I'm sure it's been discussed here, but I could not find any answers to why it was never released on vinyl, or if there are any plans to do so in the future. Can someone please direct me toward the thread if this was covered already?

No idea if there are any plans but I remember reading someone asking lanegan about it at a meet and greet after a show and he said he didn't realize it wasn't available. Would be nice to have on vinyl for sure. There probably will be some songs on the best of that's coming out soon, assuming there will be a vinyl release of that.

I find myself a bit surprised that Sub Pop hasn't taken advantage in the upswing in Mark's popularity and released (or rereleased, as the case may be) his catalog with them on vinyl for the audiophiles.

Would be great to have it as long as it's from an analog master, not that digital crap.

I think bad times for Sub Pop and worse times for vinyl sales in 2001 possibly put the mockers on Field Songs' 12" edition the first time around. Sadly, SP seem to have also gotten bored with their Deluxe reissue series and rarely repress stuff once it's gone - Whiskey For The Holy Ghost for example is 20 years old this year and there is no physical format available from Sub Pop at all (a quick peep at Amazon UK shows that they have 1 CD copy left in stock, although it's part of a 2 for £9 deal this week..).
It'd be great if someone else rocks up and pays to licence a pressing (Sub Pop used to licence everything to everyone back in the day so this shouldn't be too hard) but vinyl selling is still a bit of a gamble outside of Record Store Day - the 200-only Sweet Apple yellow 7" he did back in January is still available to buy from the label :/

True, and I do have the Sweet Apple 7", but I would think that only more obsessive fans of Mark and J. Mascis, like those that want to collect ALL of their stuff, would have bought that anyway. I used to be a pretty big Dinosaur Jr. fan, but I had no idea who Sweet Apple was until Wish You Could Stay. In other words, I would blame their poor sales on the fact that Sweet Apple are nobodies, and if there was a digital release I could see a lot of fans of Mark and J forego the vinyl and spend only a dollar or two on the files instead. Many fans, including me, regard Field Songs as Mark's best work. It's a major album in a well-known artist's discography. Put it on colored vinyl, and even casual fans of Mark will want a copy. And like you said, release it on record store day and I think it would be one of the top sellers. Put a sticker on there noting the musicians who appear on that album, and you reel even more people in. That's my opinion anyway. And while they're at it, how about a limited run of Last Words? i'd pay for field songs on vinyl. I definitely regard field songs as mark's best album. It means a lot too me on such a personal level, and when it was released it went well with my life.
I don't think I've ever asked this before, but I have a question about Resurrection Song. Who plays the main acoustic guitar part in this recording? The contributing artists are all listed pretty clearly in the liner notes, but nobody is credited as playing acoustic guitar on track 7. Mike Johnson and Ben Shepherd both get credit for electric guitar, but I am sure that is acoustic guitar that is being played throughout the song.
Anyone who's ever looked at the liner notes for field songs can see how detailed the contributing artist section is, so I've often wondered since nobody is given credit, is it possible that Mark was playing guitar? (it is a very easy song for any guitarist to learn!)

Maybe it's all electric but with some acoustic effects.

As for Field Songs on Vinyl..Hell yeah...long overdue. As for Last Words on vinyl, I remember Barrett stating in an interview that it would happen, but I guess there wasn't as much interest. That would also be a great RSD release. I say DO IT!

Yes yes YES to hearing a vinyl pressing of Field Songs - only from the master tapes of course. I believe it was recorded on tape so what better medium to hear it. At 42mins, it'd fit nicely on one slab of wax. I would suggest that it'd be worth petitioning MusicOnVinyl to do a release. They've done Bubblegum, Trees and QOTSA releases, so Lanegan is definitely on their radar. They've released albums by artists one could argue are far less known than Lanegan. Perhaps if folk here were to spend a minute contacting them and requesting a vinyl version of Field Songs... who knows what might happen. Contact MOV here: musiconvinyl.com/contact

I contacted MOV a few month's ago with a couple of suggestion's for future releases, one of which was 'Field Songs'. I received a very prompt reply, saying that 'Field Songs' was actually on their wish list, so maybe if enough people show an interest it might become a reality. Finger's crossed.

i'd probably buy it from MOV just to own it but i'd much rather have it pressed elsewhere. MOV is shoddy as hell as far as sound quality goes. most of their releases are pressed from digital sources which is a huge nono.

I also would be dead keen to pick this up on vinyl. Have emailed both Sub Pop and MOV in the past, only received a response from MOV similar to what others have posted above..."Don't know when & if this is gonna happen"...maybe they just pull prospective release names out of a hat.
