Ministry yay, why didn't someone recommend this to me before (Dave you rule ) Looks like there are only two more to come...at least Mr Jourgensen claims so. And Canada might have a new citizen soon if things turn out bad in november.. Mass destruction Ministry man wages holy war of words against Bush leagues By DARRYL STERDAN Winnipeg Sun Jesus may have built his hotrod, but it took George Dubya to help kickstart Al Jourgensen's career again. "That's what everybody says -- that we make s--y albums when the Democrats win and good ones when the Republicans are in office," laughs the Ministry frontman down the line from his home deep in the heart of Bush country. "I guess the Bushes are kind of my muse, aren't they? But we're not on each other's Christmas card lists, I can tell you that." Al might want to reconsider and send the Bushies a Yule log this holiday season. After all, it does seem like their professional lives are cosmically, comically and perhaps even karmically intertwined. Jourgensen's first brush with Bushness came in 1992, when the Cuban-born Chicago native and industrial-metal pioneer released Psalm 69: The Way to Succeed and the Way to Suck Eggs. After more than a decade of toiling in semi-obscurity with Ministry, he finally foisted his unique brand of searing abrasion and pummeling sludge on to the mainstream via two key tracks: The frantic single Jesus Built My Hotrod, featuring the gibbering nonsense of Butthole Surfer Gibby Haynes; and the controversial N.W.O., featuring the garbled syntax of the first president Bush. Now, with his new CD Houses of the Mole, Jourgensen and Ministry have come full circle. And then some. This time, there isn't just one Bush-thwacking soundscrape -- the whole disc is brought to you by the letter Dubya, from the incendiary No W all the way through cuts like Waiting, Worthless, Wrong and Worm. Believe it or not, Jourgensen denies he's got a Bush fetish. "We literally did not realize that all the songs started with W until about eight or nine tunes in," he claims. "I had no idea. I honestly didn't go into the album with that in mind. It just happened -- and once we noticed it, we kept it going. Hey, why tempt cosmic fate?" Why, indeed. But whatever his intent going in, there's no disputing that Houses of the Mole represents a long-overdue creative rebirth for the 44-year-old Jourgensen, who lost most of the last few years to a devastating heroin addiction. "I was an addict for 16 years, and it cost me everything," he says frankly. "I lost my house. I lost my family at the time. I lost all my equipment. I had a $500-a-day habit. It was a mess. I was a mess." The bottom came "two years, 16 days, 20 hours" ago, when Jourgensen was bitten by a poisonous spider and nearly lost his arm. (er..did I already recommend this link for a beautiful developing spider bite? www.picarelli.com.br/fotolegendas/fotolegenda062003h.htm Just scroll down..;D ) "I was at the point where it was, 'Either I have to quit or die today.' So I quit. I didn't need the Betty Ford Clinic or anyone to tell me. I just knew." Now he's out to make up for lost time. He's on a tour that brings him to the Burton Cummings Theatre on Tuesday. In addition to the new Ministry album, he's reviving his old side project Revolting Cocks. And, oh, yeah, he wants to put his president out of work. Putting his money where his big mouth is, Jourgensen is lending his voice to a chorus of artists working to defeat Bush in the November elections. "We need a new lobbyist in Washington. The people that have been running the Republican Party -- aka the oil industry -- are the worst. Any lie in the name of corporate profit is OK. Between them and the conservative right pulling the corporate strings, it's time for a change." If Jourgensen's grasp of the issues seems unlikely for an ex-junkie punk icon, well, once upon a time he was going to be a teacher. In fact, he claims it's still in the plan -- and sooner rather than later. "I've only got two more Ministry records to do and then I'm going to quit rock and go back to teaching," he claims. "I'm deadly serious. In the long run, it's all about changing kids' minds. Rock and teaching are the same thing -- you have to grab the kids' attention by performing." And if there isn't a regime change down south in November, he'll be doing his performing -- on a stage or in a classroom -- north of the border, he says. "My wife is Canadian, and let me tell you this: If Bush wins again, I'll be a Canadian, too. I could live up there no problem. I'm the world's biggest hockey fan." Hockey aside, it seems like a no-win situation. If Bush stays, Al goes. If John Kerry wins, the next Ministry disc is sure to suck eggs. But Jourgensen hasn't give up hope. "There's always the possibility that Jeb will run somewhere down the line, and we'll get another couple of kickass albums out of it."

