Frankly, I would be mortified if my CD collection was a bunch of burned CDs. I only like the real thing.

why is it ok for bands to give out their stuff when it benefits them ? I can remember getting a letter from the metallica boyz saying give out tape to anyone whom you think would want to hear this....and this is not an attack on them per se..................and this was the kill em' all days

Personally, i'm against it. whether it be legal downloading or pirating. I agree with what Fields said, but there's a lot more to it for me. I know lots of people try to justify stealing by complaining about the high cost of CDs and how the bands really want you to steal their music because they hate their record companies, but that is just BS in my opinion.
The simple fact is that the music business IS a business, just like so many others. Like it or not, it exists so that people can make money.
But someone's created a tool to enable you to steal music, so you steal it. Yay for you.
I have lots more to say on this, but dont have the energy right now.

There are many bands I would not listen to if I had to buy their music. On the other hand, there are many bands I could not listen to if I did not download their music. Being young, I have not had the opportunity until recently to order things with a credit card, so using that arguement against me is worthless. I do order CDs now, I do it quite often.
I generally buy what I truly like. There are certain musicians I believe in supporting, especially if they're doing everything themselves and 95% of my money isn't going to a record label.
There is no definate for me. I love Tom Waits, I will buy him albums. I love Lanegan, I will buy his. I love Nirvana, but I realized that I should not buy every "new" album that is released with one "new" song on it. I acquired two Twilight Singers albums for free, and I know that I would not go out and buy their albums, I'd probably download them if I wanted to listen to them.
Things like myspace exist and I can hear a band there, but one song off an album is no guarantee. Bands with one good song on an album are the ones that die.
I have to pick and choose. I love listening to new music, and there's a huge list of things I'm still going through, but I cannot buy everything. I can't buy an album just to hear a band, or because they have one song I like. It's not feasible. I'm 20, and between CDs and vinyl I have somewhere around 300 albums.
Oh, and CDs are generally more expensive* in Canada, or extremely difficult to find.
*I've paid $30 for an ordinary Fantomas CD and $26 for Field Songs

I love Tom Waits, I will buy him albums. that's awfully nice of you, but i think he can afford to buy albums himself. and dude, it sounds so desperate.. like you're trying to buy your way into his affections with these album gifts you speak of. if he loves you back, he won't care how many albums you buy him. maybe you should try downloading one for him and putting it on a CDR. (god, i cant believe how much mileage im getting out of a single, beautiful typo. i could go on all day, seriously. this is the most excited, nay, aroused, i have been on this forum in a long time.)
