theobelisk.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=81929Mark Lanegan has teamed up with multi-instrumentalist Duke Garwood to release Black Pudding via Ipecac Recordings on Apr. 16. Lanegan, never one to shy away from unique collaborations, has previously worked with Belle & Sebastian's Isobel Campbell, The Afghan Whigs' Greg Dulli and as a member of The Screaming Trees, Soulsavers and Queens of the Stone Age. "Duke Garwood is one of my all time favorite artists," said Lanegan. "Working with him has been one of the best experiences of my recording life." Lanegan and Garwood met a few years ago while playing on the same bill and Garwood was again a frequent opener on Lanegan's recent European tour. Garwood has often been described in the UK press as Lanegan's "spiritual cousin across the Atlantic waters." He is praised in his home country as a master bluesman, with The Quietus saying "The combination of Garwood's murmured vocals and the sound he gets out of his guitar - which ranges from a rolling, loose finger-picking to shuddering howls of feedback - has a hypnotic effect" and The Mirror dubbing him as "London's leading exponent of the wheezy broke-down blues." Lanegan's most recent release is Blues Funeral, which Mojo extolled as an "outstanding piece of work," Paste said "his fearlessness remains devastatingly affecting" and Dusted said Blues Funeral was one of "his strongest, and certainly his oddest, albums." Black Pudding was recorded at Pink Duck Studios in Burbank, Calif. by Justin Smith (Tegan and Sara, The Hives) and mixed by his Queens of the Stone Age associate Alain Johannes. Black Pudding track listing: 1. Black Pudding 2. Pentacostal 3. War Memorial 4. Mescalito 5. Sphinx 6. Last Rung 7. Driver 8. Death Rides a White Horse 9. Thank You 10. Cold Molly 11. Shade of the Sun 12. Manchester Special

Awesome news, I was hoping this wouldn't end up collecting dust on a shelf somewhere for perpetuity!

Cannot understand what anyone, let alone Mark, sees in this guy. He's just awful. I've seen him twice supporting Lanegan and I honestly would say he was without doubt the most appalling performer I've ever suffered And that includes 25 years attendance at the Edinburgh Festival and Fringe Festival where it's obligatory to see at least one production of unspeakable tosh every year. Before I saw him I would have said the worst thing I'd ever seen was a French dance company called Ballet Atlantique which consisted of a troop of "dancers" doing literally nothing other than building and dismantling a giant bird's nest on stage to a soundtrack of noises recorded by placing a microphone in undergrowth, which lasted 90 minutes and it was still less tuneless, charmless and mind numbingly boring than 10 minutes of Duke Garwood droning on.

Wow, this should be great. Interesting to see it on Ipecac too. Think I have about 30% of everything they've ever released!

On the contrary, Duke Garwood is fantastic.

I agree, ive seen him support Mr lanegan at Brudenell and i thought he was very good, the effect and sound he got from that guitar was something i had'nt heard for a while performed live. Awful, tuneless charmless and boring i think is a bit harsh!!

Awful, tuneless charmless and boring i think is a bit harsh!! No it isn't. It's my opinion and as valid as yours. I thought he was dreadful. 30 minutes of tuneless droning with no discernible difference between songs and no stage presence whatsoever. I was extremely bored both times (less so the second as I had my Kindle with me). I could be harsher, I was actually embarrassed for him as it was so dire. In a long, long history of attending cultural events high and low of all genres and art forms he's well within the top 10 of the least enjoyable I've ever seen.

I've seen Garwood play really well (Union Chapel and especially the aforementioned Brudenell gig), he has a good chemistry with Mark (he joined him onstage in Manchester for a great version of Miserlou that me & the people around me originally thought was Because Of This), and I've witnessed some indifferent and bloody awful performances too. It'll be interesting to hear what they've done together, hoping it's more like the Lynchy atmospherics of the better shows than the mogadon mumblings of the not-so-good ones. The involvement of Alain Johannes soothes the bigger doubts I had about this pairing.
EDIT: Great album title though, naming a record after the Northern Breakfast Delicacy of what is essentially a fried scab evokes all manner of strange imagery...

I thought he was a crashing bore with no redeeming features. "Mumbling monotone" describes him well

I knew this would happen. I had a feeling he was going release something on Ipecac in the future.
I haven't seen or heard Garwood as of yet, due to arriving at shows after the support.

I didn't know Duke Garwood, but due to the mixed comments here, I started to look him up. First I watched Garwood on youtube live as the support of Mark Lanegan, but I have to be honest I actually maybe didn't 'cause I only listened to it 10 sec. and made my decision. Yes not really a coherent performance, but there was still something. And scince there are artists who sound much better on a record then live, I figured, I listened to a studio recorded song, Summer Gold: www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6uBHpqnKBwI like it, there is a beautiful melody and a nice emotion in his voice, and the guitar sound is fine too. I think this is going to be a beautiful combination, I'm quite exited actually. With the more thorough/firm/steady/solid (couldn't find the right translation for the Dutch word doortastend...) and articulate Lanegan, I think it's going to be beautiful. It's going to be great anyway, after all it's Mark Lanegan. In my mind everything that Mark did, except for that Slash song, is beautiful.

I've seen Duke support Mark on 4 or 5 occasions now, & while I certainly wouldn't call myself a fan, I have grown to appreciate him to some extent.
I'm really optimistic & excited about this release & I think it will be one of Mark's more interesting collaborations.
Bring on da 'Black Pudding'!
