This forum’s been understandably quiet lately. I thought it’d be cool to start a thread about different unreleased projects we’ve heard about since Mark passed.
Here are some I remember hearing others discuss in various interviews:
- Upcoming Afghan Whigs album on September 9: Mark sings on two tracks - Dark Mark & Skeleton Joe unreleased songs (I believe I heard this in an interview with Joe Cardamone in Mishka Shubaly’s podcast) - Black Phoebe (I can’t remember where I read someone say Shelley is finishing up Black Phoebe stuff) - Movie soundtrack? I think I heard this on a podcast. I can’t remember who he was collaborating with or what the project was. - Mark Lanegan/Isobel Campbell vinyl reissues (mentioned in Performance Anxiety podcast) - Posthumous album? Slight speculation, but I read he had another album fully demoed months before he died, and I believe he was practicing with his band. Maybe there was a completed one? I don’t know.

The soundtrack was with Barrett Martin. Old blues covers. I hope some stuff got recorded and sees release.

You are correct in that the forum as well as reddit has been quiet re Mark. I believe it was in the Italian version interview with Aldo Stuyf and he was the one that said Shelley would finish. Aldo was also part of that project or at least that's what the article said. IRC, there was a podcast with Mark's Italian friend Roberto Bentivegna in which the movie soundtrack was mentioned. There were two with Roberto, one with Mishka Shubaly and the other with the guy that does the Better than Food podcast. He also said something about this in the Wesley Eisold / Mark podcasts they were doing; I am thinking the one with Dylan Carlson.
Haven't yet listened to the new podcast with Isobel Campbell but it's in my Watch Later YT folder. Mark had also said somewhere he had 13 new songs demoed. I can't remember where I read or heard that. He stayed busy it seems.
He also had several pages or words of a novel completed.
I would imagine it would depend on his estate and/or will (if he had one) and if Shelley wants to or can do anything with what remains. Hard to believe next month (August) he will be gone 6 months. But who's counting and we still don't know what COD was (and may never) Reading DIAC, it wouldn't surprise me if it was somehow COVID related.

Don't know who on this site is a Screaming Trees fan but the fan page on Facebook has some good stuff and Gary Lee Connor (who is the admin for the site) is always posting unreleased demos of their music as well as other tidbits. Hope I can put this comment here.

Hi Wellwater, something more about the album with DMcK? Never heard nothing about it I have a very vague recollection of some talk on here back in the Bubblegum days about Mark making music with Duff. Any sort of release is just more wishful thinking on my behalf, sorry. The Ben Shephard Gunfighting music was spoken about more on here during the 2000's but I can't remember if it originated from an interview with Mark/Ben or where the notion came from.

If something recorded 20 years ago never got released I'd guess the artists weren't satisfied with it. One thing that always puzzled me was the number of collaborations he did. Perhaps the one off songs could be grouped together?

I'm not sure if there will be an album of Black Phoebe stuff pretty much already to go and that the stuff Shelley was working on was in addition to that or whether she was finishing up the album (I seem to remember Mark saying that the full album would have been released the year after the EP and that it was complete, but I cannot find the article now). He did also add that the original Black Phoebe EP was going to be remixed by Not Waving whom he did the Downwelling album with, so I don't know if that will find a release somewhere too.

1. Prior to the Houston publishing demos being released, Randall Jamail told the forum that there were 15 songs recorded and we would eventually hear 14 of them. one of the songs was scrapped as per mark's wishes (hit the city demo - its mentioned in the liner notes for bubblegum). the other 2 songs are unknown. 2. The Urbino song "Never Come Down." Aldo Struyf confirmed on facebook that he is in possession of a never released, never properly mixed studio version of the song that was recorded in the bubblegum era. 3. There is an unreleased song titled "Love Story" (not taylor's version ) that appears in his lyrics book "I am the Wolf". Mathias Schneeberger receives credit for the music. The lyrics also appear on the jacket for Devil in a Coma, and the lyrics also appear in the pages of the book.

I wonder if SubPop could scrape together some Deluxe editions. Winding Sheet...I don't know what would be left. Maybe something from the Jury sessions? Juarez without the fade? Whiskey... 120 Minutes and that 8 song demo. Scraps...no idea. I'll Take Care... I've heard 20 plus songs where recorded; 15 have been released. Some compilation covers like Red Ballon would fit. Don't know what soundboard are our there for the different eras.

And I guess there are now 5 songs left from Bubblegum...Josephine, Blood Crackers, Never Come Down, the the 2 Bside. It was such a fertile period he had to pre release the Oddities to clear the deck; I suspect more stuff is left. I wonder it Homme would be interested in finishing some stuff that needs it.

This is a long shot, but does anyone recall the interview from Soulsavers' Rich Machin circa 2009 when Broken was released when he indicated that either he did (or wanted to) record Whiskey For the Holy Ghost in its entirely during the Broken sessions? In fact I'm pretty sure he said they did record it, but I'd need someone to fact check me. I think a few (or at least one) of the old timers on this board saved that interview (I hope). Extremely unlikely to see the light of day but just throwing it out there, especially given how incredibly well done the Whiskey songs were done on both Soulsavers albums. Edit: Found it, I knew I wasn't dreaming (and we're getting closer to 2025 onewhiskey.proboards.com/thread/3227/soulsavers-interview-enjoy

I wonder if we could get more official bootlegs released. I realise these were only merchandise stall releases before, so don't know the legal stuff involved in releasing more widely.

They used to release any left over on tours on the Lanegan official website when he first started releasing the 'bootleg' CDs at shows, so it would be nice if they could do some re-presses and do the same again (though whether the overall demand would justify the costs, I don't know). I know that he had a few legal issues with copyrights to the cover songs but he changed the tracklisting for those I believe so as not to include covers (which I believe is why a second version of the Leeds CD was released without Julia Dream, and why the wonderful version of This Strange Effect never made it onto the Union Chapel CD).

In terms of future releases, I know that the second Humanist album is now in the works (may even be finished, I think the first single has just been released).
It wouldn't surprise me if there was a Lanegan track or two on there, be it something already recorded specifically for this album, or an outtake from the first album (not sure if he ever recorded a version of Shock Collar for the original before deciding that Dave Gahan would be a better fit, but that would be good to hear).

Thanks for the update. Sadly, I figured this may be the case Could just have been a dismissive "I don't have it." Sadly not I believe only those previously recorded tracks were released. However I wouldn't mind seeing Rich do something with the album in a reimagining and use Marks original vocal tracks.

i was pretty sure that there were professional cameras at the Soulsavers at the Electric Ballroom way back and therefore maybe other gigs too? If anyone happens to meet Rich again, they might ask. Fantastic gig too. Probably the best I saw of Mark, that and the first acoustic gig at Kings Cross.

Greg Dulli mentioned a couple of unreleased covers that he recorded with Mark in a new Rolling Stone interview:
"We did a bizarre cover of “California Dreamin'” that never came out, and we also did “Crossbones Style” by Cat Power. I don’t know where they are, but we definitely recorded both of those songs."
