Hope nobody got me wrong, as I detest Bush and what he's done to his country (and others) in the name of freedom - as all he has done is driven a probably immovable wedge between the Western and Islamic cultures and made us all targets of revenge, whilst at the same time ensuring that his mates all profit from it. I guess the problem now is that he has created a mess so potentially disastrous for pretty much anyone who isn't employed by Halliburton (or hasn't been previously, like former Chairman Dick Cheney), that it's going to take the work of an incredibly strong person in order to even acheive some sort of stability, let alone progress. And I'm not sure that Kerry is the man to do it, as instead of take a firm grip of issues, he wavers around them. In all honesty though, I can't think of anyone off the top of my head capable of undoing all that the Bush administration has done in just four years, so I'm all for giving the guy his chance. I just hope that he gets it right

we're about 3 hours ahead. i think.
i'm still so pissed about this election. here is what the 'winning' party ran on:
• more 'coalition of the willing' style shit • pre-emptive strikes on our neighbouring countries • 25% per year more for university degrees • wiping out the free health care system • giving more funds to private grammar schools • refusal to sign the kyoto protocol • refusal to stop logging like mutherfucking beavers • the further selling of telstra (our main telecommunications company)
ie. very conservative, and yet still winning and even gaining support!! the world is fucked.

Sadly, it's the same with any country that has an election in the midst of a military occupation (not sure if we're still allowed to call it a War, although I prefer the term debaclé) - it's rare for the incumbent leader to be ousted while everyone goes for the "you don't change horses while midstream" (George Bush said that so it must be true, although then again it was him who said the War is over) option. Sadly, this also gives rise to the "we can do whatever we bloody want now and they'll lap it up" approach from the people in charge, all in the name of national security and teh war against terror...

Sadly, the 'get behind the leader' syndrome is getting more the norm here (originally it seemed to be a US-only virus). We should just be the 54th State (is that right?) and be done with it. Yah Bush!

More amusing election-o-tales:
I'll get a link to this when I get home, but apparently some - suuposedly neutral - lobby group getting people to register to vote have been found to be asking applicants who they were planning on voting for, and then destroying the applications of those who said they were goingto vote Democrat. This, on top of the Gerrymandering going on in Texas (illegal in most countries but apparently perfectly OK in the States) doesn't paint a very pretty picture of the electoral process over there...
