The best answer I can give to cult leaders questions is Mark and Mark. I come from a place where its the artists' art and so it's the artists' choice.

I remember hearing something about a gift horse... Hah, i didn't mean for it to come off that way. Just curious about the thinking process of the artist.

Remember, original intention for the sessions we to record master quality demos for songs that Mark had published with Justice Music and not for a record company. Because I wanted the recordings to be marketable for potential film and TV placement, I spent produced the songs more in depth than is the demos were only being archived ( which is what ended up happening ). The production and " colors " that I ended up using were, in my opinion at the time, a natural progression from where Mark was post Field Songs, Only Mark know why he felt that this was the right time to release them as an album. I can't speak for him. Sometimes time and distance grants perspective that shapes choices. I do know that because he, Greg Werkman and Mike Patten ( owners of Ipecac, and I have been friends a long time; Mark trusted that no one was going to try to manipulate the public into thinking this is a release of new material from him. Hope that helps.

I think it is really a question of "why release it now" vs. "why not release it then"? I think the answer is fairly obvious for the "why not release it then" question (or maybe "why not finish it?"). At the time, in that same year Mark had contributed to Queens of the Stone Age and released Songs For The Deaf. The record was an international hit and Mark started touring that project around the world for a good year or so. I'm guessing at some point there was a question of whether to hit the studio and finish off a new solo record or support the QOTSA project. To Qotsa or not to Qotsa, that is the question! After a year or so, he was engrained with the QOTSA team and started forming Bubblegum, which we all know was a very decisive and creative departure from what he had previously released, probably due to the musicians around him.
As for "why now"?...I have no idea, but I'm F'N happy these songs are released, because these songs are absolutely stunning! I get that these were intended to be "demos", but they certainly don't feel like it at all. These recording bridge a gap musically between very diverse projects and I think it lends to Mark's brilliance as an artist.
Anyone agree or am I just a big old dumb ass?

We could further theorize that the release now had something to do with the Has God Seen My Shadow anthology, which two of these tracks appear on. Mayhap that led to Mark dusting off the whole project and reconsidering releasing it as worthwhile. Bah, it's all conjecture. I, too, am both very happy for its release and for Randall's sharing.

I'm also happy that these songs were released. It's pretty much the only album I've listened to since it came out. And thanks to Randall as well. It's a beautifully produced album.

I will address the " why not then" question, again. This was not nor was it ever until early this year, intended to be a release. Therefore, there was not an issue of finishing anything because we had done all that we intended to do and more. When Mark left the studio, we had recorded the basic track...drums bass rhythm gtrs and vocals. Over the next few days I brought in friends to give the songs more color. But when Mark left, he had done what he came to do and was happy. So, the question of "why not then" is mute really because that wasn't our purpose. As far as 'why now" I think the simplest answer is because Mark decided he wanted them out. As a side note, I believe the "why" of someone's other than our own motives is a slippery slope. I try not to pretend I can know that.

Thank you randall for sharing some of the intel on the process, this is highly appreciated!
At first, i listened to the album intellectually "so that is before weird chill", "interesting how meth blues progressed" etc. than i forgot about all that and really started to listen.
"Nothing Much To Mention" stood out for me because i had watched Cook County and the lines "should i dance around the room just like a child... no long goodbyes" immediately stuck with me. I was so happy to finally have that song! "When It's In You" got my attention as well for being the more innocent sister of "Meth Blues", nice mellow vibe.
Then "No Cross To Carry", what a sweet, short rock song. Between my husband and I, one of us would start singing "run go get the priest!" at some point throughout the day (only that "coat and go" thing makes me cringe a little, just like "oool grey ooovercoat", haha).
"Halcyon Daze" and "Grey Goes Black" already have a warm place in my heart from the anthology.
But where I really got it was when I got into "The Primitives" and "Blind". "Two Horses" followed immediatly. Such amazing songs! I can't believe how someone can come into a session with not one or two, but so many great songs...
Bottomline: This album is like a friend holding my hand at the moment, not least because of its soothing and mellow sound and pleasant but creative arrangements.

Which song on this album has the lyric "Forget your yesterdays, son"? I read that in a review and I haven't figured out where it comes from, and I have not been able to fully concentrate on listening in depth as of yet.

Like I said before, that song was my gateway to the whole album, mainly because of the imho outstanding lyrics. The Primitives (corrections welcome) Forget your family, son Your face on the clock Your foreign body The ship is just a frame Pinpoint eyes see them decks in pain You wonder how it should be You wonder how it should go Can't deny no lonesome thing Hands, beyond hands, beyond oblivion swing Forget your yesterdays, son Your face on the clock Your foreign body The ship is just a frame Pinpoint eyes see them decks in pain

I have a question.
Normally, releases get promoted somehow. Normally like annoyingly often on artist's websites or facebook-pages. But this one didn't get any love? Only saw it on the Ipecac page, linked in the first post. How are you supposed to know about this, if only a few people will find out about it? And only checking the label pages doesn't always make sense, either - especially Mark has released his last records spread throughout many labels and their subdivisions: 4AD (Blues Funeral), Heavenly/Flooded Soil (Black Pudding, Imitations, Phantom Radio) and Light in the Attic (Has God Seen My Shadow?). Who is supposed to overlook all this?
Nevertheless, this album is great and I haven't changed my mind about it since I posted here on the release day. It is truly beautiful and I am glad to be able to listen to this one. Doesn't feel like it has been missing 13 years - it got a place in my heart/eye straight away. Thanks Randall!

inthefade - I have had the same problem with my vinyl but as I ordered from amazon I was able to download the mp3-files when the CD was released although I waited more than three weeks for te physical LP to arrive. It is something called "Auto-rip" which they offer for nearly every CD or LP. You can download to your amazon cloud account or download to your own device. I know buying from amazon is not supporting your local record store but sometimes it helps if you are desperately waiting for an album and the release is pushed and pushed...

I really like the Houston CD. Got my Heavenly 25 double-CD last week with the Record Store Day single tracks by Mark and Duke Garwood included.
I like both songs but don't know too much about the other artists on the compilation.
