This doesn't sound like Downwelling to me. Yes, more electronics there but generally I'd say more instruments all together. Pretty eclectic sounding. An important distinction is that the vocals and music are better integrated than with Not Waving; the electronics work better than on much of the MLB stuff too. It's probably because Lanegan himself designed the direction of this record instead of pursuing a collaborative vision. At the same time it employs many elements of his collaborations thus far and, obviously, there are a number of players involved here. Each track has sort of a different sound but on Internal Hourglass, for example, I'd compare it to Thom Yorke solo. Tasteful.
This is really a cool record. I'm impressed...and relieved since the three pre-release tracks left me kinda cold. Might be a milestone. Grateful he survived to reach this point in his oeuvre.
Of course, this is all my very personal opinion. YMMV. But I'm a lifer fan and this record invigorates my enthusiasm.

Good to see the positive reactions and reviews so far. I haven't heard any beyond the three singles thus far, but I am relieved that the production sounds MUCH better than the last two studio albums. Gargoyle and Somebody's Knocking are great records in their own right but the production/overall sound quality of certain songs left much to be desired. The production of the three tracks I've heard on the new LP is fantastic--the sound is very rich and full, but not overproduced in the slightest.

It's very experimental indeed. I like about half of the album and dislike the other half.
One thing I haven't seen mentioned is that "Daylight in the Nocturnal House" is not a brand new song but an extended version of "Bloodline", with different lyrics.

Loads better than Somebody's Knocking, and perhaps his strongest flowing record throughout since Phantom Radio. Love love the Wes Eisold tracks, Dying Rover and for a change is really strong towards the end!

Love love the Wes Eisold tracks, Dying Rover and for a change is really strong towards the end! that's funny, i've listened to it twice in full now. first time through i thought the flow was way off, second time was much better. I'd like to see the credits for each song but i guess i'll have to wait until i get the LP.

I will say this one requires a few listens to really appreciate. Still digesting it but there are some standouts/gems on here. Really in smitten with I Wouldn't Want To Say and This Game of Love at the moment. Mark also sounds phenomenal on this one; really happy to hear much more use of his upper register compared to Somebody's Knocking.

Just got email from Amazon saying they are having difficulty obtaining the item.
Do I cancel and go somewhere else? I would in normal times go to the two big record stores in town to pick up a copy.
Its pretty shit of Amazon when I pre ordered more than a month ago.
