From Los Angeles Times: lat.ms/d4JEamBen Gibbard and Mark Lanegan to join John Cale for performance of 'Paris 1919' at Royce Hall On Thursday, John Cale, composer, producer, songwriter, and cellist/bassist for the Velvet Underground, will be performing his classic 1973 album "Paris 1919" at UCLA's Royce Hall. We've just received news that the concert will be featuring some guests, and the first two names to trickle out are Death Cab for Cutie/Postal Service singer Ben Gibbard and singer Mark Lanegan, best know for his work with Screaming Trees and Queens of the Stone Age. Those not familiar with Cale's gorgeous, introspective "Paris 1919" are missing a quiet masterpiece. Recorded in Los Angeles with most of the members of the band Little Feat (along with producer Chris Thomas), the concept album, about the signing of the Treaty of Versailles at the end of World War I (but don't let that scare you away) has become a cult classic among fans of orchestral pop. Cale and guests will perform the album during the first set, and, according to the press release, in the second will "showcase his modern side, deconstructing classics and performing new material." We'll keep you posted on any new guest announcements.

Mark Lanegan - "an aged Jim Morrison to make the over-39 ladies swoon"... I'm not sure if I think this is funny or just cruel!

It's a cheesy and silly quote. Seriously cheesy and silly, and I happen to be under 39 and he makes me swoon-y. I'm a little tired of reading these all-the-same phrases, reviews and articles saying that Lanegan looks like Morrison, sounds like Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave, etc. Some weeks ago, Guardian newspaper tried to compared him and Isobel to Big Bad Wolf and Little Red Hood. How ridiculous.

Well, newspapers are full of a lot of absolute rubbish about everything else, so I don't suppose we should be too surprised when their music reviews are lazy and stupid, too.

Re: Big White Cloud
Could whoever is able to rip this please contact me privately, or I will attempt to do it myself on my days off. My 2 cents: this version is OLD, from the same sessions in '99 as ITCOY if we are to infer from Mark Boquists myspace post about Don't Forget Me / his history with MLB
So, this version may cease to exist, esp if Mark were to re-record his vocals or the song
