If the drug reference is too present in this one, it may be too much for me. It's presence is already prominent in my life and in a way that I cannot sit back and enjoy music with constant references to it. It is the one thing that makes both the EP and Bubblegum at times almost unpalatable for me. Blues Funeral to me does not have that element to it which is one reason I really enjoy it. I hope that this is not a return to that form.

Damn that sucks he won't be on the new QOTSA record. Good interview as always though--looking forward to reading the book this summer. Also I know I'm in the minority here, but I'm enjoying Beehive WAY more than Nocturne. Both great tunes, but Beehive is just so damn colorful and catchy. He just genuinely sounds like he's having fun and it struck me much the same way Sad Lover did with the strong Trees influence. Lyrically not his strongest song, sure, but it's nice to hear some positive vibes coming from his music over the somewhat predictable gloom and doom.

I'm not sure what song I like the most, but I'm all for Mark having a good time and letting that seep into his music. I think the "doom and gloom", as you aptly put it, is part of his musical language, it's the way he expresses himself and a huge part of his artistic/psychological identity, but he's clearly in a much better position now than he was all those years ago. He might be finally ready to share some of that with us.

LostCause - aside from a vague morphine refrain during Sister, it's almost completely drug-reference free, though maybe Old Swan seems to be extolling the virtues of being clean and happy - it's still sinking in though so I could be wrong! At least on an obvious level anyway, as it's one of his more lyrically-opaque albums.

In fact, scratch that - I think now it might be 'The wolf, he drugged the mandarin" instead of the morphine... in only listening to it in the car at the mo, so concentration is limited Edit: nope, it's morphine. Probably.

So when you will post a review?

When I've written it for the nice people at Echoes & Dust, without whom I wouldn't have a review copy in the first place I've a tiny backlog in place at the mo, hope to have that cleared out in the next day or 3 and I can get cracking on this next. Although it's pretty much going to be an expansion on my 3-word post above

Silence, each day is different. I don't know what I can or cannot listen to at any one time. I don't want really to hear that Honey just gets me stoned. Other than that line (which is obviously repeated) I am really cool with that song. The second line of Gargoyle has a reference as well. It is not like I am soo offended and ultra sensitive, it is the the cumulative effect of everything that makes me not want to hear it. I wish that it was not so.

If it's any help, the main word used in lynchpin song Old Swan (and the last word on the album) is "clean". It's a very upbeat record, and even when he's singing about his demons, he's singing that he's defeated them all except what seems to be the devil himself in the inexplicably jaunty Emperor. But, a lot of Mark's lyrics are clouded in his own imagery as always, so all we can do is read into them however we do, and take comfort or otherwise from our own interpretations. Hope it works out good for you.

Really anxious to hear this Old Swan tune as I understand he sings that one in his upper register. Seems to flex his pipes a bit more these days

I don't know what I can or cannot listen to at any one time. I don't want really to hear that Honey just gets me stoned. If it helps at all, here's my take on this topic. If you listen to his entire catalog, you can hear drug references in basically every song he's contributed to writing, for himself or other projects. And I know he said in an interview somewhere that he always thought he was 'speaking to his own people', as in, those that had those same experiences, so he was surprised that other people found other things in his music. But when I listen to the songs, there are very few of them that I feel like they 'have to be' about drugs at all. You can hear the same words and find a meaning that works for you. When I hear 'honey just gets me stoned', I alternate between thinking relationship, as in a person, 'Honey', my significant other makes me feel great - or even honey as 'the good things of life' - he's dazed by the swirling buzz of life and everything going around in his head, but he sits by the window watching the swarm because the honey, the good things that still exist in the world of confusion, still makes him feel good. I tend to over-think and over-romanticize, I know, but I have always related very emotionally to his music, and I have never touched a drug. To me, none of his songs are about drugs - they CAN be, if I choose to see them that way, but they have other meaning to my particular life. Except Juarez. Can't get around that one! I know your situation is different, but maybe practicing hearing them in a different way will bring you a different level of enjoyment? It doesn't matter what the writer intended, so much as what you get out of it.

I totally get where you all are with this. THANK YOU! I agree with what you say almost all of the time. If it was me that had the issue, I'd be totally ok with all of this. It is my brother and his problems have put him away for what looks to be a good long time. Perhaps I am being way too literal as well as too sensitive. It is just a feeling I get when I'm listening it is not me wanting to purify anything. There is a duality to almost everything. Acknowledge the bad while trying to embrace the good.
I also must admit that I have never been a lyric person who knows 100% of every song that I love. I am a song person who learns lyrics over time and I do not usually think about the lyrics too hard. I guess that is why it is troubling to me. I wish that I could and hopefully I can just let it go (guilt, sensitivity.....).

So...the white vinyl is limited to 400 copies and is the "indie exclusive". The red vinyl variant through Heavenly's website was limited to 500 copies (which was just a pre-order bonus for people that complained to Heavenly to make it happen).

I have to say that "Perky" to describe Emperor is my favourite description so far Although it's also nice to see that G&B agrees with me that it's also Jaunty.
