Unpublished 1990 Italian interview:
distorsioni-it.blogspot.com/2011/08/interviste-screaming-treess-mark.htmlSorry, I can understand a bit of Italian, but I don't dare to try a translation. So Google did the job. It's not 100% bad:

Myriam Bardino: What do you think of the concert tonight and the Italian public in general?
Mark Lanegan - I think it was a typical concert Screaming Treees and that the Italian public is delicious. This is our second time in Italy. Even if only for two days is certainly not our favorite place to play where as the Italian public is excited for us and is a joy to play here. In America there are a lot of concerts, we have to travel to cover the whole month. Sometimes the audience is enthusiastic and sometimes not, with the Italian public are never wrong and your hospitality makes us very happy.
Myriam: What 'is the story of the Screaming Trees? What prompted you to play?
Mark - We grew up in a small town. We were all friends es'è semplicemente.Ci done all liked to play, we started writing songs and we are continuing to do so even after years.
Myriam: Come from a small town near Seattle, Ellensburg. In what proportion do you think has influenced you the old Seattle sound, I think of bands like the Sonics and Kingsmen or new bands like Nirvana?
Mark - Well to be honest, we just recorded a song of tribute to the Sonics on the album ("Here I is not 'the Sonics: A Tribute to the Sonics' - 1990). Everyone in Washington have grown up with the Sonics. We have thousands of discs, we are big music listeners, but we focused only on groups of our area as the Sonics or Wailers: for example, listen to many composers of the '20s and even music from different areas and eras. Even if it 'true that for that covering the area of Washington, there were significant group in the '60s but also in the 90s. For example, Nirvana is one of my favorite bands of all time along with Mudhoney.
Miriam: How do you compose the songs generally?
Mark - The guitar player (Gary Lee Conner) writes songs, makes the boxes, we work on the texts. The present group, the work a little ', and generally record fast enough.
Miriam: You've worked with SST, I can talk about your relationship with this label and also of your ties with the other groups?
Mark - We just stopped working for the SST and we are now on Sub Pop, although it probably will be our next LP on Epic: we'll start working when we get home next week. We were fine with SST, but we have entered another phase. As for the other groups of SST, there were lots of interesting groups with whom we have had the opportunity to work as Dinosaur Jr., Das Damen and fIREHOSE with which we have done two tours. The SST was a great opportunity but now we have taken another path.
Myriam: Can you talk a little 'of "Buzz Factory"? How did you work?
Mark - One of our third album "Invisible Lantern" and "Buzz Factory", we recorded a double album in Los Angeles that was never published because we did not like the sound. After touring with fIREHOSE, when we returned home, we decided to reduce it to one album. We have made a choice about the material and also added some new piece that we wrote in the meantime, we recorded very quickly, in just three days. and e 'has become one of our best sellers at the moment.
Miriam: I have a curiosity, HOW 'birth name Screaming Trees?
Mark - It 'born very stupidly. One night I drank a lot and I started shooting millions of names one after the other. The next morning I was then told that it was decided that the name of the group was Screaming Trees, but I do not remember at all. I did not like the name but the others do, so we kept.
Miriam: Do you passionate about literature?
Mark - Yes, I read hundreds of books: novels, poems. One of my favorite books is '"Journey to the End of the Night" by Celine, who has a rather pessimistic mood, and even "Tropic of Cancer" by Henry Miller. I really like poetry, especially Rimbaud.
Do not know much Italian authors.
Myriam: Returning to music, there are groups that you like right now?
Mark - My favorite band right now, and 'undoubtedly American Music Club in San Francisco, but I like the Thin White Rope, and obviously I really like Nirvana that are also friends. Among other things, I have a 'solo' album coming out on Sub Pop in April with Chris and Kurt Nirvana playing in some of the pieces.
Myriam: Projects with the Screaming Trees?
Mark - Well as I said before, probably will record this album with Epic. We will of rehearsing, recording and then leave on tour, maybe back here next year, next spring, but first I hope will be a period that is' non-stop.
The Screaming Trees were then continued to mark indelibly the 90s with works like "Uncle Anesthesia" (1991, Epic), "Sweet Oblivion (1992, Epic)," Dust "(1997, Epic).
On a visual level it is recommended the DVD of 1996 "SCREAMING TREES feat. JOSH HOMME - Live At Rockpalast"
