happened to/around Elvis was pretty rubbish.

Blakeian is the perfect word for the imagery in his lyrics.
So excited to read about what Mark thinks about songwriting and anything else. I can't wait for this book!

"With a voice that Pitchfork has called “as scratchy as a three-day beard yet as supple and pliable as moccasin leather..."
I'm a fan of the music but that's laying it on a bit thick, isn't it?
He has indeed been compared to Tom Waits, Nick Cave, and Leonard Cohen in reviews over the years
"... the reclusive singer presents a comprehensive look at his lyrics, the stories behind them, and the making of his albums as well as photos, insights, and ephemera from a long career in rock 'n' roll..."
I don't believe. I don't believe we'll get a look at the stories behind the lyrics. doubting Thomas, would love to be proved wrong

I'm kinda torn with the idea of this book, I always have (and probably always will) use music to understand/project my own feelings. Some of the darkest albums I listen to will leave me uplifted because I find them cathartic. I don't tend over analyse music that I listen to to find the composers meaning or emotion so the idea that Mark will explain some songs/albums and their inspiration isn't appealing to me too much (I will no doubt buy the book anyway). But maybe I'm just being a fussy cunt and should get over myself.

I think most of the time when he's been asked to explain lyrics he himself has said it's not up to him to say what they mean, he leaves it up to the listener. I think though that I can compartmentalize - what something means to me can stay that way, even if I hear it's about something else. Sometimes I hear a song I like and attach a meaning to it, and find out later I had the lyrics all wrong - but I'll still hear the 'wrong' words when I listen again, because that's what that song is to me!

I suppose I sound like Mark can do nothing right and I dont want to come off like that. The idea of the book has peaked my interest, I just always like the way he kept himself to himself in regards to "explaining" any material he releases. It'll make an interesting read no matter how I feel about it and hopefully sell well.

What do the symbols signify? Cryptic symbols drive me nuts with curiosity. I always think that everyone else understands and I'm being dense and missing out on some important message. Anyway, I like the cover and can't wait until April and June! and then Jun/July Euro tour Not that I can go being on the downside of the planet

I also noticed the symbols on the cover. Especially what looks like an upside down cross. WTF? Probably I'm just reading it the wrong way. Anyway, I'm very, very excited about this book. Can't wait to discover what's behind his mysterious lyrics. And that preface by John Cale! This is going to be a fun read.
