At this moment I have only heard 3 songs but wow. Unbelievable. When it's in you is just something else. I love how this song was transformed. Both versions are amazing. When it's in you has such a great trippy quality to it.

I have the 'deadslowrocknroll' shirt too... It was from the Field Songs tour, winter 2001. Although mine is now my 'painting & decorating' shirt. :-)

This album is great vintage Mark. I'm so glad he released it. The early 2000s era Mark is my favorite stuff, maybe because that is when I started listening. Has anyone been able to figure out if this has all of the Cook County songs? There were snippets on YouTube of all of them. I recall that dead slow rock n roll shirt, that was my reaction too. It just had his name and said "dead slow rock n roll" underneath. I also remember one from that time saying "see that my grave is kept clean" which I thought was weird until I later found out it was from a Leadbelly song. I NEED THOSE TSHIRTS:) Well I am PRAGMATIC - i mean on some ways otherwise im very artistic - but when it comes to ART That's OBVIOUS : Wanna SEE these shirts! Come on peeps

See that my grave is kept clean - much older than Leadbelly - Blind Lemon Jefferson. Thoroughly recommended listening (along with Blind Willie Johnson, Blind Willie McTell etc). I think it's on Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music (which is not what it sounds like and is a fantastic collection of music from the 1920's, before it was corrupted by radio, tv etc!)

I agree with you Wheels! It is great in it's current form. Randall, it has such a great feel. I still need to listen to it at normal volume???
I am wondering what some of the other oldtimers (people that frequented the old and long gone boards), think of this album. I'd love to hear from them about this album. I hope they are still at worst lurkers here.

Mark emphatically does not want that version released...so I can promise you that it won't Best R The fact that you respect Mark's wishes not to release it is something that is to be commended. By the way, despite being "demo" recordings, I think the production really suits the music really well. One last thing, obviously Mark has worked with Mike Johnson and Keni Richards before on albums, but how did the other guys become involved with this album? They all seem to add something different to the music compared to the earlier albums, in particular Ian Moore with his guitar and sitar parts?

Yes, Mike worked with us on Twisted Willie whe we did " She's Not For You" and Keni and Mark have worked together. Ian, Micky, Bukka and Steve have all worked with me on other productions. I brought them in because of their uniqueness of ideas, versatility and their intense respect for Mark. Also, they are always a great hang. Best R

Wasn't sure what to expect from this - "demo" makes me think of just an acoustic guitar and some vocals, nothing else - but played it yesterday and was really impressed. Full band and everything, if this was a "new" ML album I'd be happy with it. It's a dark, brooding selection of dreamy soundscapes - typical Lanegan then! Seriously, the production and musicianship is beautiful.
"When It's In You" is ridiculously good - yes, the template for Meth... is there, but it's but the music & imagery (scarecrows etc) has a more "otherworldly" feel to it. Very trippy, as has already been said.
"No Cross" and "High Life" are two other highlights for me so far. The whole album flows nicely and you'd never really think these songs were demos.
As I tweeted last night, many artists would kill to be able to put out such a set as a finished album. Big well done to all concerned.

Ok here is a bit of context. When Mark arrived in Houston, these song ideas we scraps of paper and snippets on a barely audible cassette. What you hear was the organic transformation of these amazing ideas that could only come from Mark into a landscape . It was truly like a collection of genius artists painting separately but synergistically muriel in Marks wake. I know that probably sounds a bit lofty but I want you to understand that this was work of the first impressions that everyone felt from hearing Mark's songs. I hope you get the sense of what I mean. Best R
