It's Fiona Brice's The Separate project that's been in the pipeline for ages. Mark covers the Cure's "Close to Me" on it IIRC.
I presume this is a promo, as the release (it's not available yet - supposed be next month though, although it's been put back a few times) is iTunes only. It should fairly easily be sourced for a lot less elsewhere as soon as more promo discs get put on auction sites etc instead of being used by the recipients to promote the bloody record in the first place...

Maybe the title of this thread should be edited to reflect the accurate title "Close to Me", not the MLB song "Come to Me."

This is from Fiona's FB site:

Update on 'The Separate' album for those of you interested: the powers that be have decided that release will now be scheduled for Oct/Nov. I wish it were available right now but it's out of my hands! I have at last received a CD copy so it does exist, I promise! Sorry for the wait.

October's gone (well nearly) so I hope we will be able to finally get this song in the next few weeks!

It's a very nice track. No trace of The Cure on it, thank god.

I got a copy off ebay for little more than the cost of shipping (a few have popped up there now). I had no intentions of announcing such auctions for fear of fierce competition. The seller was "amoebablowout".

Interesting... there's a copy of it on Amazon for.... drumroll..... $76. I guess I'll have a peek at Ebay.
There's no direct way to buy from the label? Or are there only promo copies out right now?

Hence the ebay trawling.
I think it's only promos with an indefinite (including the possibility of never) official release, most likely due to label shenanigans.
And speaking of promos, I hear those of Blues Funeral are making rounds to reviewers?

Well, nothing on Ebay (on either front). Hopefully a release of The Separate thing will come through soon. :/

I got mine for $0.01 Great record (Martha Wainwright's U2 cover is my current favourite track, although of course Mark's is brilliant as well, even if it is a bit strange), but the CD spine showing 2010 probably indicates that whatever's held it back for a year so far is probably capable of holding it back for longer

Ha.
Not only did I have to look him up, it's the worst song on there.

Placebo, right? I can't stand them but I understand they have quite the following. I'm sure the Placebo fans are saying similar things about Mr Lanegan.

Presumably Brian gets a strong billing in the PR blurb as Fiona Brice, whose album it is, is a member of Placebo His contribution is the least "different" on there, which for me makes it the least initially interesting, although I was a fan of the original when it came out so do enjoy the parallels in the accurate way he sings it (which is a greater success than Patrick Wolf's occasional Phil Lynott impersonation). My favourites on there keep changing, Mark's song is a constant, but I'm also currently drawn to the very sexy take on Ghost Town and a Souvenir that is barely recognisable from the original. It's weird though that these discs are all coming from the same seller, as if someone's decided to not send them out for promo purposes; that'd explain the 100% lack of press interest

Nope - as the album is being held up for legal reasons, parking it on the Internet might end up being a bit lawyer-baiting, not to mention unfair on the people fighting somewhat expensively to get it released.

My apologies for coming across so negative there, especially as I say it from a position where I have the CD already... Releasing collaborative works is such a pain nowadays - you'd think with new and exciting models of doing business within the music industry in the 21st century would make these sort of things more prevalent. Instead, several labels seem to be doing their damnedest to stop them happening at all. This one in particular has been in limbo for at least a year (going off the copyright date on the spine) and has been a it of an ongoing thing for much longer... It was first mentioned here in 2009 when Ed Harcourt mentioned that he'd recorded his track (A Ramones cover) a few years previous to that, so the project's been bouncing about for at least half a decade. Thankfully, a few have snuck out at least so as a worst case (ie, if legalities/requests for unreasonable amounts of money prove too much of an obstacle), the songs exist outside the usual sealed vaults and so they'll find their way into the hands of those who want to hear them. In the meantime, Setanta isn't the hugest label on the planet so it would be unfair to weaken its bargaining position when negotiating royalties to the performers, original writers and the contributing vocalists (plus whichever labels decide to exercise their right to charge for permission) to make sure that there's something left from all that to make it worthwhile to put out the record in the first place. The saddest part about the promo CDs being out there is that there is little to no promotion; no news anywhere other than on here and on Fiona's sites, no reviews, no airplay
