i'm finding increasing the playback speed on the audiobook to 1.30x sounds more natural.

I'm just wondering when the movie adaptation's coming, because it'd be one hell of a crime flick.

Its proving hard to get a physical copy where i am . Ive got a kindle so and the pic quality is quite poor on my relatively old model. Wondering if there are any pictures etc that make the physical version that much better? or will e book version be ok?

Gaten Matarazzo (Stranger Things) as a younger Mark would be my pick

All the more interesting as there's an embargo in place while someone (not the people who have posted so far) has the online exclusive (as yet exercised). We've had to delay ours so it's a tad annoying that others are OK to bypass it

We've had to delay ours so it's a tad annoying that others are OK to bypass it That must be somewhat frustrating. The book is clearly out for delivery; my copy arrived from Waterstones yesterday. At the speed I read these days, should take quite a while. I might go for the audiobook trial as well if I'm going too slowly - I do a lot of audiobooks - mostly from the library. The library might buy it - might have to give them a nudge - they do buy all of the albums on release, so someone there must like Mark. Have to admit that I'm not sure what I feel about the book - I suspect it will reinforce my feeling that most singers I like generally have been complete w****** as people. Jim Morrison, Lou Reed, Iggy (though he seems to have aged into a national treasure - who'd have thought!), Neil Young etc. Won't stop keep loving the music though.

I've been listening to the audiobook on and off this morning (my hardback copy hasn't even been shipped yet it looks like) taking a break here and there because of how bluntly Lanegan seems to speak of other people and just how uncomfortable it feels sometimes to be listening to something so personal (that's me though I struggle with biographies sometimes because of this). Compelling stuff mind you. Jesus he doesn't hold back about Gary Lee Connor, it borders on cruel. If Connor is as messed up as Lanegan says maybe some of his recollections could have been left unsaid, he apparently seems like an unwell person maybe that's why I'm a bit uncomfortable with being hit with his (Connor) assholery over and over. Lanegan can speak cruely about himself but it's usually accompanied by a why. But I suppose that's the point, a warts and all history from his perspective. I probably shouldn't be contributing too much here because I haven't finished it yet and that seems a bit unfair to the whole piece of work.

It's something that is really difficult to brush off, and 'cruel' is exactly the word that sprang to mind over and over again. I guess that (to play devil's advocate) this book was to close a door, and in that particular case it's well and truly slammed. Gary put the Trees behind him a long time ago so hope this is just something to get angry about now and shrug off later. Yeah, it's been a long wait to publish! Review copy arrived in December and I submitted my bit in March. Exclusive thing is now up at the Grauniad, and it's an excellent read, much better than the terrible, terrible SEO baiting URL would suggest. Should be loads of reviews up tomorrow now. BTW - people with the book, how many chapters is it (excluding prologue/epilogue)? Strange question I know, but there's a reason

Thanks - probably can't say why I asked, but that's the answer I thought it'd be Oh come on! Was something cut? Anyway my book is still somewhere in UK so who knows when it arrives. i am kind of wondering....should we start another thread for discussion with a ***SPOILER WARNING*** I'm about 1/3 through the audiobook. my indigo order (canada) hasn't shipped yet... Yes, go ahead. Start a spoilers thread. I read it, in e-book format on my phone, in two days. The physical book arrived on the second day after I was done reading. Ida preferred to have a book in my hands and turn the pages, but it wasn’t too terrible to read it on the phone Watched some YouTube videos today of screaming trees concerts, some of which were referenced in the book. Remember those? Concerts? I’d really like to go to a concert right now, though not happening in these Quarantine times! 😖 😐

I just finished reading it and I'd love to know what was chopped from it.
All I'll say right now is that it is a brutal read. It lulls you in with a rhythm then drops you into what sounds a lot like hell. I have a lot of thoughts that I will be working through, but I do agree that a lot of what is said about the Trees comes off as mean-spirited.
Those last few chapters, though...damn.

I’ve listened up to Ch24 so far but I needed a break - it’s brutal listening to some of the drug stuff, I’ve chuckled a couple of times, didn’t realise that he was that drug fkd, kinda explains his personality, what he says about GLC has been said before in not so many words and some of the chapters are brief

Finished reading it, and I keep reading "most shocking rock book ever " etc..."you'll need to take a shower afterwards" etc...and I guess I've read too many f**cked up stuff cos I was not shocked whatsoever. It's not that spoilery but I'm gonna spoiler tag either way As for the "cruel" part, I thought there were mostly hilarious. It's just that Mark Lanegan comes across as one hell of a vindicative dude at time who just has those weird ongoing vendettas, sometimes almost for no reasons at all, but him and Liam Gallagher...match made in heaven or hell. I could feel the rage fumes coming from the book, and it's something that happened like what 30 years ago? You'd think Liam boiled his puppy alive and ate it in front of him or something.
To be fair when you read about his parents, and specially his mom, and that whole relationship gave me a genuine sad "aw, shit" towards the end of the book, you get why Mark Lanegan might have "tiny bits" of anger issues going on when he feels humiliated or disrespected.
All in all, it was an interesting and good read. I really did appreciate the time when he was able to display genuine emotions that weren't on the pissed off/raging scales or self loathing/feeling humiliated.
I'd love a part II, but I'm not holding my breath.
