I'm planning on going to Seattle in April, very exciting, my grunge-friend from High School and I are finally going on our dream grunge vacation. Of course, we're now in our late 20s and well aware that most of the grunge landmarks are gone. I guess the Sound Garden is still there, though. The keystone of the trip, though, is the opening of the new NIRVANA exhibit at the EMP (which is now also a comic book museum or something?) So I was just curious if anyone had any suggestions of what else we should do, and where we should eat! I always like seeing local art. And I'm very excited about seeing the Pacific Ocean (I've never been to the west coast before. My friend I'm going with is actually just bopping up there from California where she lives now, I'm going all the way from New England.)

I'll think on that for a bit for ya. I moved up here in '94 and one of the first things a new friend did was take me on drives to show me the "sights" - what remained of them, anyway. I haven't been to A Sound Garden in over ten years, glad I decided to check the website - we used to be able to stroll right up to it from Magnuson Park, but not anymore. www.cityofseattle.net/parks/magnuson/art.htm will tell you all of the security rules that are now in effect (if you haven't already checked that yourself). I've never actually heard the sculpture, mind you, although I've been to see it several times. I guess it has to be fairly windy and quiet. I quite like visiting the Troll, so I recommend that. He lives under the Fremont Bridge which is part of Aurora Ave. Ummm, yep, you are correct most of the old landmarks are long gone, so there's not much to recommend there. The cool murals are gone, most of the clubs and hangouts are gone, some other spots are still around but completely remodeled, the Seattle Center fountain is of course still there but only fun on warm days (you can run and play in it), and the Space Needle still hasn't taken off but it costs $18 to go to the top. What kinds of food do you like? Almost every neighborhood seems to have an Art Walk, the biggest is in Pioneer Square on the first Thursday of every month. www.seattle.gov/council/licata/artwalks/artwalks.htm has a pretty good list of them and links (they don't all specify whether they happen on Second Tuesdays or Third Thursdays, just the dates of the next, but if it's on a second Friday in March it'll be second Friday in April). I know Grangerlang lives in the area, too, so hopefully she'll have some useful info for you.

i'm going to the Nirvana exhibit after the Lanegan show in June. Def. try to catch a concert. Showbox, El Corazon. Crocodile Cafe. I've been to Seattle a handful of times, and was bummed about Soundgarden. You can get to the top of the space needle for free if you eat at the restaurant. The Seattle Art Museum has a great art piece in their lobby, and cool exhibits. They had something on Kurt Cobain last summer.. The Hard Rock near pike Place is a cheesy must. I loved seeing all of the memorabilia. Courtney+Kurt's wedding cake topper is there, along with a signed drum head by ours truly, Mark Lanegan. Barbie Dream hearse www.barbiedreamhearse.com/?page_id=148We should all roll up to the Lanegan show in that^ Theres an 826 Seattle www.greenwoodspacetravelsupply.com/ which I still have to check out.

Portland has that awesome pinball arcade down the block from the roseland! And voodoo donuts! Portland's beauty bar beats the pants off of S.F's! There's an awesome movie theater with couches and good food/drinks by the Ace hotel! And lets not forget Powell's books! Hawthorne st. is pretty fun too.
I used to not like Portland, but now I cant wait to be back.

Hey Katey, You can always get tickets through scalpers or 3rd party ticket sites..sometimes for even less than face value...so I wouldn't worry about that part of it.
Well, My plan is to go to each leg of the tour. Never been been out West. I'm looking forward to LA and Portland the most though...There's something about Portland that intrigues me. Should be rad.
My initial plan is to fly in to LA from Philly, get a Rental carfor a week or so, and hop from city to city, (Not sure about Lodging yet). Then fly out from Seattle to NYC..where I'll be catching a DEERVANA show. (Deer Tick playing as Nirvana)
OMG, this is going to be an awesome trip.

Seattle's nicer in June, anyway - it's when we usually get our week-long "heatwave" and the temperatures actually get above 80. Of course, this year's been a bit strange everywhere.... I hope you make it over here, CJ - I love this city, have from the first moment I got here.

There's something about Portland that intrigues me. I know! I don't quite understand it, I felt drawn there after I saw the tour date posted.

Hmmm, I'm off to Portland in less than 2 weeks to visit a friend. It'll be my first time there and I can't wait to check it out.
I visited the Sound Garden in 2005. We had to leave our identity at the gate, even our cell phones. That was strange enough, but the entire place creeped me out. There were dead fish and birds along the path, the place had a distinct smell that I can't begin to describe, and the sounds emitting from that sculpture were the eeriest of all. I could only stay so long because I felt a really bad vibe. That said, I'm still glad I went and I can understand the inspiration.
