Well i've readwhat other people thought about these gigs, and i thought they were both great. The set list was as mentioned by someone else in a previous post. I think what long time fans object to is the loss of intimacy at the gigs, but that's what happens when the man gets popular again. The band as a whole, and especially the guitarist Michael Brannigan are superb. They are obviously used to rockin' out, but restrain themselves very well. Brannigan is very, very talented. Shelley the backing singer was ok, but you could only hear her on a few songs, but she was in tune
As for Mark himself, he seems to have so much more energy than on the last tour, and they really bang through the songs without much pause inbetween. His voice sounded great to me, he douesn't quite all the notes, but he never did, and that's part of the whole thing, that live feeling! Mark obviously appreciated that Islington was full, and apologised for coming out on stage late (way gone 10), but he did this at MK as well. They seem to have only one tech, who got some jip from the crowd, but he just smiled. They had much more of a 'band' feel, rather than an ensemble like last time, and, given a bit of time, i think will become the benchmark by whom others are judged

They had much more of a 'band' feel, rather than an ensemble like last time, and, given a bit of time, i think will become the benchmark by whom others are judged i think i agree with some of what you said, but disagree with other parts... i dont think mark is any more up for it than on the last tour - the last tour was the most confident and relaxed i have ever seen him. and he is just the same as that now. he swaggers a bit more than he used to, and turns away to drink water, click his fingers etc - he used to stand dead still, hanging onto that microphone for dear life... with his eyes constantly closed. anyway... islington - they came on at about 9.40 - not 'way gone 10' - cos the venue's curfew was 11pm. i checked my watch when they came on. at MK they came on at about 10.25 and played til 11.40ish... also, speaking to others, I think that the thing 'long-time' fans objected to is/was the poor sound/performance at MK. it just wasnt very good. for whatever reasons. nothin to do with a lack of intimacy - i like seeing lots of people at his gigs, even if they do piss me (and Mr.Lanegan) off when they request Hanging Tree and 'Trees songs... i like seeing him play for a big crowd. in london the band WERE great. absolutely. but in MK they just didnt seem to get it together. Willie John was musically a bit dodgy in MK, the rhythm never settled, but it was superb in London. Take Care was too loud (guitar-wise) and flabby in MK, but tighter and more controlled in London. those are two of the best examples i can think of. i think it was just the sound and the venue. let's face it, the day before they played MK (a place that none of the band had probably even heard of) they had sold around 200 tickets and had around 250 left... and there were people shouting for songs that mark didnt want to play. plus, he was basically playing in a hall in a leisure centre. what is that place all about? in london, he'd sold out a fairly prestigious venue weeks in advance... which one are you gonna put on the best show for? which one are your band and the sound/lighting crew gonna be most harshly judged on...? i also thought the previous band was slightly better. brett is great, we all know that. simple and effective. and i like the addition of a female vocalist as well. but on the last tour we had the superb acoustic section, and i personally prefer troy to michael. i think troy would've been in the band if he wasn't working on the new QOTSA album... im quibbling. what im basically saying is - i truly loved the islington show, but i was genuinely not that impressed with MK. maybe im being more harsh about it than is necessary in order to counter the rave reviews it has on onewhiskey... you know what an awkward, argumentative bastard i am. it's all good.

...I was at the Islington show as well and I absolutely loved it, I danced a hell of a lot more then I did at his last London show.........I took my younger brother with me, he says he found his God........
....what was really weird was all the people about looking for tickets........

I got my tickets from someone on the .com board. Kate if yer reading this you're a life saver!
Yeah there were so many people trying to get tickets. Saw one scary looking tout person with a scoured eye accompanied by his friend on crutches-they were a strange pair.
Ohh it was soo good. Ma-an has he got one sexy voice. So gravely so great. And I had the best fuckin' view.
Had a fab time. I was a bit apprehensive to what the fans would be like, but all the people I met were really nice.
The roadie people were so wanky though, apparantly they're not allowed to give out the setlists....since when has that law been enforced! Even after repeated begging they didnt give in, but as soon as I turned around after being shoo'd by the security man one of the roadies chucks a drumstick to a guy.....grrr!
Does anyone have any decent pictures of that night?I took a few on my mobile but the quality is shite. You may remember me..asian girl down the front...well im one of a very few that were there, minority shall we say. Was there with my sister.
I too have found my god and I shall follow him religiously.

