the light pink flowers make an I, the dark pink flowers make a C.... And if you play it backwards you can hear Franciscan monks chanting passages from Emily Dickinson's Collected Works.

If that's it, it is a bit subversive, like the Bubblegum title. It's a funny contrast to the title. I like to see his sense of humor because it doesn't come out much in the songs.

I think quite a few of his songs are really funny. Wedding Dress is hilarious. I find most of his songs have a fairly wry twist. It's why I think, overall, they have a positive effect on me. It has a positive effect on me too, when maybe it shouldn't. One thing I like about his music, and I may be alone in my opinion, is that it's so dark and sinister because of his voice that it almost pushes it into melodrama. It makes what should be depressing music sometimes fun, because it's just so over the top and dramatic. The lyrics of "I'll Take Care of You" could be sung straightforwardly by a boy band, and the song would lose all the subversiveness and weight and drama that Mark gives it. Quite frankly that song just sounds evil coming out of Mark, which makes it fun. Maybe it's just me, but he almost sounds like the devil preying on someone weak on that song. Also, it never comes off like he's whining or complaining, when if it was someone else singing the same lyrics, I think it would, and it wouldn't be nearly as fun to listen to. Outside of Woe and Juarez I don't see a lot of humor though.

Outside of Woe and Juarez I don't see a lot of humor though. You're spot on with that analysis. I've seen similar comments in professional reviews, Alexis Petridis in the Guardian said much of what you've just said about Bubblegum and how it could have veered into my bumperbook of junkie cliches but it's completely redeemed by the sense of self awareness and the utter lack of self pity.

The cover art left me kinda cold... I'm not sure I like it. I would've been happier if it had more of a painting-like look... I'm perfectly OK with flowery cover art. It can have several symbolical layers of meaning. Also, the title sounds kinda predictable per sè, but maybe Mark meant it to signify "the death of blues"? The death of the old, folk-country-blues-with-some-distortion-now-and-then Mark? Or maybe the end of sadness, his version of a "happy" record?

If that's his intention behind the title, then perhaps the cover is him poking fun at himself for making a record with a much lighter, maybe "flowery" mood. I'd like to believe he's trying to alienate or challenge his "broodier" fans. Also, I looked up the "Gravedigger" single artwork with google images and it also directs one to that Russian textile book

There's nothing light or flowery about The Gravedigger's Song.

I'm sort of getting the imagery a bit - the flowers in the region depicted by that book are beautiful things growing out of some of the most tough, unforgiving landscapes on the planet. Gravedigger's Song (and the newly-beefed Burning Jacob's ladder) certainly fits that bill.

Just started watching Absolutely Fabulous 20th Anniversary Special, and the opening scene is of Edina in bed with a familiar looking bedspread/doona cover on..... Unfortunately I can't find a YouTube clip of it, but for those in Australia it's on iView www.abc.net.au/iview/#/view/890483How I'd love to sleep under a Blues Funeral.

I wasn't really sure I liked the cover art at first, now I think it's just great. I've become a fan of textile patterns too LOL

On one of the million interviews and reviews for Blues Funeral I recall Mark saying the art work was chosen by Greg Dulli at Mark's request.
Bey, I want that doona cover!
