I was at the dublin gig last night and it was great, Nicks set was cool really relaxed and friendly mark came on to sing Four Corners and left auto plot for his set. Marks set had lot of stuff from bubble gum like meth blues, wedding dress, when your number isnt up, the two singles and pretty much the same as other dates. I'll take care of you, no easy action, one way street, resurrection song and field song was played and fix at the end was amazing (really trippy). the coolest thing was i got to meet mark outside the venue (cos i was there four hours before the gig started and saw him about three times before i gathered up the guts to approach him), he signed my ticket and my bubblegum cover in shiny silver pen, he was really friendly and all on his lonesome....i was right infront of mark the whole night and caught a drumstick at the end...i'm pissed tho cos i had a camera to take pics of the gig but when i met mark i was so flustered that i didn't think of getting my pic with him. Getting the photos developed and i think i'll send them to the site if they want 'em.

Sounds like a good night I'm really looking forward to Saturday now - not only for the gig, but I've just put on an old pair of trousers this morning that I hadn't worn in 6 months and found 30 quid in the pocket, so I can now not only get drunk but can also afford to get home without having to walk BTW - I'll have a go at posting a setlist when I get back, but my powers of remembering song titles is not an exact science. Expect loads of "that one that goes..." on there

Ah, siner, I'm jealous! In a good way. You sound like you had a fabulous time and that the show couldn't have been better. I'm impressed with Nick being able to pull the songs off. He didn't have much time to learn them and so far everyone is saying he's doing an amazing job. I really liked his performance when I saw him in Seattle last month. He's a good singer too.

Ooh you lucky thing, I have to wait till Saturday now. Fortunately though, I only have 24 hours after that before I see them again in Leeds, so that's alright then.

Yeah I was there too and was blown away. Nick O's set was more impressive than i expected - I'm Gonna Leave (that qotsa song anyway) with him and norm block was something else.
Lanegan threw out Gospel Plow near the end, one way street was really good and Sweet Willy John was fucking brilliant...made me want to grab my partner by the hand and crack open the moonshine!
Shelly sang Strange Religion really well on her own (does she just kind of stand there for some songs though?) and that topped off a great gig.

I was at the show the other night too, but (and this probably won't make me popular) I can't get on with her voice. i also thought the stomping off stage was a bit much - a bit soon for her to be acting the diva. they'll be calling themselves the shelly brien band before you know it. other than that it was a good night.

Hey, we are all entitled to an opinion. Sometimes people don't want to speak up here for fear of ruffling feathers. Anyway, I have been reading, more times than not, that Shelley's voice is average at best. Now, I haven't heard her sing so I can't really have an opinion on the matter but it seems like most people don't think too highly of her singing. I also can't believe she walked off stage mid song. I haven't heard of many backup singers doing that.

......I can't really tell you what she sounds like, the sound was a bit shit the time I saw them, I was aware she was on stage but she only sings on a handful of songs, most of them from Bubblegum, what would you like her to do when her services aren't required, get down on her knees & worship?

I think the issue is (as far as I've read) she stormed off stage mid-song and Mark ran after her.
Most musicians, unless they are a guest on one song or so, stay on stage. If a drummer or a bass player only plays for half a song, they don't run off stage.

It's not really much of an issue at all. At the Birmingham gig, she was onstage for the songs she sang, and not there when she wasn't singing. Given that No Easy Action is one of the songs where she hasn't been singing on of late, her leaving the stage at that point isn't much of a biggie.
And, people should also take into account that she wasn't at Bristol at all (with the previous gig cancelled due to a band member's ill health), barely participated at Birmingham and has only just started to sing Strange Religion again - rather than just think "ooh, what a stroppy mare", wouldn't it be just as (if not more) reasonable to think that she might be a bit ill at the moment? It'd also explain Mark's reaction to her departure as well, as he could have been concerned. Then again, the amount of anti-Shelley sentiments that have been flying round these boards for a while now would mean that such a logical and non-consensus thought wouldn't cross most peoples' minds...

We don't know why Shelley left the stage. If Mark went after her he was obviously concerned about her. Why are you all so mean about her?

I remember back in '73 we were playing a gig in Atlanta and one of my back-up singers ran off stage. We were all kinds of angry at her until we realized that she had some "intestinal problems"....hey, it happens to the best of us.

I think the issue is (as far as I've read) she stormed off stage mid-song and Mark ran after her. .........she does how many dates, stands up in front of what sounds like was often apathetic crowds & she has to leave the stage abruptly during one concert & she's a diva? People have gone from who's that chick? Wondering who she is in the first place to what often borders on downright hostility when she's mentioned.
