hello to you all, my fellow mark lanegan fanatics. i'm going to see the man's concert on three different occasions. first in london, then in paris and finally in bologna.
i'm just curious about using flash. is that a really bad idea? i mean, is it something i should not do? i'm most likely going to be as close to the stage as ever possible. what do you guys say - flash or no flash? the thing is that with my digital camera, the photos are usually brilliant with flash but blurry and not worth taking in concerts without it.
feel free to comment.

I took pics of Mark when there was plenty of daylight.. After that I tried not to flash him in his face (!lol!). So I carefully waited till he was looking down, turning around or when he was walking back to the micstand. I was too scared that he'd see who kept taking pics + flash and that he might chuck my camera.
My guess is that he rrrreally doesn't like it. Especially after taking into consideration that at Pukkelpop they taped a sign to the stage saying that no one (press) was allowed to use flashphotography for the first 3 songs.

yeah, that's pretty much what i had in my mind too. i guess it isn't that nice to have a zillion people flashing you in the eye all the time. guess i'll just leave the camera where i'm staying and focus on the real thing. i most definitely don't want to make him walk off the stage because of some amateur photos. besides, i would probably get murdered pretty fast, if that ever happened.

talking about mark touring with QOTSA, i have a little anecdote to share with you. in the summer of 2003, when they played at the roskilde festival, on the main stage, i was there. in the front row to be exact, feeling better than ever. that was, until i took out my camera. i took about a roll of photos with and without the flash.
everything went fine, until something caught my attention. there was a lady wearing a baseball cap that said "crow safety supervisor" just below the stage, where the safety folks usually stood making sure no one got hurt. normally that'd been a reasonably good thing. especially, since she wasn't just a regular "crowd safety person", but like a sort of a platoon leader type of a person.
except that this time, the lady was trying to get, of all the people, MY attention and shouting at ME. she quickly made me realize i'd be kicked out of the audience if i wouldn't stop using the flash. and that's exactly when i stopped taking pictures with the flash on. and that was at 19:30, in the middle of the summer, in denmark, where it really isn't that dark before midnight.

He'd want me to continue the good work in his name. That's why I'm one of his devilettes Actually, he ordered me and the girls. So don't have a cow lady! You still have Trent.

Ooowkaaaaay, I was a very lucky piece of flesh then cus there was a lot of security walking around while I was taking pics at Pukkelpop. Don't risk it dude(tte?), as soon as I get my film developed I'll hook you up. And it isn't like there aren't enough pics going around (plenty @ this site) too satisfy our needs I went to see Mark perform 3 times but only took pics at 1 gig.. Kept thinking how distracting taking pics is, missed a lot cus of that...

i'm just curious about using flash. is that a really bad idea? I say yes, it is a bad idea. Taking flash pics from way back in the audience doesn't much help, and if you are right up front, imagine how annoying that is, and how it can wreck concentration. If I take a camera, I just have a little point and shoot type, and even with 800 speed film you can get a decent picture without flash. Basically, I wait for a song that has some 'mood lighting', like blue or purple lights, and take it when the lights are brightest (which admittedly is not very often). You can also get 1000 speed film pretty easily - not just for camera shops anymore!

Although if you do visit a photographic shop, you can pick up films as fast as ISO 3200, I imagine the pics will come out pretty grainy though.
<tic>All of this academic really as Mark seems to have his eyes screwed tightly shut for most of the show so I doubt he'd see the flashes</tic>
