You can tell Mark wants this tour over. Tonight's set was the shortest yet and he was as disinterested and impatient during the signing session as I've ever seen someone be. Speaking as someone who isn't really a people person myself, I urge you, Mark, please stop doing the signings if you're not enjoying them. Fans are going to come away disappointed or offended. Please, just stop doing them.

I disagree. He was very engaged on stage, moving quite a lot, even making a few comments. At the signing he was perfectly pleasant to me, as always. I asked him to sign a cd for my friend, then gave him a big smile - he smiled right back.

I enjoyed the set, thought Mark was on good form, but it was the shortest ever (same as Union Chapel less Can't Catch The Train and One Hundred Days). It has been a long tour, so wouldn't be surprised if they were all a bit tired of it. Changing the sets might make it less tiring for all!

Please, just stop doing them. I have to disagree too. I thought Mark was the most relaxed I've ever seen him (apart from something that was obviously wrong with the sound or something during the first song) - it was the first time I've ever heard him making jokes during a performance and smiling during the set. His voice has got better throughout the tour too. Yes, the set was shorter but I had assumed this was because he'd performed twice during the same evening? He happily signed my friend's CD and I was standing at the side of the merchandise desk for a few minutes and he seemed happy and relaxed to me.

I thought Mark & the band were in fantastic form once again, & didn't get the impression they were just going through the motions at all, despite this being one of the last gig's of the tour. Mark appeared very relaxed, quipping "Your enthusiasm has been duly noted" at one point to a very appreciative audience. Definitely would have liked them to play longer, but that goes without saying. I'm almost 100% sure I spotted Cypress Grove from the Jeffrey Lee Pierce sessions project at both this & the Union Chapel show too. Had an absolute blast, & loved every second of it.

damn not even Halo of Ashes? The setlist is really fkn short anyways, and now the longest song is cut off, too so that'll be about 70 minutes now?

Have to say that I enjoyed both the Islington shows this past Friday (The one for the Flood Gallery attendees, as well as the main show in the Assembly Hall afterwards. His voice is sounding great at the moment.
The intimate show for the Flood-Gallery attendees was held in the Council Chambers and was very intimate (and as others have said, was also very dark).
It was a little unusual in that Jeff and Lyenn took centre-stage, physically, wich Mark sat off further back on a pew, singing whilst looking at the floor. Have to admit, I was sitting opposite him and beforehand I was a little concerned as he seemed to be fidgeting a little more than normal and scratching his neck a fair bit.
However, his vocal performance was exceptional, and after Jeff looked like he was about to signal the end of the show, Mark actually said 'I think we've got time for one more', which was nice.
About halfway through he said something along the lines of 'sorry for running out on you guys the last time, I thought we were finished....apparently not', so that was also a nice touch.
Setlist for this was (I think I have this right, may have some of the songs in wrong order, if anyone else was there, please feel free to correct me):
One Way Street Cherry Tree Carol Gravedigger's Song One Hundred Days Phantasmagoria Blues You Only Live Twice Mack The Knife Mirrored Bombed When You're Number Isn't Up
The Assembly Hall show itself was good. Setlist was a bit shorter, but he seemed in a better mood than at Flood Gallery/Union Chapel.
Someone previously mentioned him seeming a bit 'drunk', and I have to say he seemed a bit hazy at the signing. I thanked him for the show and putting on the pre-show for the Floor Gallery people, and he looked at me a bit blankly at first (I actually thought he either hadn't heard me or had chosen to ignore me), before looking up afterwards and smiling, saying (with almost a touch of sarcasm) 'well that's just the kind of guy I am'.
Somewhat different to previous encounters.

I tried to meet him twice at Trees shows in the 90's, when he was just hanging out in the club before the show. Told him what a huge fan I was an stuck out my hand (just a reflex when you meet someone I guess). Looked at me like I was handing him a turd I'd found in the street and basically glared at me without saying a word until I slunk away without my handshake. Gary and Van were super cool and Dan Peters shot pool with me and had beers. (Ah, 1991...) Maybe he was hoping I was offering him something back then, I don't know. My buddy had an even more interesting encounter, Mark actually sniffed his palm, gave him the same glare and then went backstage.
I'd say he has warmed up considerably over the years.
