On his twitter account earlier twitter.com/zanelowe"So, one afternoon, during my tenure at XFM, I sat down to interview Josh Homme and Mark Lanegan from QOTSA... Interview went well after which they recorded two note perfect acoustic versions of No One Knows and Hanging Tree. It was a good day... Now, bearing in mind this was pre smoking ban, a small concession was made and the boys immediately lit up a couple of death sticks in doors Josh was standing just outside the sound proof vocal booth while Lanegan remained seated inside where he had been pretty much the whole time During the course of this cigarette break, predictably, a fire alarm was activated... After some initial laughter, we were told this would have to be resolved immediately or XFM and, in fact, the Capital group would go off air Cigarettes would have to be extinguished and partial evacuation would be required. At the very least from the impromptu smoking area... Comprehending the potential seriousness of this situation, we all turned towards the exit. All except one man... Sat stock still, in the same place he had been the whole time, was Death Rattle aka The Lanegrain aka Mark Lanegan... Even Josh had, at this point conformed to Capital Radio fire alarm policy, "Hey Mark, we have to split so they can sort out this fire alarm" Death Rattle, still smoking, sat stock still, looked up at us like we didn't have a set of nuts between us, and said, "I choose to die"."

I love that story. I remember he told it on a late-night tv show when he had Josh and Joey from QOTSA on as guests.

Great story....for what its worth both Lanegan and Dulli no longer smoke anymore... Really? Where did you read/see this at? I thought Lanegan was still smoking. Good news if this is true, even though I have no room to talk.

Dude, you should totally be a member at Scott Ford Radio. You'll get all the good dish, like when the whole Gutter Twins band stops smoking, or when Mark shows unruly fans medieval justice

We have mutual friends...once or twice a year I find myself being at the same place as Lanegan and/or Dulli. Everywhere here in LA is "smoke free" so when me and my friend step outside to have a smoke we bump into Mark or Greg...I spend my night outside smoking it seems, so I usually will at some point run into one of 'em, but the last couple of times ive noticed that Mark and Greg have been absent in the "smoking section" I asked my one friend who knows them very well about it, and he told me both have stopped for awhile now...like I said for whatever its worth.

As per various myspaces/blogs last June, the Gutter Twins touring band quit smoking around the time of the 2nd EU tour (there was a lot of gum lined up on the top of amps!). There's also a comment floating around somewhere from J Homme about hearing Lonely Light, which is the first smoke-free Lanegan song that he heard.

Thanks for the responses. I do remember seeing the myspace blogs and such back earlier this summer, but for some reason I didn't think Mark stuck with it - at first, I even thought it was bullshit....Mark not smoking?! Come On! That's excellent to hear; I hope they can all keep it up and that I can do the same.

Most venues are smoke-fee, so they were probably finding it hard to make it through entire shows before they quit...
