Before any appear, I would strongly suggest to the curious that this is best first-experienced with as little pre-warning as possible... I guess that it's also probably a good idea once this starts hitting doormats across North America to have all "spoilery" discussion in one marked thread so that the Rest Of The World has a choice about spending a month away from the board?

I've absolutely no idea why I capitalised the Rest Of The World like we were some sort of charity football team...

Lovely new front page btw Raeni!
Also, my review was written 5 days ago, but the site I've written it for has been asked not to publish it until the back end of August. Them's the breaks I guess.

I know we'll find out soon, but anyone care to speculate who might be in the "band" this time around? Not just for No Bells on Sundays, but also for Phantom Radio.

I was wondering that myself in addition to whether there are any friends/guest backing vocals. I'm sure the LP will definitely have a few guest spots per the usual. Would be nice to see Mike Johnson and Barrett Martin involved again (like they were on Imitations), although it kind of sounds like both albums (EP and LP) may be more suited to the crew he used with Blues Funeral. I'm sure Jeff Fielder was involved again as they seem to be quite close now and really happy that Johannes is producing again--their chemistry is palpable. As for the sound of the EP as a whole, I'm guessing that it will be a much happier/brighter-vibe from Mark than we're used to (based purely on hearing Sad Lover), but the LP will return to a little darker, more serious territory. Again this is ALL just speculation at this point, hope to find out for sure tomorrow

As a few will have it today, may as well drop the vaguest "review" here, two words per track: Dry Iced - Death Disco No Bells On Sunday - Canadian Boards Sad Lover - You Know! Jonas Pap - Endearingly Silly Smokestack Magic - Emergent Reinvention Also, the title track is one of the best things he's ever come out with. And for the benefit of anyone listening digitally, you'll need your best "what " face at exactly 1:28 of Dry Iced

thanks for the discogs update. (pretty sure the one guy ist called Gorkom, as I searched hard to find it an add it to the Latest Live-CD from Berlin: www.discogs.com/artist/811123-Sietse-van-Gorkom)love to see JP, Lyenn and fellows from the last two tours joined in the studio. why the hell is the one track called Jonas Pap, like the cello player from the last tour (and who seems to appear on this track, too)? can't wait to hear those other four tracks. I'm informed correctly, that they will also be featured on the new album's limited edition, right?

Yep - this EP is the bonus CD of Phantom Radio's deluxe edition.
And, as this is the spoiler thread but without wishing to give too much away, the track Jonas Pap (which features Jonas Pap) is about Jonas Pap. And his hat.

Okay so a few listens in, this will definitely take some time soak in! Sad Lover is by far the most accessible off the bat (for anyone who cares about that); however, the atmospheric tones are immense throughout. The album is also not as "bright" as the lead single may have you believe. Not so much dark either, just really fresh/almost hypnotic or something (hard to describe at the moment). Trying to keep the spoilers to a minimum so others can enjoy a somewhat 'clean' listen.
The title track is certainly something special though, as silence has already pointed out--frikin gorgeous.
This album is meant to be played LOUD, say in the car. I enjoyed it much more cranked in the car as opposed to 'condo-friendly' volume levels. I could also see myself getting straight up stoned to Smokestack Magic.
Give it a few listens and it all starts to soak in. I'm already counting the days till Phantom Radio.....

Was not expecting this to ship so soon. I ordered last Tuesday morning after I saw last Monday's press releases, and here we are Monday evening with new recorded Mark Lanegan music. I feel like it draws really heavily on some of the territory that was alluded to on Blues Funeral stuff like "Harborview Hospital" and "Ode to Sad Disco." It's my understanding that he wants to sort of explore a different facet of his musical tastes and influences here and in that regard it's interesting. As always, his voice is fantastic. I'm sure I'll come around to the instrumentals once I absorb them more. Like 4/5 of the tracks are longer than 5 minutes and are really given quite a bit of room to breathe, and they all create an interesting ambiance.
Honestly, I'm still thrilled that 2014 has proven to be another creatively fecund year for Mr. Lanegan and his cast of players. 2 albums in 2013 was an absolute treat and I certainly wasn't expecting an album/EP combo in 2014.

I feel like this EP lends itself perfectly to a mini-film. It's a self-contained soundtrack; each song feels emblematic of a certain type of scene out of a really rad movie. I feel like I am gonna end up listening to Smokestack Magic on repeat while writing into the wee hours of the morning. Not to mention, 8+ minutes! Golden.
