So I just thought to create a separate thread for this with all the info available right now. The album will be a companion piece to my memoir, so there will be a bunch of acoustic songs on it that sound like the old way that I used to make records. It’s the first time that I’m actually writing songs about specific events because all the songs are linked to the book. ... The best thing that I got out of it was all of these new songs. I started writing these songs as soon as I was done with the book, and this collection of songs sort of have a depth to them that a lot of my music hasn’t had because that’s not the way I usually write. So the payoff was these songs, because I think the record that I’m finishing now is one of the better ones I’ve made.
... Greg is on that, Jack Irons, Martyn LeNoble, Ed Harcourt plays piano on a lot of it, Jack Bates (bass player of Smashing Pumpkins), Warren Ellis of the Bad Seeds plays violin, Adrian Utley of Portishead, and even John Paul Jones plays mellotron on something. The record is called Straight Songs of Sorrow and it just has a ton of famous people. northerntransmissions.com/mark-lanegan-is-not-taking-the-easy-ride/

Hard to believe he might be doing Q&A sessions like Nick Cave was a few months ago, but hey, good on him for continuing to push himself out of his comfort zone. I dig what he's currently doing musically, but if he wants to make another Winding Sheet or Whiskey type record I won't try to stop him.

Holy hell, I haven't even heard Somebody's Knocking yet and I already know the title of his next album!! This man sure is a working fool. I'll also take some more acoustic driven material. Doesn't he also have another album coming out with his wife in 2020, Black Phoebe?

What an awesome title that is. Recent years have been good - so much new music. Between Bubblegum (2004) and Blues Funeral (2012): 8 years and no Solo record The 8 years after BF: Imitations, Has God Seen My Shadow, No Bells on Sunday, Phantom Radio, Houston, Gargoyle, Somebody's Knocking, Straight Songs of Sorrow

A few thoughts...
I have two versions of vinyl test presses for Somebody's Knocking. One is dated September 5th of 2018 and the other is dates Feb 9th of 2019. The only change between the two test presses are that one song didn't clear licensing, so they re-recorded it / removed something. The point is that Somebody's Knocking has been finished and in the can for over a year now. The reason being is the record with Duke was unexpected, so they put that out and let Somebody's Knocking wait until With Animals ended it's run.
So...Lanegan recording another record in a year seems pretty easy to do, but now I'm wondering when Black Phoebe is going to be released, because I'm guessing that won't show up until 2021.
Also...I like the remix records, so hopefully that will come to fruition...good stuff!

Agree, from the last interview I saw posted it appeared as if him and the wife were still working on that album as well. With memoir album now coming in Spring 2020, wouldn't be surprised at all to see Black Phoebe deferred to 2021. Just thankful to get a (quality) release every year from him, truly a blessing compared to other artists I/we follow

I think i remember reading in an interview with mark that somebody's knocking has indeed been finished for quite a while but that his manager forgot to book him to tour. since he makes his living primarily from touring and merch sales at the tour, there was no real point releasing the album until he was touring (maybe touring in the part of the world where he was more popular?). I believe he even said he fired his manager over it. I'm paraphrasing from memory of course.

I'm looking forward to both albums (as well as the book), but I think I'm a little more interested in his project with his wife. Lanegan doing minimal techno and noise stuff is going to be... something.

This is more like it. Sorrowful Lanegan plays to his strengths, his voice is to ominous to sound ‘upbeat’. Although he will likely never reach the lofty heights of pre bubblegum era Lanegan I for one will be glad when he returns to more melodic material.
I know Mark has a lot of affection for the music he has been making over the last few years and I like the results but I grew up (Like many on this forum) with grunge and I miss the morbid, folksy, bluesy Mark and especially the beautiful guitar work of Mike Johnson.

Speaking of the Bubblegum Album/ era, I once again stumbled upon the "Hit the City" video. This vid has always struck me as something made by a fan & not an "official" video. Can anyone enlighten me as to the origination of the video? Is it actually an "official"/ released by Lanegan video? Or is it something a fan made to go along with the song? www.youtube.com/watch?v=azH5eEXtllc

Though he's put out something every year discounting '93, '05 & '11 .. & those years he probably did at least a long EP's worth of guest appearances ... incredible!

They contacted Lanegan and he liked the video. It was an art/film student project. Dont know to wich extend this is right but you can see a German city in the video for sure.

Yep, that's how the video comes across- sort of as homage/ tribute to the song & art/film student project... It's a cool vid so glad they/ whomever, made it!

Wesley Eisold on new album: "I sang a song on the forthcoming Mark Lanegan album which was a huge honor as he’s surely one of the realest and greatest singers of our time. If you are unfamiliar I urge you to listen to his album’s Bubblegum, Gargoyle and really, everything.. I also met Simon Bonney from Crime and the City Solution at Mark’s studio, another singer inspiring to me"
Please enjoy Cold Cave! They're a badass band!

I typed "straight songs" into Amazon today & it filled in "of Sorrow" automatically, it's not up yet, but must be adding soon!
