Thank you! I don't think I saw the one with Mark discussing techno before, that's funny!

Really cool cover of The Gravedigger's Song by Yellowgroove. I like this. The singer sounds sorta like Billy Corgan. Here is the thing. My favorite singers all share this intangible that i can't really put into words. Howlin Wolf, Jim Morrison, and a few others including Mark. There aren't many who have this gift. It's like when they sing they suck up all the frequencies and their voices just sound enormous. I usually use the word "wide" to describe their voice. I have spent hours trying to explain to engineers and other musicians what i mean. It's almost as if they leave very little room in the mix for other instruments because your ears can only hear so much. I don't think you can do it on purpose either because we tried. It's a natural "presence" about his voice. I'm failing to describe it again i think. It's not a flaw, if thats what i'm making it sound like. Its the exact opposite. So, the only way i can make anyone understand is to listen to someone cover Howlin Wolf and then it's obvious. It doesn't matter if you cover it high pitched or low pitched or perfect pitch. Matter of fact, howlin wolf had some very shaky vocals and technical singers probably think he was a decent singer at best. The thing is when you hear someone else sing it, it just sounds terrible to me. It sounds like they suck the power out and it doesn't sit me back and force me to pay attention. It's almost boring. (The exception would be Morrison covering wolf.) When i hear this band covering gravediggers song then i realize how powerful Mark's voice is. They did a great job and i really like the arrangement and the context of the performance and the instruments chosen. There is a lot i like about it. I think the singer is great, but i feel that the song is missing something. If i would have never heard Mark's version then i may have fallen in love with this. I very much appreciate you sharing this video also. It just gives me another example of this thing that Mark has that is so rare and it shows why he captivates me with his voice. Sorry so long winded.

Sorry so long winded. I sort of know what you're getting at. A friend on a Zeppelin forum described Lanegan's voice as being just like Stevie Nicks'. What he meant was that there was something almost tangible about their voices that draws the listener in. I agree with him.

Okay, here's one for the class. I didn't see it in the list, although it's possible that I missed it: Telephone covers "Nearly Lost You" after spneding some quality time covering other songs from the Singles soundtrack. youtu.be/ImaZv1tMUMoStill can't figure out how I feel about the thing.

I was looking at the credits section of Mark Lanegan at Allmusic.com, maybe I could find a good cover, but I think Allmusic need to do a better job. R. Kelly covered Dollar Bill?? www.allmusic.com/song/dollar-bill-mt0010481687 Mark Lanegan is credited as composer of R. Kelly's song... ... Na-na so sick, make your toes twitch Get up in yo' ass and ride that shit Oh yeah, dare you act shady with the first lady? Let's go half on this baby Inner thighs thick so when we fuck you must put me in a Swiss ho' Room 704, fuck they mad at me fo'? Skin copper, na-na stay proper, who could stop her? Nuthin'. Hey, do a somersault All that platinum shit you bought? Nigga, fuck you thought, it ain't my fault Keep the wrist rocky, attitude cocky Next time you see me, address me like "Miss Foxy" It's for the wrist cop it, if it's a six drop it Thongs with topless how you like that Robbie? Ain't nothing sweet, you know my style, doggy style From the back, in the back, hit it like that ... Nope no sign of Screaming Trees' Dollar Bill in this trash. Someone really need to remove Lanegan's name there quick.

More Hangin' Tree goings-on - this album by Nouvelle Vague co-conspirator Olivier Libaux has just been released, with Inara George (daughter of Lowell) doing the breathy vox on this version. Skip to 2:20 if the rest of it isn't your thing.

As a heads-up, I was in Piccadilly Records in Manchester earlier today - they have a tiny amount of the Smoke Fairies "This Is A Reflection" EP where they cover Wish You Well available. Online ordering available here.
