Aroldis Chapman hit 106mph on the radar gun monday against the mighty Pirates this week, 10 of his 13 fastballs broke 100 mph

Mongo and I tried a few years ago to have a sports thread. I think it went down like a lead balloon because Americans play a whole heap of bastardised versions of proper internationally recognised sports and the rest of the world don't care about these random sports that you are the only participants in. When you top it off by mocking/abusing sports that are popular throughout the rest of the world (which is bigger than the USA, apparently), it annoys people. The sense of entitlement and the belief that your sports are 'proper' and anyone else's are stupid consistently limits participation in this thread. So, shall we discuss: - The 'World'(/National?) Series (of simplified cricket/rounders)? - The National Rugby-with-helmets-and-padding-and-lots-of-stopping-and-starting League? - I can't think of a basketball one, sorry. Looks like fun actually, and there are even some people who play it in different countries. Mainly girls, I think. - Ice Hockey? That looks like fun... and, again, there are even other countries that take it seriously as a sport now, so... err. Yeah. - Maybe we could try 'soccer'? Generally known throughout the world as 'football', 'the world's game', or 'the beautiful game'. The most popular sport in the world. Unfortunately, other countries participate in it, so the US aren't the best at it. We'll brush over this one. The US league is providing great refuge for European and South American players who are past it or not good enough to make it anywhere else. So that's a good example of the US doing something positive with international relations... I love you guys really. It's not your fault you are brought up with such insular views and taught that your country's sports are 'the proper ones', while not having the openness to look at things from an outsider's perspective. I mean, if you'd grown up in the middle east, with a different skin colour, you'd almost certainly be Muslims with a completely different belief system. :-)

Thanks for bringing the joy to our sports thread, Marc. I say we keep it going regardless of our bastardization and insular mentalities, damn it. ;D

I always use the voice of Winston Churchill when I read Marcs posts Hehe. So, anyway... Spanish Cup Final last night. Real Madrid won it. On their winners' parade through the streets in the open-top bus, one of the players dropped the cup over the front of the bus... and it was crushed under the front wheel. www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXxSuzRpTps(9sec to 16sec). It's quite painful to watch.

It's quite painful to watch. Not as painful as reading a patronising and racist post that is trying unsuccessfully to disguise itself as humour by adding a few smiley faces.

Isn't a human being part of the same race as another human being? It's called 'the human race', isn't it? Anyway, the point you're missing is - when does prejudice become 'using past experience of particular people and scenarios in order to make reasonable judgements on their behaviour patterns'? For reference, here are some quotes from US members of this forum on the original 'SPORTZ' thread: and i dont want to hear anything about "footy", that is the gayest nickname for a sport ever. call it football or soccer god damn it. I listen to sports radio while commuting to and from work and they announced the tied score, the shootout and the winner over the course of my hour of driving, granted they were not broadcasting the game, but they would break in and announce things as they happened.....which was a tad annoying to me I hear Chelsea Clinton won? or does she play for one of the f00tsy teams? Ah well glad to see beckham win again ;D question for the Americans.. how does a 'draft' work? i dont understand the concept of it, as we dont have anything like that in non-US sport. explain.. well I dont know if this is soccer related (i have no idea how soccer works) , but for REAL sports its where.... etc Thanks for your input.

It's not your fault, you were taught that your countries sports are 'proper', just because they're played by most of the world. Also, Cricket is just as weird as baseball! And hockey is fun! It's fun as shit, try it sometime.

I am not posting this link to spark controversy or start a debate, but rather to point out that all of these sports require incredible dedication, effort, and talent. I think reading the opinions about which has the greatest athletes is interesting because they all have valid points. To not consider hockey a serious sport is unfathomable to me because I was born in rural New York on a lake and played on informal teams for a good chunk of my childhood. Just successfully manuevering while skating requires an enormous amount of practice and skill. I would never diss soccer (or football), lacrosse, cricket, or rugby because I have never played them. That said, I believe we can all discuss any sport we choose to in this thread while maintaining reciprocal respect for each other. bleacherreport.com/articles/31008-open-mic-which-sport-has-the-greatest-athletes

I am Canadian & we do take hockey seriously. I don't thing that 'You' (great screen name btw) really understands the dedication & coordination & skill that is involved with the game. It is not easy by any means. My personal belief is that you shouldn't be dissin' a sport (or anything for that matter) if you, a) have never played it. b) don't understand how it is played. Hockey is a rough sport but it is not all about hitting & fighting. That is just a small part of the game. It is a finesse game & if you can't see that, then there is no point in me continuing. Sorry for my rant but like I said up there ^ we do take hockey seriously....it's part of our DNA. Boom www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFkBXY95_kk