I don't have it. She only uses voices on this album, no instruments. I've heard some tracks which I liked.
My "to buy" list is getting into astronomical proportions.

Today has been a bit of an eclectic one:
Buffalo Daughter: Pshychic (I musta been really drunk last week to have bought 2 albums by this lot. But while I was only vaguely impressed by I, this one from the Japanese arty electronica prog headcases is really rather special. Bit on the long side though - my fave track, Cyclic, clocks in at just over 10 mins, and that's half as long as the closing track...)
Doughboys: Home Again (after spending almost a decade tracking down this album, I found it in Montreal 3 years ago. The sucky memories it occasionally evokes about the time when I bought it is outweighed by some utterly great songs)
Minor Threat: Complete Discography (for old times' sake)

Now officially ( ;D): Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Abattoir Blues + The Lyre of Orpheus What's it like? I'm worried. I thought the last two albums were a bit light-on, and the fact he's now released a double album has me nervous. Although, I like the single that's out – is it a good reflection of the whole thing?

In my humble opinion it's great. At first I thought I'm so enthusiastic about it because I was relieved it didn't become worse after Nocturama but six weeks later I'm still nuts about it. Nature Boy is a slight indicator although it's obviously the most pop-like song on it.. I already pestered some people with excited cheers via email, good opportunity to give it another go, mwahaha.
"I was always rambling on about how disappointed I was in Nocturama and I was really sceptical about the new one because I like Blixa Bargeld a lot (he left the Bad Seeds because he was bored after the quiet Boatman's Call, No More Shall We Part and Nocturama... haha, I'm sure he curses himself after listening to the new one) but Abattoir Blues/Lyre of Orpheus reconciles me completely with Cave. The manic preacherman is back again at last.. Most of the songs have some fervent, "punkish" gospel atmosphere; huge, passionate gospel choirs wherever you go...very stirring and powerful like Get Ready For Love or There She Goes My Beautiful World (especially this one), but there are also some intimate, touching songs like Cannibal's Hymn (so beautiful! You're heart banging like a gun, you're heart beating like a drum, if I were Mrs Cave I'd go completely nuts), O Children, Spell, Carry me (unsensational at first but then even more haunting). There isn't as much violin as on And No more Shall We Part where it was the main instrument, although here and there an electric violin is coming through. I am surprised how organic and "live" the drums sound, mixed into the foreground, just like the bass; and Mr Cave is a berserk at the piano again. Also there are some nice surprises concerning Cave-unlike instrumentation with amateurish charm on "Breathless" (a choir of a special instrument, I won't spoil it by telling which one), which sounds like a little light acoustic summer swing... To give a better impression of it one might say this album sounds like a good combination of Let Love In (Supernaturally!, Let The Bells Ring) and And No More Shall We Part (Messiah Ward, Baby You Turn Me On, Easy Money, Abattoir Blues) with a little bit of Murder Ballads (Fable of the Brown Ape, The Lyre of Orpheus, Hiding All Away). There are some boring songs, too (Baby, You Turn me On, Messiah Ward, Easy Money) but the others are balancing them out well enough; "

Now officially ( ;D): Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Abattoir Blues + The Lyre of Orpheus BLOOOOOOODY HELLLL WOMAN!! Just got off listeining to The Firstborn Is Dead- IT IS OFF THE FRIGGING WALL! WOW. ok-Tupelo, Black Crow King, Knockin On Joe & Wanted Man especially,(originally penned for Dylan or Cash i read somewhere??) i thought were brilliant. Ive never heard anything quite like it- tons of atmosphere, never heard the blues sound so demented ;D Nicks vocals sound real powerfull, much more so than on NMSWP which i still liked as well, its just that (& maybe im on my own here), when he's doing his ballads- sometimes he has a strained sound that im not so into, but here is great. It needs to be immersed in. Havnt listend to KATP yet, but so far my faves of all his stuff would be: 1. Boatmans Call (well.. maybe cuz it was the first & i had a bit of a passionate love affair withit 2. Let Love In.. nostrills n all! 3. First Born They're all quite different/ contrasting Ok- im off to get my eardrums caressed by 16HP- Low Estate should go very well after FBID Thanx K!
