Hey There is a poll in a sub-forum, which is already eight years old. So that one obviously doesn't take into account ML's more recent releases. So that's why I created a new one; Mark has now twice as many records than at this point. Because this much time has passed, I'm interested to see, how all of us see the more recent releases compared to his classics. Yes, Gargoyle is brand-new and maybe not everyone had time to digest it, but the prior two main releases, Blues Funeral and Phantom Radio are now also 5 and 3 years old - time enough to make up nearly anyone's mind Just like the old poll, everyone has three votes. Happy voting! (I hope this thread / poll is ok here - if not, please move it) (And I also hope the poll works; never made one here before)

Yeah should be interesting! Truth be told never really been 100% enamoured with BF and PR, both have been played to death and embossed onto my inner ear canal and brain(I'm getting the same initial feeling with Gargole), in no way are they shit records butifitainthappeninitainthappeninitsjustasynththing.

So far this poll seems to mirror my feelings closely. Bubblegum & Blues Funeral his peak. Field Songs & Whiskey a close second. Houston also a really superb album with some great tracks. Why was it just a publishing demo and not finished or released for so long? There is one track with an extended acoustic/rythmn guitar on the break that could of used a solo on top, but otherwise most songs seem fine to me. Just watched a video on Youtube someone did of "Blind" that's pretty cool. Looks like a Kenneth Anger short film from the early 1960's

It's impossible to choose only three albums! On each one or more songs stand out and catch my attention. On Gargoyle Old Swan, Nocturne, Sister and Emperor are my favorites so far.

Field, Bubblegum, and Whiskey were the three my friend burned me to get me into him so those were my choices.

Should be 93 votes so far and we're 10 short - someone is saving up! Surprised to see BF so high - testament to Mark gathering new fans I presume.

interesting task, this rank albums in order of favorite/ top three. 1. Weird Chill (omg people, just listen to it, it's great! better than Bubblegum, in my ranking, cuz while Bubblegum is good- very good, in fact- it's also a standard rock n roll album, in terms of sound etc. Weird Chill is a gem (an extra, an oddity). I feel like I'm listening to something I shouldn't even have access to..., a treat, a rarity) 2. Bubblegum (the high water mark, Full on rock n roll, Lanegan went electric, he also lost Jesus. the overt Jesus lyrics are gone here & foreward) 3. The Winding Sheet (the title song, people!... Woe, people!... Juarez, people!!!) 4. Whiskey for the Holy Ghost (a-hem, one whiskey for every ghost; Borracho!, Kingdoms of Rain, Carnival, Pendulum! Judas Touch! Beggar's Blues! all of 'em! Just listen to the album!) 5. Field Songs (Fix, Resurrection Song, and more...) 6. Scraps at Midnight (Hospital Roll Call, why does this song sound so good? sixteen over and over again. why? Because of This, etc) 7. Blues Funeral (agnes dei) 8. sort of doesn't feel right to rank an album of cover but, I'll Take Care of You as next on my list (On Jesus' Program, I'll Take Care of You, Boogie, Boogie, Carry Home etc) 9. doesn't seem right to rank an album that is songs from other albums and live tracks but, Has Anyone Seen my Shadow- Anthology next 10 & 11. Houston & Phantom Radio- these haven't left a strong impression on me... maybe I've lost interest, maybe I need to go back and listen more, maybe they're not that good &/or don't have as strong a distinct personality as previous albums Imitations- dreadful album of covers doesn't get ranked. Flatlands is good I don't have the EP No Bells on Sunday. Maybe I should get it I don't yet have Gargoyle. Maybe I should get around to it

Interesting results, so far... (I thought there would be many more voters - or are we so few active members here...?)
Bubblegum is my favourite album - no surprise that it´s at the top! I agree with username2500 that Weird Chill is fantastic (while not really an "album"), and together with Bubblegum is Mark´s greatest work!!
Also, The Winding Sheet and Scraps at Midnight are great albums, which have too few votes here, imo. And Whisky/Field Songs/Blues Funereal are a bit overrated... (but I love them, anyway!)

Houston & Phantom Radio- these haven't left a strong impression on me... -> Houston is fantastic. When I heard this album would be released and that it was recorded between Field and Weird, I was super excited. I listened to it many hours in a row until it was 3AM Imitations- dreadful album of covers doesn't get ranked. Flatlands is good -> I don't have the EP No Bells on Sunday. Maybe I should get it -> Bells EP is also quite nice, I really like this sort of variety between those five songs. Especially digging the first three. I don't yet have Gargoyle. Maybe I should get around to it -> Gargoyle ain't bad - it's really starting to grow on me. Took me also a while with BF and PR (to get used to this new style in general)

01. Whiskey for the Holy Ghost 02. Field Songs 03. Houston 04. The Winding Sheet 05. Scraps at Midnight 06. I'll take care of you 07. Bubblegum 08. Has God seen my shadow? 09. Here Comes That Weird Chill 10. Blues Funeral 11. No bells on Sunday 12. Phantom Radio 13. Imitations
Not rating Gargoyle as its to early for me to say although i think its safe to say it won't worry the top 8 of my list.
While we are at it lets look at the collabs as well for me the list would be:
1. Mark Lanegan & Duke Garwood - Black Puddding 2. Soulsavers - Broken 3. soulsavers - Its not how far... 4. Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan - Hawk 5. Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan - Ballad of the broken seas. 7. Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan - Sunday at devil dirt 8. The Gutter Twins - Saturnalia 9. The Gutter Twins - Adorata EP 10. Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan - Keep me in mind sweetheart EP

Jesus may not be mentioned or as overt but Blues Funeral, Phantom Radio and Gargoyle are all still jam-packed with religious references & biblical imagery.

So far looks like Whiskey, Fieldsongs & Bubblegum in a dead heat! Blues Funeral in second place by a nose. If you wheeled those four in a trifecta ticket you'd be in the money Anyone know when the poll closes?

Won't close it manually Not sure, if I can even add options - when the next album comes

Where is Dark Mark Does Christmas? It's not an official release. Come to think of it, a poll of all of ML unofficial releases could be interesting. Or maybe not!

Where is Dark Mark Does Christmas? It's not an official release. Come to think of it, a poll of all of ML unofficial releases could be interesting. Or maybe not! What do you mean with "it's not an official release"? Ok this is not sell at physical store, but it's official because Mark wanted record and publish it. Moreover it's an album studio (the only of his self-released recordings) recorded with Alain Johannes featuring 6 new covers. ...and it's one of the most touching album of his last years... Isn't it quite enough to be an official studio release?
