I think it's cowardly that so many of you are only now deciding to tell me why you haven't liked or responded to my posts when there's a group consensus that I suck.

Stephanie, my point was... Alyosha and yourself are deliberately, and for the purposes of ego and attention (more than anything), throwing in philosophical & literary references seemingly with an MO of 'find as many words of 3 syllables or more so that lots of people don't feel comfortable to respond'. if you don't expect the average man on the street to react with a 'why the fuck are they talking like that?' then you clearly have no self-awareness.
the faux-intellectualism and essaying is grating, to say the least.
you should also remember that there are many people here who do not speak English as a first language, and there are young people here as well. this makes your posts a private converstaion, as many are simply unable or unwilling to respond to this kind of talk.
it would be easy for some of us to talk at a level that would leave many out of the conversation, and there is simply no need for that.
to talk in such a way is a failing in my eyes, as it shows an inability to communicate with, in the words of Neil Young, 'ordinary people'.
this is what is great about the lyrical abilities of Lanegan & Dulli.. they talk to many people from many backgrounds, in a way that is universal and inclusive.

And for the record, I do not not think stephanie nor alyosha went too far off topic. In fact, I think they were trying to get more in depth while staying in context of the subject matter, and suceeded. They were simply noting the possible influences and parallels of Hegel's work on the Saturnalia album. They may have been long hard reads for some, but I do not think they crossed any boundaries. If Mark, Greg, and the rest of the guys were reading steph's and alyosha's thoughts on the album, I believe a huge smile would come to their faces.
Ok, let's say they did go completely off topic, i've seen much much worse on this board.
I've seen many perfectly fine threads go down the crapper when a member would toss in a obscure semi-humorous one liner, which would elicit more one liners from their "buddies". Next thing you know, the thread has gone completely off topic, and the 3 people are yacking it up having a grand ole time while everyone else if left bewildered.
It's true. I hope this thread recovers. I sure didn't help. Had to be said though.

Wow. Seemed to me like they were staying on topic--they were talking about the music in context with their other interests. If I get bored by any of the bits, I move on to the next message. It's not hard and it's not rocket science.
There are others that love to show off their own expertise (ahem, mokkly, cough) going on at length about things that might or might not be of interest to others. So what? Take part in the conversations that you want to, ignore those you don't, and enjoy the fucking party. Not interested in exploring Saturnalia via some connection to Hegel (the famous German philosopher--heheh), but there is nothing wrong with others doing so.
The only thing that pisses me off about threads on this board is that they delve too often into personal insults and generally rude behavior. Yeah, I know I've contributed a few times--I'm not perfect, and I'm aware of that. I do try, though, to contain the worst of my thoughts.
So, yeah, Saturnalia is fucking great and I love reading the reviews that other people are posting. Thanks, all, for contributing.

Some damage control here-- I like this place and the people here. Even mokkly I wouldn't have hung around if I didn't. I do not feel superior to anyone here, nor was my intention ever to show off. What is there to show off? If anything, I was conscious that my nerdiness / dorkiness would likely stick out like a sore thumb here. But I figured, great, someone's gotta represent for the nerd contingent Just because someone is different doesn't mean they're "better" or "worse." Some people use five-syllable words, others use grunts. It only matters to the extent that communication occurs. And it seems that my attempts to communicate here have not been too successful, as people are reading into what I write things I never intended. I guess that's my just desserts for reading too much into just about everything Bottom line is, I'm an ordinary person too, mokkly, and this is how I talk / write. I definitely appreciate what you are saying and often wish I was better able to keep things concise and simple. But I also think there's room here for more "high-falutin'" conversations. Dulli and Lanegan did name the album "Saturnalia," not "Fukkin' Rock N Roll!!!" It would be my hope that things like philosophy could be brought in and discussed in a way that those unfamiliar with it could understand. That transformation of "lofty" material into "ordinary" language could have emerged here if you'd given the conversation time to unfold. Haha, oh boy. I'm glad I decided to check out this thread. Much more entertaining than reading crappy reviews.

"Saturnalia" inspires and it should inspire in a variety of different ways. The multiple dimensions and layers of "Saturnalia" are precisely part of its allure and its charm."
"they talk to many people from many backgrounds..."
It's funny, both Alyosha and mokkly (is dead) are hinting at the same things here... It's too bad Mokkly felt compelled to act like a crazy, intolerant troll. I don't necessarily feel the need to connect Saturnalia with German philosophy, but I don't see anything wrong with that either. I do however think it is lame to attack Stephanie or Alyosha for their perspectives. I agree with zombyboy:
"So, yeah, Saturnalia is fucking great and I love reading the reviews that other people are posting. Thanks, all, for contributing."
Also, I liked what Big Trees Guy wrote. I think Mark and Greg and the rest of the band would encourage people to interpret the music the way they see fit and they would probably get a kick out of Stephanie's and Alyosha's comments. That's my two cents.
PS. I've been a long-time lurker and thought i should sign up, so here i am.
