i think, quite honestly, this thread has generated more serious musical conversation than any others on here in recent history.

i dont think there are that many Ulver fans here either, but hey ho. them's the breaks, kiddo! I dont spend all day debating their greatness ..only because no one is interested in them / aware of them enough to debate with. ive had many responses to this thread, and in turn, this has generated more debate and conversation. i bet you've mentioned ulver more times on this forum than ive mentioned britters. i will stop soon, honestly. she is very interesting though. that's the problem. she is constantly newsworthy. marilyn monroe, james dean, princess diana, jimi hendrix, courtney love, kurt cobain, etc etc.. she is tragic and deeply flawed, like all of those people. she is universal, like all of those people. and she is on that level in terms of fame and cultural significance.

She's not newsworthy at all, unless TMZ is news. Now you say she is better than Jimi Hendrix.

I think she's a media built musician, unlike Hendrix or Cobain. More like the Kooks, she's practically just a new japanese invention. Teen flirt, and when that didnt work she went bad and sold even more.

Now you say she is better than Jimi Hendrix. i didnt say that at all though, did i? you obviously cant see past your musical bigotry. here it is again.. read it slowly.. try to digest.. marilyn monroe, james dean, princess diana, jimi hendrix, courtney love, kurt cobain, etc etc.. she is tragic and deeply flawed, like all of those people. she is universal, like all of those people. and she is on that level in terms of fame and cultural significance. do you see? i dont see the words 'better than better hendrix' anywhere. maybe you should step outside yourself, step outside your views on music for a moment, and re-read the posts ive made on this thread. you might find yourself enlightened somewhat. i find it hard to believe that you're all so prepared to criticise an artist for an album you haven't even considered listening to, while at the same time you moan when a reviewer thinks Dulli sings 'Who Will Lead Us?'

Teen flirt, and when that didnt work she went bad and sold even more. Hendrix and Cobain both sold records on account of their looks. it also, quite certainly, helped them get record deals in the first place. the fact that Nirvana helped introduce a new 'trend' is quite interesting too. all im saying is that all of you could do with stepping outside and looking for the beauty, art and talent it takes to do things you don't like.. which is just as much as you'll find in things you do like. the provoking of thought. here is a statement: britney spears is a hugely-talented pop performer with a personal life and problems that make her all the more interesting. .. how sad that no one has chosen to pick up on the big points i made in some of my earlier posts, in favour of the 'i dont like what she does' reactionary nonsense i was trying to get you all to step away from.

classical music is generally preferred by well-off, older people who wish to impose their intellect and exclude less-educated people in much the same way that indie fans choose to exclude 'pop' fans. do you see many people dressed in punk clothing listening to classical or opera? I'm someone who has the same hard-on for Beethoven and Mozart that you do for Britney. If I had to choose only one genre of music that I could listen to for the rest of my life, it would have to be--sorry rock 'n' roll, sorry blues, sorry hip-hop--classical music. I think the association between classical music and boring wealthy yuppie prudes is unfortunate. I also dispute that one has to be an intellectual to enjoy classical music. I find that classical music speaks directly to the emotions, and one doesn't need to understand key signatures or four-part vocal harmonies to feel it. There may be many unfortunate assholes who use classical music as a prop for their snobbishness, but classical music has also been a touchstone in many popular movies, has been sampled in hip-hop songs, and was Charles Bukowski's life soundtrack... and if anyone ever was the opposite of an uptight upper-crust cocktail-party-goer, it was Bukowski. I find that classical music has the capacity to get much more intense than rock music ever could. Perhaps that's why Bukowski dug it. There are also certain emotions that are harder to evoke in a rock and roll song than in a classical piece, namely the sublime and the heroic. Classical music also tends to be more meditative, but not in the boring, drippy way of New Age music. The greatest passions, the deepest peace, you can feel it directly if a good set of musicians is playing the right piece. Not that dissimilar to rock and roll in that way. And I find that listening to both genres creates an interesting commentary between the similar themes that do crop up in the things I like from both. I wish everyone at least had the chance to explore classical music without any of the unfortunate prejudices there are around it. Classical music should be everybody's music. And funnily enough, classical CDs are among the cheapest CDs you can find given the lack of copyright malarkey that exists for musicians that have been dead for centuries.
