Get a Dell, or an IBM/Lenovo. Actually there are so many good brands out there - Fujitsu, Toshiba (I personally haven't had good experience with Acer).
And features to look for depend on the use. If you'll be doing a lot of travelling don't get anything bigger than a 15.4" display cause they tend to be heavy, but if you do code or graphics (like I do) a big display is a must. I'd say it's good to have at least 4GB of RAM so Win7 (I recommend 64-bit) can run effortlessly and a video card that has its own separate memory (i.e. not shared) and has 1MB RAM. As for processor, a minumum of Core i3 should do it. Hard drives are big enough to all laptops, I think.
Hope this helps.

It does, thanks.
I'm considering a Samsung on sale at Staples- its not the cheapest but it has a huge multi touch pad like a PowerBook. 6 GB memory and a HDMI out, so will suit my needs nicely.

My Dell turns 4 this week. Still running like a dream, but it had to go in for repairs a couple of times (I fried the video card twice being mean to it).
I've never had any issues with Samsung products.
Core i3 or above. 4+ GB RAM Depending what you use it for, consider a dedicated graphics card. I find 13" to be a perfect size for a laptop, but that's subjective. I wouldn't splurge on one with a huge hard drive. I have a 1TB external on my home network, and a 500GB travel size with media that I carry with me when I need it. I prefer the LED screens (I think they're mostly LED these days, though it was the exception when I got mine).
Check the warranties available. All brands run into issues from time to time, and laptop batteries are well known for dropping dead unexpectedly.

I bought a Samsung today. Not the exact one I was looking at before- but a slightly cheaper one that happened to have an Intel processer and 6 GB RAM and a 500 MB HD.
Its 15". I like a larger laptop. I don't travel with it a lot, and I am excited about having a number pad on my keyboard. I also like the big multi-touch touchpad on this machine.
It was about $500 with taxes. Trying to figure out how to set up my network settings so I can start grabbing files from the old laptop, and it doesn't help that that one is Vista and this one is Windows 7... (The USBs are dead on it, so I can't use my external drive to transfer stuff.)

If you get a hard drive enclosure (~$20), you could pull the old computer's hard drive out and transfer everything over via USB. Then, you could continue using the old hard drive as an external also.

Why a new Spiderman origins as Sam Raini already did it with Tobey McGuire ? Is the movie really Amazing ?? bah... my love for super heroes still... but when a good story has actually stuck to the Marvel Stan Lee original story, why another one I'd rather a story about Warren worthington 3 who was forsaken...!!

I've only heard very good things about the new Spiderman movie, I'm looking forward to it! And I like that we get to see Gwen Stacey, she's so important to the Spiderman story, but they just skipped her in the Tobey films to get to Mary Jane

On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being very and 1 being not at all, how pretentious is it to try an pronounce Vincent Van Gogh's name correctly?
I ask because I just discovered that a good chunk of Britain pronounces it "Van Goff" and I've always heard it pronounced "Van Go" so it seems like no one is really trying which makes it seems very pretentious. Then again, not even trying to pronounce someone's name correctly, especially Vincent Van Gogh's, seems like kind of a dick move. Then again, trying to pronounce that name correctly for a non-Dutchman is ridiculous. I'm at an impasse. The reaction I'm getting from most of my friends is "That's not how you pronounce his name?" So... that's not a good sign.

Correct them! Go ahead and learn it the right way. Try and find something on a Dutch site cus there's no way I can explain it phonetically. The old, hard g.. good luck. It's like the "ch" in Loch Ness.

Good advice I think. If I remember correctly I think that when I was preparing to visit Dutchland flutterbutter described it being pronounced as "Van Jacht", which in hindsight makes sense as equally as it is hilarious.

Why is everyone getting mariied and having babies these days? My facebook newsfeed looks like a cross between a wedding magazine and whatever-magazine-that-has-to-do-with-mums-and-babies (I really don't have a fucking clue what either would be called.... Bride? Baby?).

My husband & I got married after 13 years of being together (by a judge in a courthouse), and are one of the few couples in our group of friends who don't have kids and never wanted any....

I love this place Anyway, I‘m a bit swamped at work, not a deskjob and I check mail and try to have a social life when I commute. Silly question: I want to go to London in August. Probably on my own. My friends want to stay one night. Seeing as this will be my only holiday this year, I‘d prefer to stay longer. So any tips for a traveller alone so I don‘t pay through the nose? Or a clever, fast way to have a full day in London without having to book a hotelroom, for me and two friends.

Well, it seems all the cool people are going to London. Which places do you want to visit? Exactly. So much hotness in one place I don't really know, I've already been in March this year and I've visited quite a lot of places as my friend had to work and I've been on my own most of the time. I've done the usual touristy stuff, and many museums. I absolutely loved running around by myself though, I should do this more often. But this time we're going to do the Harry Potter studio tour!!!! I am incredibly excited for this, I think it will be the greatest day of my life I cannot wait, I'm such a child Have you been before?

Anyone know about an affordable record player, preferably with build in speakers? Yes, I know the sound quality probably will be less than stellar with built in speakers, but I don't have a lot of money, and my entire stereo still resides in Copenhagen. And I'm in Berlin with nothing but a laptop and an iPod (with standard earphones). I'm starved for decent audio, really.
