So...has anyone heard the latest album from Chris Cornell yet? Picked it up this morning, and I've just been casually listening to it throughout the afternoon. So far, it doesn't seem like it's his best work, but it's a massive improvement compared to his last solo outing. What does everyone else think of it so far?

Half way through listening to it now. I think its consistent so far, more acoustic than his previous work which I prefer. A number of stripped back songs too which is good because some of his past work has been overproduced IMO.

Dare I say it, but I think that there's a slight Euphoria Morning vibe to some of the songs?

I found it to be incredibly average after two listens but a few songs have been growing on me. Definitely a step up from Carry On and Scream, although that's not saying much as both were turds. His voice is stellar on it though, strongest I've heard him since the late 90s

I'm liking 'Dead Wishes' Through the Window' and 'Murderer of Blue Skies'.

Not sure how anyone could call Carry On a turd. I would agree about Scream though...

Scream is one of the biggest disappointments I have ever heard. And I'm another one who didn't mind Carry On. Some songs on it were actually pretty decent, in my opinion.

Higher Truth has grown on me considerably since I last posted. It really is a solid effort by Chris, Through the Window and Misery Chain in particular are beautiful numbers. Only songs I really don't care for are Josephine and Circling.
'Turd' may be a bit harsh for Carry On but definitely appropriate for Scream. Carry On just didn't age well for me, leaves a very boring and generic vibe. There are a few songs that hold up well though, especially live like Scar on the Sky. Disappearing Act, Silence the Voices, and She'll Never Be Your Man seem to stand out as well...

I was lucky enough to catch 3 of Chris's Higher Truth shows. He has never disappointed me live. Hearing him bellow out Hunger Strike perfectly brought tears to my eyes. I was so happy to be able to take my 15 year old, who now loves grunge. We have been singing this song to each other ever since:

I thought this album was pretty forgettable at first but it's grown on me quite a bit now. Looking forward to seeing him at Birmingham Symphony Hall in May.

For me, hearing him sing River of Deceit was super haunting. I had no idea he was playing it on that tour and so I was more than surprised.

At the Dublin gig the material from Temple of Dog seemed to get the biggest response rather than any of his solo stuff, it was strange but the "cool" "alternative" nightclubs in Dublin seem to have a soft spot for belting out hunger strike at about midnight just the right time for drunken Sinead to start screaming out the lyrics without any consideration for people with a mile radius of me. I'm pleasantly surprised with the quality of Higher Truth but after spending my hard earned money on Scream I decided to use that album as a basic of comparison.

Personally, with Scream, I feel that Chris would have been better served using an alias or an pseudonym when releasing that album. It would still be a disappointment, but it would have kept Chris Cornell's name somewhat clean. I think that Mark Lanegan sets the standard as far as incorporating electronic influences into his work. Getting back on track though, I think that Higher Truth definitely has grown on me since it came out.

Its a slow grow I'll agree with that, euphoria morning sucked me in straight away and to this day I give it regular listens depending on my mood (nostalgic) I don't know if Higher Truth will end up the same but I definitely am finding more and more to appreciate the more I listen. In relation to scream, I really think it was some sort of mid life crisis (no joke) combined with some record company idea man convincing him that he could "relate" to the young people, that he had something to contribute to that realm of music and he swallowed it hook, line and sinker. Pity, he took and gamble and it did not pay off.

And as a young person, I prefer Euphoria Morning and Higher Truth to Scream, so there's that.

Went to see Chris's gig in Birmingham on Mon, the day after I saw Mark in Leeds, so it was a good bank holiday weekend Really enjoyed both gigs. The Higher Truth album is definitely a grower but still nothing compared Euphoria Morning, but that album had the Alain Johannes magic on I so wish Chris would re-release Scream as an acoustic album because when he does the songs live you can tell that the songs are good I'm just not a fan of the style they were going for on the album.

I've never had a complete listen to Scream but I agree that the live songs sound great acoustic. I'm catching him this summer and I'm sure it will be great as always. Too bad he can't get Alain to open.

I have been hearing Nearly Forgot my Broken Heart in a few bizarre mainstream places, like my surgeon's office. But for the most part, I am shocked how few people know about Chris or even Soundgarden.
