Ok, just a quick post to let people know the shows are actually happening despite the lack of posts on this board... The gig last night was great, you could hear the band has grown together musically and I think it was way better than the Köln gig last August. But did I sense some tension between Mark and the band there? Not sure. And why the heck did he let Shelly sing Strange Religion all on her own as the encore? It was like throwing her to the wolves. By all means, her voice is average and she hasn't got a great range, and thus it became obvious. The snickering and comments I heard around me... "Shut up, dear!" was one of the nicer ones. I'll write a more elaborate review for onewhiskey. Not much new on the playlist, but I was delighted he played an old favourite, Gospel Plow, it really rocked. Oh, and did someone see what Mark was doing just before Resurrection Song with the back to our side? It seemed to take ages and he emerged with a freshly lit cig. Does he roll them himself or something?

It was like throwing her to the wolves. with the Trees, Mark would often disappear for the encore and leave Van C and Barrett to do the vocals... maybe his voice is a bit tired from all this constant touring - which might also account for the addition of the instrumental (blues for d) to the setlist... personally, i like what ive heard of shelley's voice. i can name plenty of singers (male/female, lead/b.vox) who are noticeably MUCH worse...

First of all, in my opinion, her voice is NOT average and she DOES sing very well. Second, Shelley sang "Strange Religion" also in Stockholm and I heard she'd done it a couple of times before that too.
This is a matter of opinion and open to discussion, but I honestly think Mark made a very good choice when she hired Shelley for his band. Besides singing well she seems to know her place in the band - she doesn't try to oversing Mark but stays in the background. That is exactly why I think that letting Shelley sing a song all by herself is just great.
I mean hey, it's Mark Lanegan BAND, for crying out loud! That's what bands do - they do things together and it's just cool that they change what they do from time to time. Shelley singing one song all alone doesn't in any way do harm for their performance. On the contrary, in my opinion, it just gives a nice new touch to the whole experience.
I've seen four shows during this tour and at least I was very happy they'd come up with a new creative idea. It made my concert experience a hell of a lot better, not worse in Stockholm. But that's just me. And as you said, they seem to have grown together musically. They are much more coherent now than they were a few months back when I last saw them. The fact that Shelley sings a song without Mark is an element of that coherence and it is in no way a negative thing.

And she's very foxy. Very foxy indeed. No Hope Sandoval but still foxy.

The snickering and comments I heard around me... "Shut up, dear!" was one of the nicer ones. people who do this should have their larynx removed immediately. there should be a larynx-remover guy at gigs, with a blunt rusty scalpel, patiently waiting for someone to do this.

I knew that comment about Shelly was gonna cause some discussion, but really guys, do you actually listen sometimes? I know, I know, when guys see a "foxy" girl on stage they tend to become not very objective and another part of their body than the brain takes over. But believe me, as an objective listener (not drunk, not deaf, not blinded by the sexy looks) this was no performance fit for a stage. BTW, my male companion agreed about that vehemently, his words were even more drastic. Her voice is too thin, she wavers at the higher notes, is out of tune sometimes... Hell, I can sing better, and I have no ambitions to sing on stage!
As for Mark not hiring a bad singer - even he can make a mistake. Maybe he was blinded by her sexy looks too. But this theory about him saving his voice could make some sense.

yeah, you're absolutely right; we're just walking erections, there's no way anyone could make an objective judgement on the matter.

Let's not get into this male/female bullshit.
I don't think Shelley would sing a single note all alone on the stage if it wasn't approved by Mark. He's the leader of his own band and I have a hard time seeing why he'd let Shelley sing in the first place if he ever thought she was a bad singer. It's probably not like she put a gun into his face and forced Mark to let her sing the silly song.

Finally someone with a brain here. Of course Shelley is approved by the man himself he wouldn't give her this song if he didn't think it makes sense. Just think about the lyrics again and maybe you get it? I actually thought she was great that night! Each and every bandmember was at their best at that night and they made me send in my first review to onewhiskey ever. Sorry for everone here who missed that one. They can't get any better...maybe

Each and every bandmember was at their best at that night and they made me send in my first review to onewhiskey ever. JulieP, I don't have it. I have yours, Dag, and hopefully will get it on there today, but I don't see any other reviews from that show. Please guys, keep sending them in, but do make sure your subject line has a relevant subject! If it says REVIEW, LYRICS, TOUR, SHOW, LANEGAN - anything like that, it will catch my eye. If it has no subject or something like HI, HEY, WEBSITE, DUDE - it will end up in the pile of crap mail! I end up deleting 100 emails a day because my addy is posted all over the net and I get a lot of garbage, so please make sure your review stands out - I don't want to miss any!

Hi Raeni, just mailed it again - and here it is as well
Not my first time this year to see the Mark Lanegan Band but this was most definitely the best show they did - maybe even the best show I saw in my lifetime and I saw a few... ! So I thought I have to share this with you... They started almost in time and kicked off with Sideways in Reverse. Accidentally there had been a bit of light on the stage for that first song, but Mark went back to his stage manager and next thing that happened was they turned the lights down...Then over to a different, darker mood with Number Isn’t Up and then Hit the City... Compared to the August shows they had changed the set slightly and came up with a few real surprises (for people like me who haven’t read this review section for about a week): Screaming Trees’ Gospel Plow was very good and went down so well (from all the ST songs I can think about this was the most unexpected for me personally but when thinking about it, maybe the most obvious?) and Shelley doing Strange Religion on her own was simply cute (Mark watching her from the side of the stage having another cigarette). There was talk bout the band being really upset about the elections in the US. I guess their frustration about 4 more Bush years turned them into real maniacs when goin going on stage and made them really rock the house, guitar solos were coming through the mix like knifes, beats were pushing each and every song forward, they were awesome and tight. Mark must have given himself an extra treat somehow as his voice never sounded better. I just hoped that someone recorded that gig whilst I had tears in my eyes for Resurrection Song and shivers down my spine when I’ll Take Care of You came up. Of course there was no „entertainment“ and there was no speech, but who expects that here? I find it hard to describe as even my mother language does not have many words to say „mindblowing“...but for those of you who have ears to hear, you’ll find out yourself
