Is this song about anyone in particular? Seems like its about a lost friend or something.

I always heard it was about Layne Staley, and that Lanegan sang it at his funeral.

Well that explains things, cause it seems very near and emotional to Mark.

I think it's about smack... Actually that's a crap smiley for that response. But what the hell. Where did you hear the Layne Staley funeral thing?

well, i dont really approve of this kind of speculation, but obviously people have different takes on things.
anyway, here's my penny (2 cents' worth)..
i always believed it to be about Jeffrey Lee Pierce and/or Mr Cobain, given it's 1998 release.
it's a beautiful song. truly moving. very dignified. one of my favourites, and it means a lot to me. gives me chills every time.
i feel very privileged to have seen him sing it live, as i dont think it's been played publicly since the Scraps tour in 1998... and im not sure if it'll see the light of day again.
no comment on the Layne Staley thing. i know the answer, you can find it online, but privacy and respect need to be thought about. im sure if you or i had (or had not) been asked to sing/do something at an event like that, for a friend, we wouldnt want it plastered all over the internet and gossiped about.
so be respectful and mindful of that, people.
but yes, it's a fucking beautiful song about losing a friend. and that is more than enough.

He sang it in 2000 at Lola's.. oh yeah, that'd make sense. i stand corrected. i forgot about that little tour. still, 4800 miles would've been an excessively long way to go to hear it. so, without going too far out of my way, im glad i got to hear it in '98..

I guess he was speaking about the funeral thing, not the song in itself. I do not want to be mokkly spokesman there but this is exactly what I've just done

Well I just felt like it was about someone important to him, sounded that why. That's why I asked if it was about anyone in particular, didnt mean any harm ;P

It's a beautiful song. That Mark Lanegan, he's so sinister and heartless...

I've always wondered about that too, because the song does sound like an eulogy and Layne was pretty much alive when the song was recorded.

This song was written to Layne Staley. He was still alive, but was losing himself in his addiction... Goodbye my friend I hate to see you go
Anyway Mark said: It's actually about Layne Staley and was obviously written while he was alive. Kurt's death happened so suddenly, right out of the blue. It wasn't expected. But Layne had a really long, slow decline. Both of them were real close friends of mine. I lived with Layne for quite a while and I wrote that song about him after I'd gotten clean and he was still using.
