Only on my second listen and I was so tired last night (not even really sure why I was so very tired) I don't know how much the first listen counts. So interesting listening to the evolution from "When It's In You" to the "Methamphetamine Blues" we know. These "demos" stand up pretty well as a "finished" album, too. So glad this was released, it's still sonically much more in the vein of what Mark was doing pre-Weird Chill/Bubblegum (and I know a lot of fans wish that had continued), but still serves as another of the steps from the one sound to the other. The release of these kinda feels like paying tribute to those days and that phase, in a way, maybe, if that makes sense?

The album also seems to highlight how much of an abrupt change Here Comes That Weird Chill and Bubblegum were. It will definitely be interesting to hear what Mark does next as far as albums go, especially considering there were also a few tracks on Phantom Radio that had that older style of songwriting on it...

My tracking number says I'll get it tomorrow so I hope that's true. I'm so use to Amazon Prime and getting things on their release date that this is torture, especially after I saw it at Newbury Comics last night while picking up the new Chelsea Wolfe album.

The release of these kinda feels like paying tribute to those days and that phase, in a way, maybe, if that makes sense? I found that it's a lot like the Screaming Trees' Last Words, in that had been released at the time it would have felt a bit disappointing, a bit too much like the previous record in a lot of places (something that Mark has never done with anything). It fits better now with the benefit of hindsight where we can hear all these little snippets in more than a few songs that ultimately moved on elsewhere, as well as one or two experiments that ended up as interesting but fitting dead ends.

Years ago I got a long-sleeved Lanegan t-shirt that said "Dead slow rock and roll" on it. Now at least I know where the phrase came from! Well on this record it says "Rock and roll, dead slow", but still.

It's funny but after we got that first listen of No Cross that line hit me in the heart and I posted it on Facebook with no reference to ML - I just loved it and NOW I want that tshirt:) would even love to see a pic of it:)

Gotta admit I'm finally getting impatient for the vinyl...Chelsea Wolfe's Abyss is an incredible record (album of the year IMO) but after 12 or so all the way through sessions, I need something a little less dark and heavy for counterbalance. You know, lighthearted, easy listening fare such as the type typically served up by one Mr. Lanegan :-) :-) :-)

Got as far as the word Gravel in the first sentence, stopped reading. Unfortunately, it's rare to come across a review where that word isn't mentioned... I'm fairly sure that there's some mileage to be gained from marketing a Mark Lanegan Review Bingo/Drinking Game, where various stock words and phrases - gravel-voiced, whiskey-soaked, chain-smoking etc - in various combinations (I may well try to sneak in "gravel-soaked" myself next time to see if anyone notices) earns points and libations to the lucky reader, with bonus points/drinkies awarded whenever the press release is merely copied and pasted for the sake of filling a bit of space in part or entirety instead of offering some sort of insight or opinion to make the generation of ad revenue worthwhile for all parties. This last bit is made even more obvious with Houston due to the curious bit about the Screaming Trees having "just" broken up a whole two years previous (and another 12 months extra since they recorded anything at all), among various other snippets

Lovely review, silence! I'm so pleasantly surprised by this album. I figured it would have some interesting stuff, but was assuming it would lean more towards Field Songs than Bubblegum. Instead it's a weird little gem that somehow manages to fit anywhere and everywhere in Lanegan's discography. I think it's especially great coming on the heels of the stuff he's been putting out lately. For a guy with such distinctive sound, he really goes all over the songwriting map, doesn't he? (I will say, though, hearing that early version of Methamphetamine Blues nearly broke my brain!)

This album is great vintage Mark. I'm so glad he released it. The early 2000s era Mark is my favorite stuff, maybe because that is when I started listening.
Has anyone been able to figure out if this has all of the Cook County songs? There were snippets on YouTube of all of them.
I recall that dead slow rock n roll shirt, that was my reaction too. It just had his name and said "dead slow rock n roll" underneath. I also remember one from that time saying "see that my grave is kept clean" which I thought was weird until I later found out it was from a Leadbelly song.

I love the way that Way to Tomorrow ends, it's the perfect ending to the album.
It's a shame that none of these songs will probably get played live.
