For fuck sakes. Days on the heels of Dallas from The Sadies passing too. Very saddened

Just realised I somehow managed to post a thread about his passing in all the rest earlier rather than here. I'm genuinely in shock. He'll never be matched in my opinion. Loved his lyrics as much as his voice. He elevated everything he touched. Rest Easy and safe travels Mr Lanegan

Very sad news indeed, it’s hard to process. I’ve been listening to Mark for nearly 30 years and I was hoping he would just keep on going despite the odds like Keith! I hope he passed away peacefully.

Devastated. His music has been one of my best friends for almost 17 years. I can’t believe this. His music has done so much to help people and has helped me through so much. I am glad I got to thank him for it. This is so sad. I can’t believe it.
Edit - from the back cover of his Covid memoir :
Don't love anything too much because a vein will open it'll pour out a river when you are already drowning Close the book if the story's over cash out at curtain call this is clearly the fall I won't get up from

Of my few friends, only my wife and one other person know that I am a Mark Lanegan fan. My friend John, who told me about Mark's death, also painted the painting in my avatar. I brought it to the show my wife and I went to at Maurer Hall, Old Town School of Folk Music, Chicago, IL, USA Oct 10 2013. When I finally got up to Mark to have him sign it after the show, he pulled it away and said, Thank you very much and made like he was going to keep it and put it behind him. I was kind of stunned and didn't know what to say....he starts laughing as I am kind of stammering and finally signs it and gives it back to me. He really enjoyed that. Him and my wife had a great laugh.I was speechless. I just remember thinking how pale and thin he was.
It is pretty shocking still sitting and thinking about how many weeks, days, hours I have spent listening to his music. There were many years were I listened to almost nothing else. I remember when Sweet Oblivion just entered my consciousness and proceeded to rock my world, then Whiskey for the Holy Ghost and there was no going back. I was always late to the party when things came out and missed the times I could have seen the Trees and the early solo shows. I am thankful for the times that I was able to see him.
Thanks Mark.

If anyone hasn’t seen it, he played a gig for Irish TV in Dec 2020 youtube.com/watch?v=PB5muYz-1iQApples from a tree is heartbreaking. It doesn’t feel real. I can’t process it either. Sitting next to a pile of crumpled tissues.

Absolutely gutting. The world is so much fucking smaller, now. All those tales of death and sorrow served as no preparation for this...I simply cannot fathom, cannot understand.

Sad news, but thankful to Mark for his artistic gifts - and also thankful to all in this forum who admired those gifts and generously shared their thoughts, passions, and various live shows. Him and my wife had a great laugh.I was speechless. I just remember thinking how pale and thin he was. Haha, classic. I remember when I had some records for him to sign, lining up pretty excited...then when the moment came I all but froze. Handed the records over and stammered something about "Go Clippers!" (NBA team who he supported). He was so gracious. A very affecting presence.

Shook his hand on the 25th of November 2019 in Budapest. Didn't know then it would be the last time.
I'm sad.

I am just numb! He's been in my life for 30 fuckin years and it's like losing a family member. So lucky to have Lanegan nights over the years in different towns and cities in the UK.So lucky to have spoken to the man and shake his hand(starstruck). Thank you Mr Lanegan for the music and memories you have given me and Mrs Jesus. YOU WILL NOT BE FORGOTTEN! RIP big man.

Yeah, I woke up in Paris this morning and started crying immediately. I've seen Mark live over 30 times in all the bands he's played in, starting with the Screaming Trees in the 90s up now. I have over 250 vinyl records that he has sang on. Over 25 test presses. I collected Mark's music like an insane fanatic, because his music got me through some hard times in life and I was absolutely proud of how hard the man worked and how he wore his heart on his sleeve for all to see....but it was always the music for me.
The one thing I'm taking solace in is that I bet there is new music to come. When I interviewed Joe Cardamone for my podcast The Travelling Entertainer just a month ago, Joe indicated that they still were making music, so I'm guessing there are some unfinished songs to release. I bet that Black Phoebe recorded more than the EP they released, which should come to light at some point. I bet Mark recorded more tracks for the next Humanist project and I bet that he has some "one off" collaborations on other records that will come out as well. I know there is another "self released" live record that Mark would usually sell at concerts called "Knuckles - live at Turnhout", which is probably just a few hundred copies laying around someplace that will probably get sold at some point.
I guess the point is that although I'm sadder than ever, I'm going to try and stay positive because even though Mark is gone, his music will live on and we haven't heard the last of him yet.
Ugh...ugh...ugh...ugh...ugh!

Ugh...ugh...ugh...ugh...ugh! I woke up this morning, still gutted about the news. Apart from being truly sad for his family and friends, I can't believe I'll never see another live gig and that we'll never get to hear that voice in a live setting again. Your post makes me think that there is more to come though, which is something to take solace from. I can't remember if I imagined it or not (many Mark thoughts all blurring together at the moment), but I'm sure I read an interview only a week or two ago with him saying he has some or all songs for a new album done, so we may get one last album or possibly at least an LP, depending on how much was complete, as well as the content you mentioned. I'll maybe try and find it later. For now, just trying to concentrate on work, with Field Songs playing.

I believe there are many projects that can come out posthumously. There was a post from Donal Logue which said Mark recorded hours of music in Ireland. Back in 2020 Mark already talked about Black Phoebe LP which was almost complete, said that his next Mark Lanegan band album is written and demoed and ready for recording in January 2021 and I think there was some talk about collab with someone from Doves. Who knows how much is there and what will see the light of the day but maybe we can take a little bit of solace from that.

Yes, he says he had recorded with local Tralee, Co Kerry musican & producer, Tony O'Flaherty (a mutual friend of Donal Logue, the Irish-American actor who help Lanegan & Shelly get settled in Killarney. I'm finding some solace that Lanegan died in Ireland, the home of his ancestors. I really hoped this was going to be a whole new chapter his in art, connecting with Ireland (and Europe) more and more, and I just know there was a whole load of Irish musicians and artists who were looking forward to this post-L.A. period... So yes, there's definitely lots of tracks in the kitchen to be tasted, I imagine.
And Raeni... if you're reading... thanks so much for facilitating this forum over the years. xx

Likewise...big thanks to Raeni. What a fucking shitting fucking 24 hours...just the worst. I can't bare to even listen to his music at this point and I keep thinking about the lyrics in the song Lay Me Down off the new Dark Mark vs. Skeleton Joe release.
Lay Me Down, I'm ready now I ran so fast But life suddenly passed While I was locked behind those rusty bars Gathering scars