...how utterly wankerish! I was in the gallery, I counted at least 3 setlists, if not five and other bits of paper flying around the stage, they couldn't give up one? What did they think was going to happen it was going to wind up on eBay? I can see the ad now:
..."this is the setlist the hairy guy with the earrings sweated all over, I'll pay you to take it off my hands"......ha, ha, ha!
Maybe they'd already promised them to someone else, I saw Norm come out as we were leaving and chuck his drumsticks to someone on the floor......
....I'm developing a serious thing for the hairy guy with the earrings, which is strange because I don't do facial hair, it brings me up in a rash..........
The Islington show was really good actually, it was great to hear some real enthsism from the audience......I don't know what your experience of London audiences is but in some of the bigger venues, they can be absolutely fucking awful.......

Was it 9 40, we'd only arrived at just before 9 'cause we got stuck going through oxford, and i was on my 4th pint by the time they came on, so it seemed a lot later. at MK they came on at about 10.25 and played til 11.40ish... Mondo Generator were really late on at MK as well, maybe the management try to make people to stay later, and drink more! also, speaking to others, I think that the thing 'long-time' fans objected to is/was the poor sound/performance at MK. it just wasnt very good. for whatever reasons. nothin to do with a lack of intimacy - i like seeing lots of people at his gigs, even if they do piss me (and Mr.Lanegan) off when they request Hanging Tree and 'Trees songs... i like seeing him play for a big crowd. Maybe i was drunk (which i was), and maybe i was just really excited to see and hear the band perform all the new songs, but i thought the sound was great, and was glad to be able to get close to the stage (unlike at Islington). The band were not quite 'as together' at MK, but then they'll be getting better with every gig. Believe it or not, but that was packed compared to Mondo in london the band WERE great. absolutely. but in MK they just didnt seem to get it together. Willie John was musically a bit dodgy in MK, the rhythm never settled, but it was superb in London. Take Care was too loud (guitar-wise) and flabby in MK, but tighter and more controlled in London. those are two of the best examples i can think of. Awesome at islington is what i say! i think it was just the sound and the venue. let's face it, the day before they played MK (a place that none of the band had probably even heard of) they had sold around 200 tickets and had around 250 left... and there were people shouting for songs that mark didnt want to play. plus, he was basically playing in a hall in a leisure centre. what is that place all about? Yeah MK was weird, a bit like Newport Centre what with the sporty people going in and out, but back in Cheltenham we've got no where for gigs anymore so i think the locals there are lucky to have that It would be ideal for intimate acoustic gigs though (hmmm, there's an idea)! in london, he'd sold out a fairly prestigious venue weeks in advance... Which is ace, considering how long Mark and us fans have trying to spread the gospel. I think the big difference is all the press coverage he's got for Bubblegum. Mind you half the crowd at the back weren't even listening, just Londoners out to the next 'big thing' to say i was there. Wankers, they should have left their tickets for real fans. " tossers behind me were chatinng about shit so much i had to turn round and turn into 'Mr Sarcastic' to shut 'em up which one are you gonna put on the best show for? which one are your band and the sound/lighting crew gonna be most harshly judged on...? i also thought the previous band was slightly better. brett is great, we all know that. simple and effective. and i like the addition of a female vocalist as well. but on the last tour we had the superb acoustic section, and i personally prefer troy to michael. i think troy would've been in the band if he wasn't working on the new QOTSA album... I liked 'em both but they were different, Mark has gone slightly more 'rock' so the band has adjusted I think Troy is brilliant, and really wanted to see his 'Enemy' project supporting again, maybe next time. But i think the fact that he's full time Queens means that he was/could never be part of a real band, which is what ,hopefully, Mark is trying to build. Michael is a very different sort of player, bringing something completley new to the band, and ,hopefully, he's in it for the duration. I thought that the guitarists seamed together effrotlessly, and had real difficulty telling who was doing what on each song, which i think is good . you know what an awkward, argumentative bastard i am. It's the only way to be! it's all good.

...ummmmmmmm Troy..........but that's another conversation..........
..........I would literally sit down in the middle of a crowd and watch that man play, he's absolutely superb....I think it'll be interesting to see what he produces with QOTSA.......
...I would have loved to have seen the band jam a bit more, not to detract from Mark's performance but I was really getting into it when they stopped.........

London audiences?? They can be bludy awful. I was suprised at the size of the venue, I really thought it was going to be bigger. But I guess intimate venues are nice. Its so funny ive been playing a load of marks stuff around the house and my mum has quite taken to wedding dress! She loves it, she thinks he sounds so manly! Know of any pictures I can get of that night? Wed 1st Sept at Islington?

..."this is the setlist the hairy guy with the earrings sweated all over, I'll pay you to take it off my hands"......ha, ha, ha! whahahaaa that is sooo true at pukkelpop they handed a few out which were dry as far as I could see. and then this dude asked me if I wanted half of a setlist that was taped to the stage near Michael. It was soaking wet! might have something to do with numerous spitfountains.. btw some weird dude got his hands on the bottle of water from which Mark was drinking. Don't.. want.. to... know..
