Addressing one of the underlying questions that have plagued scientists for years, and tie it to motherhood. Nature versus Nurture, and which has more of an effect on our lives? Betty Rollins believes that Nurture, at least in regard for maternal urges, is the only reason why woman want children. She presents a valid argument, not that she proves her point to the reader, but instead wavers an opinion, something honestly much more complicated. Who needs motherhood? The question put forth obviously enough in the title, but first what is a need? A need is a necessity, something that we cannot live without, In her essay Betty quotes a biologist that gives the basic message that we do not die if we don’t have babies, therefore no one needs motherhood. With in two paragraphs she has answered the question put forth, and further goes on to explain why we think that motherhood is instead of a want, a whim, or a fancy, a requirement of women in the human race.

A badge of honor, keeping up with the joneses, following in the footsteps of your mother, instincts, religion, all reasons to want a baby, a psychological pull to create in your womb a carrier of your genetics. But no more than that, there is no biological need; nothing imprinted on your mind during gestation, nine months of floating in a sack does not create an inherent need to repeat the cycle. Having a good mother only creates the ability to become one, not the need. Having multiple children shows wealth but does not create food on the table of the starving. Having children is not only unnecessary as it turns out, but in this age of modern medicine in which we have such a low infant mortality rate, it is counterproductive. At most a privilege to the rich, at least a curse to the poor.

Freud - Oedpius complex Lacan - the mirror stage, the subject and the signifier Melaine Kliein is always good to look at Child psychology is worth looking into, esp Piaget and his stages. Nature versus nurture is a huge debatable issue and is lot to handle in one essay.....

This be the Verse
They fuck you up, your mum and dad. They may not mean to, but they do. They fill you with the faults they had And add some extra, just for you.
But they were fucked up in their turn By fools in old-style hats and coats, Who half the time were soppy-stern And half at one another's throats.
Man hands on misery to man. It deepens like a coastal shelf. Get out as early as you can, And don't have any kids yourself.
Phillip Larkin
