As far as the 'good not great' thing goes...I think it had everything to do with him having problems with his moniter and microphone. He did seem to hold back a tad because he was distracted/pissed, but I thought they sounded great anyhow (from where I was standing) ...course, it was my first lanegan solo show (I've seen him with Screaming Trees and QOTSA...I had a ticket for last year but I was sick) so I'm sure that played a part in my perception of the show...as well as being in the 2nd row. I had a great time nonetheless...maybe it was the cape cods I drank and the company I kept.
I honestly wish we all could've hung out a bit more. Maybe we need a bowling team or something.

sometimes, when i'm lonely, i wished i lived in LA, but then i would i lived in a basement that doesn't exist yet in northamptonshire.
i'm planning to have that be the last word out of my mouth when i die.
NORTHAMPTONSHIRE!!!!!! GAHHHHH!!!!!!! I DIE!!!!!!
i wish i could have been there. but i'm glad i wasn't, you probably would have just bored me with trivial chit chat.
i would rather just stay home and masterbate.

i don't know what celeso is, and i don't care.
but i did care that i missed the SF show.
ad i cared even more that i didn't get to the see the el rey show, and i am jealous, or whatever.
i think it would have been fun, we would've gotten high. we would've gotten drunk. we would have had orgies.
it's something i insist on.
the orgies.
the male to female ratio sounds right. and i would have treated carlito like a woman, gentle, warm, loving.
so, yeah.
wanna hang out?

hey, didnt i get into trouble for saying something similar a while ago? yes you did in fact. and i wholeheartedly endorse and support any mokkly-bashing that transpires on this here board. but.....you could have been right. i've seen real good lanegan shows bordering on transcendental, and i've seen bad bad shows where it looks like he would rather just be anywhere else than here. this show was none of those. just in the middle. and aside from the fabulous company at the show, i gotta admit i was a bit dissapointed. the very last show i saw, just a year ago at the same place for hctwc, was the best i have ever seen him perform. now after all this practice touring around the fucking globe, what happened? where's the inspiration? and i still love the man dearly, and i will still see him at every l.a. show for the rest of my life, no matter what band he's with. but i'm not traveling to detroit, that's for fucking sure. and here's a review motherfuckers. note that i am not crazy, and the review was written by a former member of the germs. the fucking germs!! so read it. THE DARK STUFF by Don Waller Mark Lanegan is a world-class singer of danger and regret, but his El Rey show lacked the clarity of his convictions Wrapping his cavernous, wood-smoked, fine-grained baritone around a remarkably wide range of musical styles while plumbing emotions you’d rather not admit to having, Mark Lanegan is one of the best – as well as most under-rated – singers to emerge in the last 20 years. Lanegan, now 39, first came to prominence alongside battling man-mountain brothers Lee and Van Connor in the the Ellensburg, Washington-spawned Screaming Trees, who fought their way up from the late-’80s indie underworld to a post-Nirvana major label deal and whose crowning commercial moment came when “Nearly Lost You” found its way to Cameron Crowe’s grunge-era romantic comedy Singles soundtrack, but it’s his six solo albums that’ve cemented his reputation as a world-class vocalist. Starting with the stripped-to-the-bone The Winding Sheet (1990), the similar, but with far stronger songs Whiskey For The Holy Ghost (’94), Scraps At Midnight (’98), and the wildly diverse, all-covers I’ll Take Care Of You (’99), Lanegan stepped outside the sonic maelstrom that surrounded the Seattle scene, weaving threads of folk, blues, country, and gospel into a rich tapestry that’s all tied together by his distinctive, deep-as-the-Batcave voice. Think Johnny Cash. Think Nick Cave … or Leonard Cohen … or Tom Waits, all of whom share a certain similarity of sound and – more importantly – sensibility with Lanegan. So why isn’t this guy a household name, pausing only between supermodels and hotel heiresses to emerge from his own private island and record his third, multi-platinum album of pre-rock standards? In a word, drugs. After a third-time’s-the-charm trip to rehab and career-saving guest spots/tours with the Queens of the Stone Age, Greg Dulli’s Twilight Singers project, and sundry other High Desert recording sessions, Lanegan unleashed Field Songs (2001) and the just-released Bubblegum – preceeded by last year’s Here Comes That Weird Chill EP. Mean, moody, and magnificent, these discs generally feature more sculpted soundscapes, more uptempo tuneage, and – in the case of Bubblegum – the light-footed contributions of some heavy friends: PJ Harvey, Dulli, QOTSA’s Josh Homme and Nick Oliveri, ex-Guns N’ Roses members Izzy Stradlin and Duff McKagan, and erstwhile Masters of Reality mainman Chris Goss (who co-produced with Lanegan). Much like the music, which draws from familiar vintage sources, but eludes association with a specific era or recording, both the guest list and the sleight-of-hand production touches add color, but keep the focus resolutely on Lanegan’s deep blue-black velvet paintings. This isn’t party music – more like after-after-party music; soundtracks to those solitary, end-of-the-night, just you-and-your-demons moments of doubt and pain, regrets, whiskey and cigarettes. Backed by two – then three – guitarists, a bassist, a drummer, and a female vocalist, Lanegan gave the near-capacity Monday (Oct. 11) night at the El Rey Theatre crowd slightly more than an hour’s worth of this dark stuff. Hanging off the microphone stand like a back-from-the-dead Jim Morrison, Lanegan was virtually silent between songs. Obviously, you don’t have to fall into some kind of showbizzy, 32-tricks-you-can-do-with-a-banana and a bent spoon shtickla, but no song or even band introductions? Nothing to draw an audience into what is ultimately uncomprising, emotionally difficult, drug-is-the-love material? Eventually, the one-two combination of too-many midtempo tunes – every singer’s preferred showcase, of course – and a thoroughly murky sound mix turned the evening into a monochromatic miasma that all but obliterated the subtle nuances that make Lanegan’s records so assured, eccentric, and rewarding, although that teeth-grinding “Methamphetamine Blues” and the warm ’n’ tender interpretation of “I’ll Take Care Of You” (Brook Benton wrote it; Bobby “Blue” Bland had the ’59 R&B hit) were true standouts. Lanegan can sing his narrow ass off, but when you can’t hear the picture for the frame, it’s just … anti-climatic. Pump up the volume. Sprinkle all that production fairy dust over the top, too. But you’ve got to figure out how to make such a somber, relentlessly introspective oeuvre reach out and touch a 700-seat room.

'karl' - i knew you'd see it my way when the show rolled into town... believe me though, the last london show was pretty hot.
