Just got back from Mark and Isobel's first Australian show, which was great. No surprises, the set list was pretty standard - chapeuzinho managed to appropriate a copy, so I'll leave it to her to let you know what was on it. Isobel was a bit scatty and complained of jet-lag. The band seemed ok, and Mark was sublime as always. The crowd had its fair share of drunk bogans, which was surprising as his solo concert last year was not like that at all. You know the kind, douchebags singing along and talking loudly to their mates and on their phones during the songs. But it was a great night and even though Isobel is my least favourite of Mark's collaborations I really enjoyed it and glad I saw her. Unfortunately I was running late and missed Red Ghost, so I can't comment on her. I managed to get all the merchandise that was ordered through me. I'll be contacting everyone individually soon to get your addresses (and money!). I met Mark afterwards, which was a huge bonus, and got some ok pictures of him I think which I'll post soon. I asked him if he's doing another Soulsavers album and he said no, they're doing their next one with Dave Gahan, and that he'd heard it and it was amazing (or that he'd heard that it was amazing, not sure which). I told him about the plight of foreigners wanting to buy his bobblehead, but having to pay $35 postage. I said there was even a Facebook page dedicated to it, www.facebook.com/pages/Campaign-to-bring-the-Mark-Lanegan-bobblehead-to-European-shores/191901197530421, but he said there wasn't really anything he could do about it. He joked that he wouldn't buy one, and I said I didn't believe him...I was sure that he had them all lined up along his mantlepiece, bobbling away, which made him smile. As expected, a great night! Oh, and I forgot to say......he signed EVERYTHING that I bought! I told him he didn't have to, but he did anyway. And the queue was really long, I bet he had writer's cramp by the end of it.

Sounds like a good fun night (despite the drunk idiots) thanks for getting the merch (and SIGNED well done on that one!), so very much appreciated. ;D I know Mark's not exactly in touch with his fans in terms of visiting the forum (unless he's a lurker!) but he probably realised you were doing his fans a wonderful favour.

Is it just me or has Mark been wearing that exact same jacket for about a year straight now? That's great that you got to meet him and have a chat with him! No new Soulsavers collaboration sounds like good news to me. Bring on the solo album

Unfortuately the review is fairly spot on. The Audience was awful, so awful I wanted to cry at points, the sound mix was the worst I have ever heard and Isobel was tired, jetlagged and more distracted then I have ever seen her.
Lanegan was himself. We're not expecting chit chat. I'm not sure why he still has the music stand, doesn't seem to refer to it. Maybe he just doesn't want Isobel to have all the toys.
Even Backburner, for which I had high expectations for sizzle and burn, was flat. So disappointing.
It was a thrill to meet Lanegan, and I'm glad I saw them perform together now the partnership is at an end, but overall it was a big anticlimax.
I have never had an audience ruin such an anticipated event before. Such a shame.
But, I will add, watching March wiggle along, yes I think in his special way he was "dancing", to the songs was hilarious.

Thats a real shame i feel for you some audience members need shooting . I saw them at the Barbican and they were fantastic (lots of chatting, laughing, smiles, good crowd etc) as far better proved from the several audince recordings as opposed to the offcial release which cuts a lot of the songs and banter out. Isobel is rather inconsistent and to the uninitiated Mark does look kinda bored i suppose.

Well I took along a virgin to all the Melb gigs. He really really liked the solo show. The National Theatre show was good but tonights show at the Thornbury Theatre was the bomb!!! Still not much interaction - Mark seems to save some for the signings where he is a real treasure . I will post the setlist which was the same for both shows Isobel said. Back Burner was brill - I did shoot some stuff and hope to post that once I get home. Tonights show was like a club or cabaret atmosphere - we were all sat at tables but that didnt detract and the audience was very respectful and she also forgot to introduce the band. The sound was excellent I thought!! Anyway we will all wait with baited breath for January which is when Mark told me that the record would be out!!

Very nice review, good to see someone in the press who "gets it" with their performances.

Here are the 2 reviews from SITG from Rave and Time Off street press...."Today’s answer to Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood, Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan sing their way through a captivating set at the sadly-under populated McLennan tent. “Those Architects, they’re so loud!” the elfin-voiced Scotswoman comments on the Mix Up noise-bleed as old-time Ramblin’ Man Mark keeps a sullen face. Nonetheless, they’re a true music lover’s heaven tonight." and from Time Off...."Isobel Campbell And Mark Lanegan are a pair that each possess a rich performance history and though there’s no doubting their onstage chemistry which oozes sweet yet rugged appeal, the festival stage seems a scary prospect to them as they continually comment on the noise bleed from Architecture In Helsinki. Campbell sits and stands as her cello duties permit, offering the sweetest of womanly voices to Lanegan’s indecently masculine bass vocal, which comes across like the Cookie Monster’s deep rumble in Something To Believe."
