Nah, not really. He could sing the text from the back of cereal packets, and I'd still want to listen.

Didn't bother me on Whiskey for the Holy Ghost, didn't bother me when the Screaming Trees did it on Dust (although it's my least fave ST album), I even like the Gary Heffern thing which is basically a C&W hymn, doesn't bother me now.
I don't believe in much myself, but I didn't believe from the other perspective when I was 19 and listening to Slayer, Danzig and the likes (and still do on occasion), I just liked hearing other people go on about it and still do if the tune that carries it is worth listening to. Good music's good music, whether he's singing about Jesus or footwear-sporting bears.

Have to admit that I prefer sneaker-wearing bears over Jesus, though..

I'm so hoping they do Sneakers tonight. Well, could always shout a request. Not going to happen.. but if it did, that would make my year. (Well.. month, at least.)

oh they will, it will be the encore ;D does it bother you folks that Mark is singing these christian religious hymns? most of the folks here act like hip starbucks scholars and claim to be agnostic, heathen, non denominational, athiest (sp?), satanist whatevers....does it bother you in the least? good question c0mrade. Overall i like the religious gospely songs lanegan's done. I find there's something very emotional about gospel. I sometimes wonder if it appeals to me because there are signs of some religious upbringing hidden away in the far corners of my memory. My parents were pretty much anti-religion, my sister and i were brought up to believe religion has done more wrong than good worldwide. I have memories of hymn-singing on the back of a bus, of bedtime prayers, a nightly visit to some little church, and i know one or two children's hymns by heart. My dad buggered off when i was about 14 so i never got to ask him about this, but i did ask my mum and she's always denied the presence of religion in my upbringing. She denies it so rigorously it always makes me feel i am onto something. I know there's some secrets in my childhood, a family feud, family members that did time. I don't know much about it and there's no one else to ask but my mum. She's slowly beginning to tell me more about her past, she's given up on a few family secrets so maybe one day i will find out about the role religion played in her life, and mine. Woah, how's that for an answer. I was just gonna post a quick reply ("no it doens't really bother me but if lanegan sings that jesus song one more time i will have to get on stage and kick him"). Um, i like some gospel, bought that brother where art thou soundtrack for it too ;D but the jesus song should be banned and the gary heffern song should be distroyed.

The real question is how did a serious Mark topic end up on this side of the board?
Mark's subject matter really does not matter to me as long as it is not the phone book. It is the singer I enjoy.

Yep, same here... at least I'd rather listen to Mark singing the phone book instead of certain current bands 'trying' to sing their heart out (won't waste time typing them now). Back to topic... it really doesn't bother me. The way he does it is enchanting so I don't mind switching to these songs after the rocking ones. I appreciate the diversity his discography shows. If that's what he wants to sing about at a certain period of time... I'm not religious at all (and I can't even remember the last time I entered a church) but I do respect others' beliefs as far as they're not religious extremists.

Eep. :/ (I'm justified in going off at a tangent, as this thread's in 'all the rest'.. )

I think for the most part, Mark has only occasionally spoiled us with gems like Skeletal History. But when it really comes down to it, I think Lanegan is more about the gospel tunes

I admire him for doing religious hymns even though it does seem to be something that isn't always pleasing for some fans... I love the ones mentioned as such cause it does bring a feeling of faith to me... Lanegan as sinner sings the saint brings much more than just a good tune... The whole Soulsavers album brings a feel of religious romanticism of the past...

I'm agnostic with a sacred heart tattooed on my back. ba ha ha. I have read the Bible and am definately interested in the story-telling aspect of it and the iconography... I'm a sucker for those History Channel "Mysteries of the Bible" type shows. Maybe those medieval paintings from Art History class made an impression on me...
I do listen to other artists who sing about Christian themes and it doesn't bother me at all. There's a long tradition of music like that.

Not to sound picky or anything but I do believe it is a non-denominational prayer tent (religion not certain of which I'll watch it again laters) in the Revival video so I did find that inclusion a bit confusing for this question...

...and Mark isn't/hasn't ever been religious or tried it on for size? Not quite sure what your point is. I mean many interviews have mentioned his interest in it before...he's not quite a bible-bashing Billy Graham but I don't think you could call him an atheist or an agnostic either. I thought you were asking what us lot thought of the frequent religious references in his songs. Me myself I'm a santa-worshipping dyslexic but I have no bother with his lyrics...

I too am perplexed by the point. Are you (J. Pizzle) saying that Mark is not religious and you are offended by his lyrics because he should not be signing them?
Or, are you offended by Cash's lyrics because he was religious?

I'm offended by Cash's lyrics because he never shot a man in Reno.

no not really, but in the case of Cash he was openly a very religious man (obviously he had his faults like the rest of us) and hosted a religious variety show in the 70's so for cash it was not just an act or something different to do. In Marks case I am just curious is this just seemed like a fun project to do or if he there is more conviction behind it, is this conviction new found or deeply buried? its almost like a death knell for Christians in pop music and I just wondered how his fans view this

I was brought up Catholic and for a long time i knew nothing else because in a way i was kept isolated from any contradictions to it. After a while cracks started to show and at the moment I'm sadly atheist. I say sadly cos i admire people who can so completely put their belief in something that seems fictional to me. I've lost friends, had (small) drug problems and been very lost and always felt that if i was still catholic i could have a comfort in my life and support through those things. So when i hear Mark sing gospels I feel comforted in a way, i love the way they sound and i love the lyrics
