"The album will be a companion piece to my memoir, so there will be a bunch of acoustic songs on it that sound like the old way that I used to make records. It’s the first time that I’m actually writing songs about specific events because all the songs are linked to the book."
..................
skeleton key is ok, but was really hoping to hear an actual guitar being played in it. this synth stuff is starting to sound all the same. beautiful lyrics though

Interesting that they have a presale up when Heavenly hasn't announced it yet. I'd bet that comes in the next few days and hopefully Heavenly will have a limited vinyl variant as well. Good stuff!

UK PRE-ORDER UP! @marklanegan releases his new album, 'Straight Songs Of Sorrow'. 15 songs inspired by his life story, as documented by his own hand in his new memoir. Limited clear vinyl via @heavenlyrecs.

Nice new single. I'm sure like a few of the songs he's released recently, I'll like it more when I hear it in the context of the album.

My hopes are high for this album especially with all the contributors we now know about but it would have been nice to not have the lead single be yet another synth-heavy number...

Skeleton Key
lyrics interpreted by moi
Ugly I'm so very ugly I'm ugly inside and out there's no denying Love me Why would you ever love me? No one has ever loved me yet pretty baby
Skeleton key It won't open up It won't open any lock I have on me Rusted Bent and rusted Your precious skeleton key
I spend my life Trying every way to die Is it my fate to be the last one standing? Don't you know its a crime? All the shadowy peaks I climb And I have yet to ever be remanded Yes I have yet to ever be remanded
Holy Holy All of your religions are a lie Hold me Don't you try to hold me I clearly see my own way to the other side Yes I will make my own way to the other side
Crying Quit your crying Some will likely rise again tomorrow If you follow me down Through the underground I would hook a leash upon your collar Nothing good is sustained I gladly except the blame But all my words won't ad up to a dollar Yes all my words won't add up to a dollar
Love me Don't say that you love me Nobody has ever loved me yet pretty baby Crying Quit your crying I have ten thousand tears that you can borrow Come on follow me down Through the underground And i will sing to you a song of sorrow I will sing to you a sweet straight song of sorrow I will sing you all a sweet straight song of sorrow I will sing you all a sweet straight song of sorrow
Skeleton key Yeah Skeleton key Bent and rusty All of your dreams are locked away The hands have stopped On the timekeeper's clock And you have got to learn to breathe underwater Yeah you have got to learn to breathe underwater Skeleton key Bent and rusted As broken as the heart the dirt has eaten Love me Don't pretend to love me I've lost enough to know when I am beaten I've lost enough to know when I've been beaten I've lost enough to know when I've been beaten Yes I have lost enough to know when I've been beaten

While interpreting the lyrics it really struck me again how hauntingly beautiful this song is. That was my first take, but until you read the lyrics, you have no idea.
Goosebumps when he talks about spending his life trying to die, being the last one standing, and not being remanded...

Its a great tune, one of his most poignant and straightforward lyrically, I feel.
I'm also loving the production compared to that of Somebody's Knocking and Gargoyle. His vocals are front and center in the mix (instead buried and low) and the music/tone has some punch (similar to Blues Funeral, which I felt was outstandingly produced and mixed). My hopes are high indeed.

My hopes are high indeed. Couldn't agree more. It feels almost like an extended version of Phantasmagoria Blues, which is marvelous in my book. The lyrics mix brutal honesty with poetry, I've always enjoyed that. I also wasn't expecting him to sing "all your religions are a lie" when biblical references and a certain language have become such a part of his style. I'm very pleased with this song, I'd call it a long, electronic blues rant. Gonna order the record ASAP.
