Mark Lanegan Band, December 2nd 2004 @ the Astoria because it was the best night out I've had in ages
The most unexpectedly good gig I've been to is Alterbridge on December 3rd @ the Astoria, the lead singer is a real show man, I wasn't a Creed fan but the rest of the guys are brilliant. I would definitely go to see these guys again.
The most consistently brilliant band I've seen this year in Dublin & London is an Irish band called The Answer ([ftp]www.theanswermusic.com [/ftp]), they give 110% regardless of the size of venue and/or the size of the crowd

From what I can remember:
Projekt Revolution on my birthday over the summer.
A Perfect Circle
Modest Mouse
Auf Der Maur/Monster Magnet/HIM
...I got there too late and missed Auf Der Maur, fuck! The rest of the show was great though.

My top 5: 1. The Twilight Singers, Manchester Hop & Grape, Feb 2 - Great night out. Great walk home. 2. Mark Lanegan Band, Leeds Carling Festival, August 29 - not the best of his shows, but was the first (and thankfully not the last) time I got to meet Oren and Katakuri. 3. Mark Lanegan Band, Leeds Cockpit, Nov 28 - with my greatest of apologies to Katakuri cos he couldn't make it, but this was the best of the tour that I got to see. Teenytiny venue, great sound, a crowd that actually moved, actual Lanegan banter during the encore and just a totally feelgood night out. Also the only date of the entire tour where I didn't have major stresses getting there 4. Mark Lanegan Band, Manchester University, Nov 27 - One of only 2 nights where I could actually get drunk, and made the most of it. Probably the biggest (and fullest) date of the tour, the sound was good and the company, as well as being quite the surprise as far as half it was concerned, was more than equal. 5. Mark Lanegan Band, London Astoria, Dec 2 - the other night where I could drink Looooong day (left Manchester at midday, got home just as the sun was getting up the following morn) but a good laugh, ruined only by 1. Got mithered waiting to get into the gig by "artists" doing their homework 2. Got hassled at the coach station by Mad Irish Martin the Knight of the Road, who then proceeded to follow me all the way back to Manchester 3. Didn't get to meet Mokkly. And I wanted to give him a big squishy hug Got to say howdy to Froggequene and Whitesummer (as well as meeting up with Oren again) though, so that was spangly

twilight singers/gutter twins - spaceland, los angeles, (note: listed for obvious reasons, but the el rey show was better)
pj harvey - knitting factory, los angeles
mark lanegan band, el rey, los angeles (note: not a good show as far as the mlb, but lots of fun....met flutter, lava, raeni, kylee, grandma's feeling)
x - sunset junction, los angeles (note: i will always love this band, expecially when they play in the streets of l.a. it reminds me of my first riot in early 80's at the original l.a. street scene)
twilight singers - el rey, los angeles (note: watched keanu reeves tip the bar tender ONE dollar for two beers. i tip better than that, fuckin cheap ass bastard)
turbonegro/eodm - house of cooze, los angeles (hate the venue, loved the show, rocked against ass all night long)

twilight singers - el rey, los angeles (note: watched keanu reeves tip the bar tender ONE dollar for two beers. i tip better than that, fuckin cheap ass bastard) i've never understood the tipping system – how much does a beer cost? isn't the tip suppposed to be 10% ?

sonic youth & the pixies are definitively at the top of the list, followed by APC and the yyy. the fiery furnaces were great, hot snakes splendid and the adam brown was fun. i had some good times at ml thanks for the cali crew. i'm sure i would have enjoyed seing PJH, the flaming lips and SY if people had bought tickets for lollapalooza.
the worst shows of the year are !!! not because of the band but because of the people i went with, and modest mouse because the small venue oversold 500 tckts. i left after 2 songs.

I saw so many great bands it's hard to pick. Mr. Lanegan's show at the Astoria is of course among my favourites. I've also got to recommend The Answer ladies and gents. Steer clear of their singer though ladies, he's a charmer. Of course there's the two Datsuns performances and The Donnas. The list goes on...

Didn't get to meet Mokkly. And I wanted to give him a big squishy hug ahh, maybe next time... or maybe not. best shows... twilight singers in northampton, london and leicester. all great. the only lanegan show i genuinely enjoyed was the first london one... at the carling academy, i think. cant remember. cant even think of any other shows i went to. lanegan and dulli took up a lot of my year... EDIT: actually, i went to see Jesse Malin this year and he was fantastic. i dont even own any of his records and only knew about 3 songs, but loved the whole gig. i should go and buy something by him right now. oh, and i actually quite enjoyed my only performance of the year too. lots of friends there. good time.

the only lanegan show i genuinely enjoyed was the first london one... at the carling academy, i think. cant remember. ageed, and yes it was the carling academy. the astoria show was probably the worst i saw on the whole tour - i've seen a lot of bands there and i've never known it to be so totally devoid of atmosphere.

Yeah, Rufus Wainwright was much better than I expected. I have to admit I'm a little hooked on him right now.
Shh. Don't tell anyone.
